Official: GPS fix is being pushed out

Im not sure that this is true or not, but i think the issue here might be that iPhone is ATT best seller. Of course, any buisness in the world is going to push their best welling product.

Again i dont know if they are pushing the tourch over the Capt. but it could be because they are more familliar with the iPhone/ BB products more than Android. Up until recently, Android was really unknow territoty to ATT, still is. I think they are more comfortable selling/pushing/showing off products they know more about. I think a used car salesman would be more likely to try to push you a Civic over say a Fiat?

I am not really trying to stand up for ATT sales, because i think, in a majoritive scence, they are really uneducated about their products. I am mearly trying to introduce a different possibility to the pesimists besides, "All the other companies are assuring their customers their SGS phone will be patched except ATT. So this must mean the for whatever reason the Capt. is the only SGS phone that cant and wont be fixed by Samsung, so it sux".

I dont think this is the case.

Well I think in general, att decided not to hop on the android bandwagon for one reason or another. I don't quite understand that since android has got the largest market share increase within the last year.

Is it because they dont want to step on apples toes. I would think they would want to get on the android bandwagon since if all reports are true( wont believe till i see it ) , that they are losing exclusivity on iphone at end of the year.

Every other major service provider in the US has two strong android smartphones to offer. We will see what becomes of all this. As you can tell i am kind of hesitant of att and samsung to come thru with support on this phone

Well, I have read at least a dozen different articles from engadget, gizmodo, laptop magazine, Cnet, and many others that Samsung is currently promising two things for this phone;

1. The firmware update to "optimize GPS performance".
2. They will be releasing Froyo sometime in late september or early Oct.

Even if that is ALL they do for this phone. It will be a badass phone. And the best Android phone ATT has to offer.

Even IF for whatever reason, Samsung says F* the Captivate, we dont want to support it. I think given time hackers will come up with a good reliable solution to make this thing have working GPS and prolly get froyo working on it. In just a few weeks, people have already been coming up with all kinds of things to improve performance and possible even tweek the GPS.

If anyone is really THAT concerned that after all the time, money, advertising, development, etc of the captivate alone, go back on their word and decide to "ditch" it. It my be in their best interest to just stop bitching about it and get an iPhone, x10, streak, or Aria or transfer to another carrier and get a different Android phone they feel more comfortable with.

They came right out and said they are going to fix it... why wouldn't they?

Got my Captivate about three days ago. What is the problem with the GPS? My new Captivate, running 2.1, shows me within 10' of where I'm actually standing. I've checked it several times and it is always this accurate.

Well, it seems to be a sporatic issue. Some people say theirs doesnt work at all. Some say there's works sometimes. Others says theirs works when standing still but they move and it looses lock, some say when stationary its fine, but when they move it gets weird and jumps alover the place. My first Capt. didnt lock at all, ever. I bought it back beacuase of a completely different issue. My second one has worked flawlessly for the last week i have had it, in every situation I have used it for with fairly good accuracy.

If you really want to hear the whole story, dig around this forum for a few minuts. There is a million different post about peoples issues with it.

The bottom line remains: Samsung said they would fix it, soon. So why are people still worrying and complaining about it?

I think you mean 10 meters. That's over 32.8 feet. Most other phones with GPS are much more accurate. 10 meters is much too inaccurate to use with some apps like those for golf.

I think you mean 10 furlongs. That's over 200 meters. .......

Why would you claim to know what that poster meant? Just curious :) I mean ' is pretty far from M on the keyboard.

Because the blue arrow only shows meters and not feet. That's why I said I *think* he/she meant 10 meters. Nowhere did I claim to know what the poster meant and obviously the poster can clarify.

Hello, I'm new to this forum and also my captivate android phone. The only time the GPS worked flawlessly for me was when I was in a 3g area on a recent trip. GPS worked great until I got back to my Edge network in northern Michigan. We are getting 3g up here in a couple of months. Is it possible that 3g could have anything to do with GPS reception?
In addition, I also called At&t, sent me straight to Samsung. Called Samsung and the woman told me the fix was coming in September and that I would notified via At&t. She didn't have an exact date.

Thanks for the info on the coming fix, always good to keep hearing confirmation on this.

My guess with the 3g affecting your location results is that you likely have "use wireless networks" activated in your location/privacy settings. It what that does is uses wifi networks as well as cell tower triangulation to "assist" the GPS in finding you. However, in most cases with the captivate (many of them anyway) the actual GPS is not functioning propperly or at all, so it is relying more or completely on the wireless networks to help locate you. The wireless network assistance isnt very accurate and wont work at all for navigation or tacking your path (like with the "my Tracks" app).

My GPS still seems to be working pretty well, but once Samsung gets this problem fixed, A LOT of people are going to be very happy.

I have use wireless uncked and my roadtrip from Detroit to Iowa I ran into a few edge spots. I had no issues.

The title of this thread is so annoying!

Mods, if you can censor me, can't you change this thread title? ;):o

FWIW, I had to go to an AT&T store to get them to give confirmation to Amazon Wireless that my Wifi and GPS are subpar. While I was there ( the third "AT&T Store" I had to visit to find one that wasn't JoeBob reseller), I asked the very well proportioned CSR is she knew anything about when the fix will actually be pushed out.

She looked up in her terminal at (what I presume to be) notices for techs and upcoming technical events on the network. She said that as of Thursday, 1500 MDT, there was nothing in the queue to indicate that the "push" was imminent.

I may return my Captivate just to get a phone with a physical camera button and to get the power button and overly sensitive volume keys off the side of the phone. Every time I resume from sleep, I change the ringer volume. but, i digress.....:rolleyes:

So...you'll be moving away from AT&T I presume. Nothing else worth having...if you want anything of any size. Aria is nice, but too small.

I'm so anxious for the GPS fix....but it'll be end of month I suspect, if then.

I do have to admit that this is a pretty big pain in my ass. So much of this OS is integrated with the GPS. I know it's supposed to be fixed soon, but that doesn't make the uncertainty any easier to swallow. I have 10 days left on my return policy and that's really pushing it. I don't want to go back to the iPhone, but it's safe and there isn't another viable Android option on ATT except for the Nexus One, and it's unsubsidized. I guess I just need to cross my fingers and hope that the AMAZING Android community and Samsung will come through.

I've been using JH3 firmware on my phone for a little over a week and the GPS works perfectly fine. I get a lock within 5 seconds inside my car and never lose the lock. I even get a lock inside my house if I am near a large window.

For people who are not brave enough to flash an experimental firmware (JH4) now, just wait until the official OTA update. THE GPS WILL BE FIXED!

What are the major downsides of running jh3/jh4 firmwares ? you still can run sre and the lag fix ?

The only issue is that JH3 appear to be a debugging version and GPS logging is turned on by default. It will slowly fill up the memory unless you mod jupiter.xml file and disable GPS log.

Other than that, it runs great. No major problems encountered as of yet. I believe you can run lag fix on it.

I feel your pain. I have taken mine back and am suffering with my old Tilt, waiting for the fix. I didn't want to chance that it won't be fixed. I too cannot imagine they won't fix it. But don't want to take the chance. As soon as I see that it fixed, it will be in my hands again.

Despite stories like yours, I have zero faith in any thing out there now. (Except JH4? I don't think I've heard of that. Is it new?).

I applied JH3. Coincidentally I was to take a 100 mile drive the next day. Worked what appeared to be perfect on the way to Kansas City. As I neared my very last turn, it said to turn left on whatever street, I did, and it immediately had no idea where I was.

Then driving back to the freeway, it had me driving on a cul-de-sac that ws off to my right (not interescting the street I was on). Driving home on the freeway I was in the fields.

So my expectations are that for you, you just have not experienced the right circumstances for it to go haywire. But I wish you luck.

Unless I have more patience than I think I can muster, if the fix is not here by end of September, I'll probably move to Verizon.
