@Inevitability I already wanted to ask you to "walk through" the installation of a good ROM, but finally, finally OTA of 404 hit my phone in Lithuanian and you reported issues with the custom ROM. So I installed the update (after some hesitation - the previous update left a mark on my mind). Everything went smoothly this time and I can report initial observations of some improvements in performance. I have not yet noted a substantial improvement in battery time (today it lasted only some 6 hrs again, but that after system install etc. so I am hoping to see better result further on), but I see notable changes in its usage report: now the biggest battery-eater is screen (over 52%), and not Android OS as it used to be (now only some 10%). The auto-brightness issue also seems to be gone. Overall, the phone seems to be marginally snappier. Thus so far so good - I am happy with the update, but waiting was way, way too long...
I just received my 4.04 OTA (in China using a Hong Kong sourced 9023) and can confirm battery life is better on 4.04 vs 4.03. As with PvtJoker's findings, Android OS is using less juice at 14% vs 30% with 4.03. I don't use the live wallpaper so screen usage is similar at about 30%.
With regards battery time so far today I'm at 25% after 14hours 39s. Yesterday on 4.03 I was at less than 10% for the same time. Biggest improvement for battery time when first grappling with ICS 4.03 was setting 'keep Wi-Fi on during sleep' to 'Never' in the Advanced WiFi settings.
My CPU usage is still always up at 99% and flat chat at 1GHz so no change from 4.03. It was always pretty high on 2.3.6 as well but given the fact that I'm the only person I know running ICS overall I'm happy.
btw thanks to all who have posted and helped so far - this is a very useful thread.

Awesome! Glad for you, I tried updating from SD card (manual flash) of 4.0.4, then I tried wiping everything before manual install of 4.0.4 (second attempt to 4.0.4) and then I stayed on 4.0.3 for a few days. I got OTA 2 days ago and decided to update last night. Now it seems normal - not sure yet still testing
@tobyyoda: Thanks for a useful observation regarding advanced WiFi setting. However, for me it is one of the key functions of a smartphone to have email syncing over internet constantly on (even in sleep mode).
My further observations for the full "usual" day on ICS 4.0.4: I noticed that the "Exchange Services" grabbed a large share of battery use (around 25%) as I had wifi or 3G turned on for most of the day and it was mostly used for syncing several email accounts. It's a bit on the high side IMHO, given no intensive use of the internet, just email syncing without attachments and a few widgets e.g. Bloomberg etc. updating. Android OS battery use stabilized around 20%. Screen (and I do not use live wallpaper) used around 30% of the battery leading me to suspicion that auto-brightness still does not work perfectly (although visually it looks notably better than on 4.0.3). Overall my phone lasted a bit more than 12 hours on the full charge (with wifi/3G on for most of the day) vs 6-9 hours on a comparable day with 4.0.3. Thus I conclude that the improvement is notable, but there are still places to work on.

PvtJoker, yes I certainly agree - notable but still places to work on. In my case all my email syncs over EDGE (not even 3G here) so I can get away with the WiFi compromise. I'll keep WiFi switched on tomorrow and see how the performance compares. Tonight I'm at 17% for 15h 44min. Under 4.03 I was lucky to 10hours before seeing the red bar at the bottom of the battery indicator.

If it helps for comparison, I kept WiFi, Cell data & Sync on today and I got to 10hours 20mins before the warning to connect my charger appeared.
My battery stats are:-
screen 35%
facebook 8% (even though I didn't actually use it once...honest)
Android system 8%
Voice Calls 7%
WiFi 7%
Mobile Standby 7%
Maps 6%
Android OS 5%
Media Server 3%
GT Tasks 3%
This is still better than with 403 but I think this shows the WiFi settings are probably the biggest battery save for me rather then 404 vs 403, although my Android OS seems to be behaving a bit better than yours?! To be honest I am no expert so would be hesitant to recommend anything to other members but potentially these stats might be useful to some??!!

This is your problem - there is a bug in Exchange Services that causes a loop and the CPU is working harder, hence the Android OS usage is high too. See here about this issue and please contribute info to help fix it:I am at 17% left with only barely 8 hrs of use.

Thanks I will try to contribute to the thread that you forwarded although I am not good at the technical stuff at all - I just can clearly notice that I experience that issue.
Just to follow up on the battery issue with 4.0.3. Unbelievable - I am just barely 7 hours since the last full charge today and 2% of battery remaining. Exchange Services have eaten 33% today. Pretty much the same was yesterday, both days quite mane emails from my several accounts were synced, but only a few were read on phone. I have seconded the issue in the dev forum as suggested by bfksc, and a few more users have confirmed the same issue with Exchange Services severely draining the battery. Re-installing the Exchange Services seems to help a day or two (the good effect I experienced right after ICS upgrade from 03 to 04), but then it falls back to the battery draining again...

The update came to my nexus i clicked install it is the ICS 4.04 in restarted in 10 seconds and then a black screen with a grey Google logo appears in the middle and the "unlocked" logo on the bottom of the screen. And it stays that way for hours .... Last time i let it for 6 hours and nothing. Had to remove the battery so i could use my phone. 
this is my 3rd attempt. i tried manual install with walkthroughs from youtube and same thing happened . ... help ?

I was using mobo player to view .avi files when i had android 2.3.6. But after I updated it to android 4.0.4, i cant play .avi files. Is anyone else facing the same problem? please provide a solution.

The unlocked icon at the bottom indicates that you have unlocked the bootloader and/or rooted the device. You need to re-lock the bootloader using "fastbook oem lock" for the official update to install.

The bootloader doesn't need to be locked to flash official updates. My bootloader has been unlocked for the past year, and I was able to manually flash the 4.0.3 update as well as get the 4.0.4 update OTA.
