Official - My Droid Razr is here!!! thread

No sir. It went to 3G a couple times but I never lost data.

It is only Day 1 though. Did the Bionic suffer this problem out of the gate?

I think, but don't know for sure... I didn't get the Bionic until about a month into its life-cycle, but people were complaining about it then. It's a weird issue... 2 days will be perfect, then all of a sudden the "data" hits the fan. No consistent clues pointing to anything as the cause - it's really odd.

p3 tweeted the other day that his Bionic lost data while the Razr and G-Nex sitting next to it were fine. Others have reported their TBolt or Charge kept data while the Bionic lost it - so hopefully it's Bionic only. But they're so close, and both Moto, and so similar in a lot of ways, I can't help but unfairly think the Razr could have the same problem.

of course it is brother. he even mentions no overheating lol....man up and quit being a sissy about warmth lol

I know a good phone when I handle it and vice versa :)

We shall see brother...

As for the heat, i'm guessing so many comaints were in fact because of the phone being plugged into the chargers for ever...Which is what a few people pointed out! Either way, i'm goin in!

Heat on the back of a phone never bothers me because I usually throw a shiny silicone case on all my phones and I can't feel it.

However if heat is present on a screen, that would drive me nuts...

Hopefully is was the never ending charging cycle on the demos that caused this.

Yes...Bionic does it all day long.

I have yet to come across a single person that doesn't have the problem at some point... they'll typically say "mine's been perfect", then a day later, "ok I was wrong, just happened this morning", or something along those lines...

Come on man....There is no perfect device! Personally, I get that your liking it bro, and that's a good thing!

However, your telling me (us, all of us) that there isn't a single downside to this phone.

No heating issues?
No screen issues with brightness, etc?
No issues with call volume?
No issues with the loose power button?
No issues with the camera focusing?

So none of the above?

I really really like mine, but here's a bit more critical review for you.

1. Heating. It's gets warm, no where near as hot as my OG Droid OC'd to 1.2Ghz. It's comfortable so far. Strangely enough, I think the phone gets warmer from being in my back pocket. My one issue is I'm wondering how hot it really gets inside, since there are basically two temperature insulating materials on the front and back.

2. Screen is definitely more dim compared to my OG Droid and iPhone 4s. I'll learn more as I walk back and forth during the day between buildings at work. This is my first Pentile matrix display and I see what everyone is talking about. It was immediately noticeable to me. I think the fuzziness/screen door effect looks crappy, but as long as I don't look for it I don't notice it. For example, a typical posture I see with people using smartphones is sitting with hands in lap, looking down at phone. From that distance I don't notice it. Up close <=1 ft and it's hard to ignore the Pentile matrix. As a reference, I can still see the pixels on the iPhone 4s, but just barely (maybe I have super eyes!). Colors look nice and vivid though. Blacks look fantastic. Is the screen a deal breaker? Not for me... I'm sure I'll get used to it. My gf likes it.

3. Call volume is plenty loud and clear. Call quality seems better than OG Droid. I always had this high whiny pitch in the earpiece.

4. I don't see an issue with the power button. Although it does seem out of place having more play than other components.

5. I haven't played with it much, but I had trouble focusing the camera if I zoomed in because my hand wasn't steady enough. Otherwise, the touch to focus works well enough. So far it's taken maybe 2 seconds max to focus, but otherwise 1 sec or so. Shutter speed is fast, practically instant. Exposure isn't that great though. Seems to struggle handling variable light intensities in the same frame, but not many phones do it well. My iPhone 4s seems to handle it best by adjusting exposure to what you tapped to focus. Razr doesn't do that, it'll focus but not adjust the exposure.

6. Bluetooth. Static or muted speech from me in my car, basically unusable if I want to talk, but ok if I just listen to whomever if I'm on the line with. Works fine with Plantronics headset. To be fair, my iPhone 4s has even worse bluetooth functionality. It has the same static/muting on my speech, but also cuts out on stereo bluetooth. OG Droid had that issue to. My old blackberry tour bluetooth worked flawlessly.

7. 4G sucks the life out of battery. I had it sitting on my desk for about 2 hrs just idling, strong 4G signal, no switching. Battery dropped 20%. However, I switched to 3G only under wireless settings and battery seems fine. 6 hrs later, after some youtube, gmail video chat test, a little madden nfl test, some browsing, and I'm at 60% life remaining after 8 hrs total (2 on 4G/6 on 3G)

8. Google video chat works flawless over 3G! :D Tested it out briefly.

9. Build. The phone is definitely solid. However, as I suspected, the kevlar is maybe just a gimmick. It's very pliable *cough* *cough* as I suspected after having learned more about kevlar following a certain "discussion". I can push gently in certain spots and both see and feel it deform. If you press firmly enough you can feel the edges of the internal structure, whatever they may be. I'm confident now it's use is as a high end/luxury version of that soft feel backing on many metal phones. The benefit, however, is that it will also offer scratch resistance with the ergonomics (grip). The soft feel on my OG droid is scratched the hell up, still feels nice though, but looks ugly.

10. While super snappy and fast, I have seen it "stutter" for lack of a better word. I don't want to say stutter because it's really negligible and rarely happens. I've seen the same on my iPhone 4s. It's definitely no worse or better.

11. Keyboard. Although I disabled haptic feedback, it's still there with the default keyboard. It seems to slow the responsiveness down since it's trying to provide feedback before letting you hit the next letter, despite being a multitouch keyboard. I may have to switch it to swype if I don't get used to it or get annoyed by it.

12. This is going to be a pick pocketers dream phone. Being tall, it barely sticks out the top of my back pocket. Since it's so thin it's easily slid in, and especially out. Be watchful of your phones people!

Summary: I'm happy with the phone, no regrets. The worst negative is the screen for me, but it's by no means a deal breaker. I'm sure I would notice it on the Gnex as well, despite the higher resolution. I'm probably more excited I can use Google video chat over 3G since Facetime is completely useless.

Some thoughts:

1. Screen does heat up when the phone is used intensively with data. Nothing major, though.
2. Speed is amazing and the stock Motorola launcher is great too. I tried both LPP and ADW EX and they were not as nice as stock and I never used stock before because either LPP or ADW EX would work better, not here.
3. Hard to say about coverage, it is good in general, but I did notice jumping between bands at some point.
4. The phone IS big. Will need time to get used to it.
5. Keyboards are great.
6. 3G speeds are really good. I was browsing the net and compared browser performance to my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Razr was faster.
7. The overblown colors are not something that you see immediately. I did not see it until I started playing bubble popper.

Overall I am happy so far. Finally I got it rooted this morning so now I can start customizing it as I normally would.

Got mine yesterday

My succession of phones: BB World, BB Storm, OG Droid, Droid X.

I love this phone. Spent way too much time fretting over all the details and concerns in the forums. Sure, there will be a better phone to come out, there always will be. Can I live with this one for a long while? Yes.

Set up was simple, plugged in my gmail address then went to the app store and started loading. I have backed up but decided to just start fresh. I did load a 32gb card the day before with music, movies, docs and pics from my old phone.

No issues with the screen, it looks great, not going to nit pick it. It does get warm, more so than any other phone I've had but I would rather have it dissipate out than stay internal. I couldn't hit the download key fast enough while getting apps, as soon as I did, it was done. No speed issues here. The size is fine. It's actually the same size as my X with a thin cover but half as thick. Battery usage is up in the air, to be fair I haven't had the phone off much. After I settle back into a regular routine with I will get a better feel for it. I don't particularly care though, I have chargers at home, work and in the car so never too far from juice.

This is my non technical impressions after several hours of use. I am very satisfied with this phone. I typically spend way too much time agonizing over specs prior to purchase but once I have it, Im done worrying. It works, it works very well, serves my purposes and looks fantastic.

3. Hard to say about coverage, it is good in general, but I did notice jumping between bands at some point.

As long as it holds a data connection that's a good start. LTE is inconsistent at times, even in strong areas. The Bionic couldn't handle any of it and would simply give up, seemingly, and lose data altogether for short or long periods of time.

That setting should be under Menu>Settings>Language & Keyboard>Touch Input (or whatever the stock keyboard is called) > from there you should be able to turn off haptic feedback on the kb.

On the heat issue, I guess if you think about it, the heat in this thing really doesn't have much of a place to go besides the screen, given how thin and packed it is, and that the back is kevlar...

Thanks....Now that's what I call an honest review!

Folks,

The warmth of the device may not bug most people now, since cool time of year, but people living in warmer areas will notice that when ambient temperature is warm, the device temp is an issue. The plug-in theory for it being warm was not the reason. The device stays warm regardless of plugged in or not. It is what it is due to the design, hardware and clockspeed used.

Try playing an Oid game for an extended period using a virtual pad. N64Oid & PSXdroid gets downright uncomfortable, since those games run the device full speed and the heat pipes through the display.

If you do not play games using a virtual pad much, not a biggie.

Added: When are the hard-core users going to... Oh yeah, most folks get theirs today! Duh!

Looking forward to tests and from folks that use virtual pads. I do not think my local store will appreciate me taking over a device again today..... Nah. I wish I tried regular NESoid now, but no time.

Still chiming in here n there. Finally let it charge all the way up. Cant do any real battery tests yet since I live n work in a bad reception area.

Screen definitely has a blueish tint to it on white backgrounds, comparing it to my Droid X1. Outdoor use is about the same as my DX1. If the Bionic is better than the DX1, its gonna be better than the RAZR.

Had an issue where using my GPS interfered with 3G, LTE. I had to toggle LTE, CDMA to get 4G back. Did I mention the camera works nice n fast? From focusing to being ready on first use, to using it for consectitive shots...all fast n quick.

I've been playing with mine a good bit... love the SmartActions! Basically takes several apps off the table to do things that one app can now. No need for Locale or Timeriffic.

One thing I want to point out though... everyone keeps referring to the "screen getting hot". I don't think it is the screen as much as the processor or the battery being loaded. I only noticed that it started getting warm when I was doing battery/processor intensive stuff(downloading, running tests, playing Angry Birds...). I didn't notice the screen getting warm as much as the Kevlar backing. I just think this argument will go away with time as people begin to realize that other phones warm up too... they just have thicker bodies to dissipate the heat.

You never actually completely lost data though, right? Just 4G?

Damn...now I'm not sure...lol. I was trying to do speedtest and it worked a lil bit, I didnt see any network indicator at the top. Toggling LTE, CDMA got the indicators to show back up.

I should be able to test this again today.

Quick question off topic...to activate WITHOUT store help, you just dial *228 and then option 2? Is that right? Gonna try and snag one on the way to my Lasik appt today, but don't have time to let them activate it. Just pay & go...tia.

No, *228 doesnt work for LTE phones, must be a SIM card thing. You have to call a number to activate the phone.

Also updating PRL's, (I think thats the update roaming capabilities option when dialing *228) cant use *228 anymore. So far I've seen:

it updates automatically
reboot the phone
remove the SIM card for 30 sec

Dont know which one works but I will probably be trying all the at some point.

Sean there is one drawback to the RAZR......no keyboard :)

I actually like a keyboard but Im good..

CK, me too - how is it getting used to a non-slider?

I'd love to see some pictures taken with the camera, I do take a lot of pics with my phone.

I went to a Best Buy yesterday to get my parents a new cell phone (upgrading from some 1996 model, I kid you not) and I picked up the RAZR demo unit and it felt SEXY!!!!!!!!! Hard not waiting to compare with Gnex next week...

Random thought: Given the sizes of the Gnex thread vs. the RAZR threads, you'd maybe think that so many more people would want to buy the Gnex but after handling the RAZR I think more people will want it!

Got mine yesterday... nice hardware but the battery life is horrible so far compared to my iPhone. After a full charge overnight, it's been off the charger for about 3 hours and with very little usage it has already dropped to 60%. Also, I found the Corp. email client to be unreliable with wifi turned on.

OK, my phone has been sitting on my desk for about an hours with two bars of 4G data active. The phone is very warm and I am wondering why the data is active. I shut off the phone and turned it back on thinking it would clear whatever process had the data moving but it is still active. So now I am disabling LTE to see if it helps battery life.
