Official Lapdock 100 & 500 Discussion thread

A co-worker educated me on the simultaneous use of talk/text and the browser. That function works when you are in the 4G/LTE network coverage area. If you are in a 3G network coverage area, the Bionic will dump the browser when a call comes in. That would be a dealbreaker for me since I still spend a lot of time outside the 4G/LTE coverage area.

But is that just with regular cell use or lapdock use or both?

I knew about 4G being able to work simultaneously with call (because I'm pretty sure it's the same for Sprint on Wimax), but I wonder if that changes when using either of the lapdocks?

From the early discussions, after the EVO was released, this was one of the big things...that you could browse using 4G while talking on the phone (simultaneously), due to 4G (Wimax) being connected through different means than 3G connectivity. That's the layman explanation because I didn't really understand when all the uber-tech discussions were going on (so someone explained to me).

I lose connectivity in 3G mode while placing a call w/the LAPDOCK.You can still view the current page, but,if you attempt to websurf while on a call,a FIREFOX error page is all you get.

Definitely a major bummer for those in 3G only markets.

Go to the Verizon site, click on the DROID 4> accessories > LAPDOCK 500. It will be listed for $249.
Place item in cart, proceed to checkout & the price drops to $149.

Edit :Credit due to SOMNIFERUM in the BIONIC FORUM for posting this find, see DROID LIFE for reference.

^ great and I'm broke at the moment. lol

oh and I came across this article this evening. All I can say is OUCH OUCH and Double OUCH.

Lapdock: From avant-garde to awful

:(

I don't know what to think. The guy's other reviews are all glowing about Apple products and gave a similar review to the Photon. Then again, he was reviewing the 500, so not really a fair comparison for me. Plus, I love the 100 for my needs.

The firesale lasted all of 24 hours(maybe less),but, it's still available on backorder from VZW for $249,$100 less than MOTOROLA & AMAZON.

If I had waited 5 more days on my in-store purchase of the LAPDOCK 500, I could have returned it for a full refund (less restocking fee) & purchased TWO of them for the same amount of money. :(

Agreed... certainly sounds like Droid/MOTO hating to me when others using the product have much different opinions. What bothers me is the comparison to a laptop. This was never billed as a laptop or netbook and created it's own category of device which is an EXTENSION of your smart phone/mini-mobile computer.

That's what's so strange to me. Same reviewer gave such a great review for the Photon, so I'm not even sure it's necessarily hating on Moto. Only reason I could think the Photon got such a good review is because it wasn't expected to be "great."

It really doesn't make a difference for my opinion of lapdocks because IMO, it's the perfect option for travelling and great alternative to tethering. Some people like having separate devices, but I'm more for convenience (as well as options...which is why I've never been a fan of Apple's proprietary mindset). Only thing that would be better, for me, would be to have an all-in-one device (phone w/ tablet/lapdock accessory). Even though tablets can be connected to w/ bluetooth devices, I just find that an all-in-one accessory would be so much more convenient.

I realize that this is for the Photon phone, but there really is no good info coming from the RAZR regarding the 500. I just received mine yesterday and have not had alot of time to play with it.

A couple of things that I did experience though is in the hour or two, I had a couple of reboots. Also, I have time warner cable and they have an app that works on my home laptop using firefox (to actually watch tv), but it wanted to install (silverlight? I think), which I couldn't.

Would love to hear some more usages / apps that you are able to use on the 500.

Thxs in advance.

No worries. We're all in the Moto family anyway. I don't think you can install regular computer software (like Silverlight), but I could be wrong.

I just got my $149 500 lapdock delivered and can't get it to do anything with my Photon. The webtop won't stay on the screen for more than a few seconds (keeps alternating between a webtop screen and the flashing red moto logo). Is there a certain system update level the Photon needs to be on? I changed the Photon Sys version to 99.9.9 to prevent auto updates breaking the dockless webtop.

I don't think you have to worry about auto updates breaking the webtop.I'd start w/restoring the phone back to stock. Then, try these steps when starting up the LAPDOCK 500:

1) Ensure the lid on the LAPDOCK is closed

2) With the PHOTON on its lockscreen, plug it into the LAPDOCK.

3) Press the power button on the PHOTON to turn the screen off, but, leave the phone on & place in the phone cradle.

4) Open the lid & the LAPDOCK 500 should power on within 30 seconds or less.

When exiting the LAPDOCK 500,close all windows on the webtop, minimize, & do the same w/the phone.

I know these steps aren't written in any user manual(there aren't any meaningful manuals to be found, just a few basic video how-to's on MOTOROLA'S website & YOU-TUBE).
However, through trial & error,I've found these steps work in getting past the screen saver mode of the ever-floating MOTOROLA symbol.

I followed all your recs, including restoring to stock. Now I have the webtop on the dock, but the trackpad doesn't work. I can see the cursor on the screen, but I can't move it. I can plug a USB mouse in and the cursor works fine. Anyone else run into this?

The trackpad is awful at best.I'm waiting for the update to enable the disabling of the trackpad.

Mine takes a LOT of force/pressure to work it.

Take a visit tohttp://www.forums.motorola.com for more insight on the LAPDOCK 500.

You may have a bad unit, but,I'd try out the MOTO forums first for guidance,as there are good people there(from MOTO & the general public),just like in our forums here.

Thanks, I posted over there. It's probably a bad unit, which will suck since Verizon doesn't have any more to exchange it with.

The motorola guys had the fix in case someone else runs into this

  1. Disconnect the phone from the Lapdock
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the Lapdock
  3. Close the lid and flip the Lapdock over from left-to-right -- the labels on the bottom should be at the top
  4. On the middle row (left-to-right) of the rubber *** covers, there is a single small hole about 2 inches in from the left side (do not confuse this single hole with the speaker holes, which are at the bottom)
  5. Using the end of a paperclip, gently press the button once
This will reset the Lapdock to its initial state. The Lapdock 100 has a similar reset button. The Bionic and Atrix Lapdocks do not have reset buttons.

I have a Sprint Photon and recently purchased the Lapdock 500. I've heard others complain of it not working at all on the Photon and my issue was the actual cable. When I plug in the cable to the phone and have it sit in the cradle of the Lapdock 500, I noticed the micro usb power port come off the phone ever so slightly, due to the cable flexes upwards when the phone is on the cradle. This seems to put the phone in a charge on/off and cause it to not load webtop to the lapdock. If I take the phone off the cradle and say put in on the side, and make sure the cable is plugged in, webtop loads properly. Not sure if anyone else has this same issue, with the Photon or any other device, but it seems Moto should have made the cable fit better so it doesn't move when plugged into the phone.

I took delivery of mine for the RAZR, last Tuesday and have to agree with the cable. I am also seeing reboots, although I am still learning how to use the lapdock.

Anyone else finding the webtop too laggy for writing documents? Is there some better way than using googledocs? I am disappointed if there isn't... Sorry if it was already posted in the thread, just learning to use Tapatalk so I'm not sure how well the search works..

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, Its been over a week (RAZR 500), and I am not finding any usefulness.

Yes, its nice to have some of the android functionality in a larger screen, but what computerization does the lapdock do besides internet?

One project that I was hoping to do, is file and picture management. I have copied all of my photos onto a usb flash drive and am able to see them, but only one by one, not in a slideshow mode.

Regarding other files, I would like to be able to cut and paste, but it appears to download a file such as excel, instead of resaving on the flash drive.

Thoughts? and in advance thank you for any advice.

Is there a way to factory reset the 500Pro?

Where does it keep it's data such as custom icons and cookies? I manuall cleared all caches, cookies and histories and every time I plug my phone back up it has my Facebook name and password. Is this coming from the phone or device?
