Official Nexus 2 Discussion

W T F???? Don't buy this on a contract. In three weeks it will be down to half the price. I love the headlines. Humble release that's because there is nothing new/groundbreaking. Seems like the Google CEO got tired of his N1 and wanted something else. Probably saw the GS and liked it or could have something to do with Honeycomb why they went with Samsung.

Whats up with the no sd card setup? I know it has 16gigs internal, but any idea why they totall axed that? Seems like that was one of the things that all high powered android devices should have.

My 16gig card is very roomy right now, but I can definitely see wanting more if i decided to use it as a music player/movies...

So once this NS comes out, does that mean it will take over for the N1 for getting all future updates? Will the N1 be pushed to the side by Google?

Thoughts?

I wish that's not the case but tbh we don't really know. I mean our Nexus isn't 'Google's baby' anymore. I have a feeling that the first phone to get Honeycomb would be the NS.

No real way if knowing. The NS isn't much higher spec'd, so there isn't much separating them. I think the N1 needs to be kept updated for a while for all the 'legacy' devices.

Since I have about $200 in RZ points, I might just take the plunge and get the NS. At $329 I think it would be worth it unlocked.

Just realized that the phone doesnt have any notification indicator. This could be a dealbreaker for me. I hated not having it on the Captivate enough to return it. Even though I think Ive used the trackball twice in the past year, I live through it by color, telling me what type of notification I have. That and the little charging led at the top. I dont see the NS having anything like this.

It doesn't even have a charging indicator?

Id love to be wrong, but I havent seen anything on the phone that would prove otherwise. Especially if its just a recycle of the rest of the Galaxy line.

Seems like a pretty basic thing that all phones should have. I guess I didn't know the Galaxy line doesn't have that.

iv got one coming...due to upgrade one of my contracts in the next week so i'll try it....lol..cant see it being anywhere near my Desire HD,..sorry google you should have stayed with HTC,who in my opinion are making the best phones at the moment....

Agreed - except for battery skimping!

Dudes and all of three ladies that read this forum.. I'm going against the grain here and say I like the look/spec of the phone. Don't like the galaxy s feel but the screen is freaking amazing. As long as the gps works better than the galaxy s.. this may become my new phone. Keeping my N1 as a backup and occasional pillow though!

I've mentioned this somewhere (either this thread or another), but the Nexus S is not really a bad phone.

The reason why it's not "great" is because everyone was expecting a game changer, which it clearly is not.

It's got specs very similar to some of the top tiered phones out there right now.

The biggest advantage it has is the fact it'll get the newest updates first (I still believe the N1 will also get them at the same time, except for Gingerbread as I believe Goog wants to make their newest baby launch with the most up-to-date version.)

The screen is the only thing about Nexus S that makes me sad when I look at my Nexus One. I feel better when I get a notification and the trackball flashes - I know it'll help when I get my 32GB microSD, too.

Not to be too much of a nexus s fanboy, but typing on the galaxy s is quite a bit more comfortable for my big thumbs. Nothing to do with the quality of the digitizer just that little bit of extra size is just right for me. Maybe the 2.3 keyboard does the trick on my N1 tho. We'll see.

Big Merf im just curious what about the nexus s makes it a worthy successor to you? For alot of other Nexus 1 owners including myself the ns has very little to offer in terms of an actual upgrade, and while i will admit that by itself it actually seems to be a good phone, im curious to know what makes it worth leaving the N1 to you?

I agree with many of you.. The next installment is rather disappointing and there is no real advantage to the Nexus S other the screen NFC chip, FF camera, 16GB internals, etc. But I am one of those that must always try to have the latest, especially when i have some money on hand. Engadget says its the best android phone on the market, thats enough for me. I also believe that the N1 is nearing the end of its cycle and will be maybe receive 2 minor updates and be left behind when Honeycomb is released. I could be wrong but hey its just my opinion

I'm a nexus one owner and I too will definitely be getting a google nexus s. The nexus one is easily the best phone I've every owned however it does have a major issue with it's screen. It's also outdated in the fact that it lacks true multi touch. It's a sad day when google's former flag ship phone lacks the specs to receive the next google maps update; that in its self should speak volumes to all you nexus s naysayers. As far as the lack of led notification light there is an app that fixes that called noled( I think that's the name of it) it's on the android market. Basically it shines a single colored dot on the screen whenever you have a notification.

As far as the lack of expandable memory, in my opinion that is unforgivable however I have still yet to put a 16 gigabyte dent in my 32gb memory card which I have loaded with movies music pictures and apps. I've only used a little over 10gb. I will never understand why they took this feature out but I'm sure they probably had a good enough reason, oh well.

Other than that there is no denying samsung has THE BEST CELLPHONE TECH. <this is a fact. Yes HTC makes the best cellphone bodies <this is an opinion) they still lack many of the cutting edge hardware that sammy holds ie. Screens, chips, cameras.

The nexus s specs are not revolutionary yet they are in the top echelon of what's available today. It has the current best screen technology, it has the current best processor (which has still yet to see its full potential). It has a front facing camera. last but not least it has the latest and greatest version of that os which we all love known as android. And like the nexus one the os is pure and guaranteed updates straight from google as soon as their released.

The nexus one won't even support the next installment of google maps

Every other phone side from maybe the g2 will have to wait months for updates which will never be guaranteed yet ALWAYS tainted and missing key features.

Even the g2's version of android isn't truly "pure" it lacks the stock hotspot option which t mobile made google or htc pull.

All i'm saying is I'm sick of the nexus s hate and I will get the phone which reviewers are hailing as the best android phone on the market today.

P.S. For all of you spec leaches out there who happen to own an N1 please ask your self if specs were all that big of a deal to you why didn't you ever run out and grab any one of the 8 to 10 phones on the market today which all out spec the N1....

think about that ;-)

and when the dualcores come out i'd still keep my NS

I will answer for that. None of those 8-10 phones out spec'ed the N1 enough to make many of us want to jump ship. The Nexus S follows in the same suit, it doesn't offer that much more over the N1 which is almost a year old. This forum is littered with threads where many of us have stated that whatever phone just came out wasn't enough of a leap. The CES show is less then a month away and it will bring in a new era of phones (specifically Tegra 2 phones). Look at the LG Star, it's benchmarks are pretty insane, and that's not even running the optimized software yet! I am anxiously awaiting the show to see what is coming out, I am willing to bet my next phone will be at that show.

No one is hating on the fact that you are getting the Nexus S. I am sure it will be an excellent phone. When the N1 was released there was nothing else on the horizon, it pushed manufactures to release a rash of high end phones (starting with the incredible a few months after the N1's release). The Nexus S doesn't do that. It's not pushing the phone market (maybe except for the NFC chip).

I understand that google needs a development phone that has the features it will be trying to push in the near future (video chat, NFC, etc...). I think a lot of us (I could be speaking for myself) thought the Nexus namesake would be saved for ongoing "super phones". But rather it seems like google will just use the name for it's development line of phones (which is great, makes it really easy to spot). IMHO, the Nexus S is not a worthy successor to the Nexus 1.

If google was releasing a Tegra 2 phone at 1.2 ghz, a next gen screen (think iphone 4 screen at 4"), front facing camera, running 2.3 on the 16th, then I would happy the Nexus namesake was gracing the phone.

BigMERF-the 16th will be a sad day for this sub-forum, but a good day for the Nexus S sub-forum, don't forget to stop by!

I'm starting to sway... I like having the latest phone and I like the updates.

Along with everyone else, the NS doesn't excite me like the N1 did but it does have some advantages.

Newest Google spec hardware - sure to receive all 2011 updates. N1 3.0 is not guaranteed.

All updates will have all features. The maps rotate feature doesn't bother me, but it could well just be the start.

Internal memory. Apps to SD just doesn't cut it for me.

Screen. Undoubtedly better than the N1 in terms of touch function and visibility in sunlight etc.

I dropped my N1 and it is scraped. I hate that!

So I may well see what happens after Christmas, I'm not paying the current UK Carphone Warehouse sim free price that's for sure.

that maps swirling ,rotating 360' ,jumping ,flipping over 4 ledges ... that's just DUMB ! i won't be getting a new phone so i can twirl my maps..
about the 3.0 version ,i don't think we won't be getting the update as long as there is no hardware limitation ,and for now there isn't ...i say ...about another year of updates coming to N1 :D ,maybe we won't be getting it OTA ,but you can still manually upgrade it !

...and after that year ,i'm positive that we will see another nexus ,hope that is not from gaysung ,with best specs around !

in my point of view ,the NS is a poorly upgraded N1 ,that's all !
