Official OTA Update Discussion

I have Kies up and running right now.

Current Version v1.5.1.10074_45

Yes, there is an update....will keep you posted.

*edit* There is an update for the Kies software, I haven't checked any other updates. Do firmware update notifications come automatically through Kies?

I did the JH7 update for my Cappy via Kies and the second I plugged my phone in to my PC it, Kies came up with "firmware update" notification.

So is there a Kies update or Captivate update?

I think the first thing we need to do is find out what's in the update, if the fixes are similar then we all know the GPS fix is most likely not in there. Remember when JH7 came out everyone was claiming that the GPS worked, only to post a day or two later that it wasn't the case.

It is updated to 1.5.3.10093_80.

I don't know if there was a tethering option before, but there is now at the bottom launcher. There is also a new icon called ToWeb setting. This update took a LONG time to install. Going to hook up my phone to it after lunch.

Well the kies mini has no update for either itself or the phone. I doubt Samsung would release a US update via international kies after they've already released kies mini for US customers.

wishful thinking..another ota update is not going to happen anytime soon....lets face it guys..we r stuck with the non working gps on the captivate..samsung is not going to fix it..

It's the same thing with factory/'GSM' resets. It'll probably kick the GPS for a day or two before it starts acting up again.

If we've learned anything it's to not post a potential fix for the GPS until it's worked solidly for at least a few days.

So far after my GSM Reset, GPS has worked for 4 days. GPS Test comes up with 6-12 satellites within seconds and locks on very quick.

Same for Google Maps.

Here's to hoping it keeps up. I was also told that GPS would stop working on my first Captivate after a few days. It worked great for 3 1/2 weeks until it bricked.

Mine has too after a manual (pulled) update, any ideas what could be causing this?

Same here. After I did the JH7 update, I would do manual check for update every morning and it was saying "No Updates Available", but as of yesterday morning, it started saying "Cannot Communicate with AT&T Servers".

Interesting. So you're able to check for an update? When I click Software Update I get a "No firmware" message. I did do the JH7 OTA update without any errors.

There seems to be a few people complaining about this issue and there are a couple threads about it under Support and Troubleshooting. I had the problem as well. There is an easy fix: Link

Same here. I couldn't connect OTA or via Kies after JH7 update. I restored my phone on Tuesday and was able to connect to the server then (of course no updates were available). I tried again yesterday a day after the restore and was unable to connect again. I may just do a restore when Froyo hits before trying to pull it OTA.

As Topshelf mentioned, the only way to get Samsung to follow through is to contact them and complain enough that they feel the heat. When I called, they admitted that the update didn't work, and that "a future date they are not yet aware of" there will be another update to fix GPS.

Then 4 to speak with a customer service representative. Go as high up as you can.

The more complaint tickets they have on record, the hotter the fire under their asses to get this fixed.

So how long should I wait on the pulsating "S" part of the boot after flashing before I start to get worried?

About a minute. It takes a lot longer than normal, but shouldn't be longer than 1-2 minutes.

Well, it's been a lot longer than that...

Oh wait... it finally came up as I was typing this. Phew.

Note to everyone else: it can take a very, very long time. Easily 5+ minutes for me, but perhaps not quite 10.

I did the JH7 OTA successfully last week. The lag seems to be better (when hang up phone, doesn't take forever to return to previous screen), but it froze 3 times yesterday, and I had to remove the battery in order to restart!! It has happened occassionally before, but never 3 times in 1 day (1st time, I was in airplane mode, and tried to switch back by pressing the power button.....couldn't get the screen to come on. 2nd time, took it out of my purse and saw it had no service---circle with a slash in it....tried to swipe to unlock....refused to do anything....had to take out the battery. 3rd time, turned on the gps, tried to return to home screen, but the home screen was blank and none of the icons were present....screen wasn't responsive, had to take out battery to reboot again)

I've noticed that JH7 has made Allshare unstable. Might be coincidence but Allshare used to work fine and now crashes a lot. The video camera also seems to be a bit more unstable with crashes.
