Official OTA Update Discussion

I do not know if I want to update my baseband from the jf6 version. I do not currently use Tethering, but I like the idea of it being there.

I do not currently have the three button reset ability on my phone. I would like to have that because I do not want to brick my phone when I decide to play with it (it is currently less than 30 days old and I am still learning about it).

Is there anyone who has updated their phone and regretted it? Why?

Thanks,

The jester

If you have not rooted your phone or made other major changes the update process goes very well. I performed the update on the three Captivates we have in our family, it took just over seven minutes per phone and it went very smoothly. Afterwards the phones are even more responsive.

It seems to be those who rooted or made other changes that are experiencing problems.

That said, I'm about to root mine now as I have many things I want to do with it, but I purposely waited till after the update.

One thing (which is mentioned probably in this thread and I'm exposing myself for being too lazy to read ALL of it - :) )...from time to time, I get the notification screen again that says "software update installed" and basically something to the effect of the phone is ready to be used. This continues to happen and it's been over two weeks since my update...doesn't mess the phone up, that I can tell, but it sure is annoying.

ALSO...when I check for "software update" under the settings...it doesn't check anymore. It just has a small popup that says "no firmware." That's very weird.

From the looks of it it appears to be at least a semi official build. One report that GPS was working very well. Since this is still new, Im goign to download it and wait for a few days to let people test it 1st. If everything seems OK, Ill probably flash it.

maybe i'm a little lost here... but froyo == 2.2

so... is the 2.2 update ready for the captivate??? great =)

There is no official build yet...just some of the techies got their hands on a leaked version :D

Holy god. OMG! Will Samsung win all our hearts?? I am sooo tempted to start messing with stock because of this!! I am waiting til official 2.2 release....or was...or maybe still am. The OP on that thread said it looked like a release build. Maybe this is the update Samsung was referring to and AT&T did their own thing. Wow I'm so amazed that there is a WORKING build for the captivate running 2.2!!!! This my friends is news.

Firmware Version: 2.2

Baseband version: I897UCJI6

Kernel version: 2.6.32.9, jetaek.lee@sep-11 #1

Build number: FROYO.UCJI6

Some noticeable changes:

  • Vibration when the phone is fully powered off
  • Quandrant is only listing 311MB of Total RAM…where the remaining 201MB are is a mystery
  • Color icons in the settings menu
  • Pinch to overview of the homescreens (similar to HTC sense)
  • Adobe Flash 10.1 is preinstalled and works in the stock Android browser (tested using the desktop version of youtube.com)
  • Android App2SD
  • New Welcome to Android/Samsung setup wizard during first boot
  • Recent applications now includes a shortcut to the Task Manager
  • Mobile AP is enabled!
  • You can easily enable/disable data usage by using the menu that pops up when long pressing the power button
  • Quandrant Score: 977
  • 2 new live wallpapers, Spectrum & Beach
  • Quickoffice is preinstalled
  • GPS works “better” (crosses fingers), the signal readings are much more stable and quite a bit higher across the board
  • Stock Android keyboard is gone, Samsung and Swype keyboards remain, the Samsung keyboard has some UI enhancements (such as the number keys being visible when the letters are)

Yeah, here is a good write up of it, and it does look like a leaked "official" rom, so probably a test rom or something. It will probably be "JI7" (as opposed to "JI6") and late October before it hits- if we can judge by the pattern of the leak of JH6 and we got JH7 roughly 30 days later...

...I am very excited...

definitely not the final product as I've seen froyo on other phones and it doesn't have the lag that this has- But it is very tolerable where it is at right now. I recommend trying it out - GPS is much better - getting location/locks in 2 seconds.. will test this tomorrow to see if it STAYS this way :)

Er....Flash stopped half way through and now I can boot into recovery mode but it cannot find update.zip and cannot boot OS (stop at Galaxy S screen then goes black). How can I get back into Download mode from recovery mode and re-flash with this Odin file?

With the phone off hold down the volume buttons and plug in the USB cable coming from your PC. Should go into download mode.

This build rocks. I am going to restore my backup of my regular ROM, but hopefully this thing gets rooted. Then I'll come back to it.

I'm downloading it right now. I'm going to continue to monitor the forums for a day or two to get an overall consensus before I dive in.

I'm still new to the Android game so would anyone be kind enough to give me a breakdown of how to install this when I get brave enough?

edit: BTW, I recently downloaded and installed "Unleash the Beast," is that something I'll need to undo prior to attempting to install Froyo?

...since this is now been merged into the Official OTA thread...

No, Froyo IS NOT available yet as an official OTA.

Is there a way to recover data w/o needing to go to homescreen? Any hack or anything?

Here is the update just in case you are interested: since I couldn't figure out how to recover data and it was almost time to return this phone, I did a hard reset and luckily, it did not delete any of my data :)

Also, with the OTA update on new phone, I see performance improvement and much much better GPS. It locks in within 10 seconds (mostly), 15 at most.

Only thing I dont like is that I cannot connect my phone to PC as modem

Why was this thread (which was a separate thread about froyo) be merged with the OTA thread only for us to be told to discuss it elsewhere? No offense (and I truly mean that) but I think the threads are being modified too aggressively. Threads just disappear (if they were merged) and you don't know where they went unless you posted in them and go into your history. Like the Vibrant update, that thread deserved its own thread. But it disappeared into a huge long thread no doubt...because I certainly can't find it.

The you tube widget was working fine BEFORE the update. Now it is unresponsive half the time, and is way less user friendly.

Butt at least you fixed the gipiss.... Oh yeah you couldn't fix that either.

Just called ATT today to ask if the GPS support department had any guidance on my Captivate problems. The agent claimed to not have heard about any GPS issues (to which I responded that is like a Ford person saying they hadn't heard of any issues with the Pinto gas tank). They apparently got a memo just TODAY that JH7 was being released. Here is the text of the memo, for what it's worth.

AT&T : How Do I Update The Software On My AT&T SGH-i897 (Captivate) Phone To JH7 Through Kies Mini?

How Do I Update The Software On My AT&T SGH-i897 (Captivate) Phone To JH7 Through Kies Mini?
An update to improve the Samsung Captivate's GPS performance is now available. Captivate customers will receive a notification on their device that an update is available and will simply need to download the file to update their phone. The updates will be pushed to devices over the next few weeks.
The update for the Captivate will also improve additional device functions, such as media scanning time, add the full version of Quickoffice and address Microsoft Exchange 2003 policy support.
It is highly recommended to attempt the JH7 update through Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) process versus Kies Mini due to simplicity. Please click here for more information.

Common Questions/Troubleshooting

General Questions

    • No. JH7 is maintenance release.
  • Will Kies Mini work on my Mac?
    • No. Kies Mini works on the PC only. You can attempt a FOTA update however.
  • Can I use Kies to perform the update?
    • Kies is not recommended nor offically supported on Galaxy S phones Stateside. If you have a verison of Kies, it is recommended to remove it entirely before installing Kies Mini.
  • What are the capabilities of Kies Mini?
    • Kies Mini is a simple tool that performs a firmware update for a phone. Other options that may accompany the tool are unsupported for this product.
  • Can I use Kies Mini to update other models of Galaxy S?
    • No. This build 10082_8-1 of Kies Mini is approved for Captivate only.
Kies Mini Does Not Detect The Phone:
  • <LI style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; LINE-HEIGHT: 150%; COLOR: #333333; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-list: l8 level1 lfo13" class=MsoNormal>I am having problems with Kies Mini detecing the phone. What can I do?
    • <LI style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; LINE-HEIGHT: 150%; COLOR: #333333; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-list: l8 level2 lfo13" class=MsoNormal>First, try enabling USB debugging mode and then connect.
    • Depending on the amount of data stored on the memory, this could impair Kies Mini ability to detect device if phone is set to Samsung Kies mode. It may be necessary to remove the microSD card if inserted. Should problems persist, the internal memory may need to be purged . Backup up all desired data and goto Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory data Reset. Follow the onscreen instructions and after reboot, attempt to connect to Kies Mini
    • The Media Scan process could produce a loop if connected while in progress. If this occurs, disconnect and power cycle the device. Wait until the device fully boots and the process is finished before connecting again.
Others:
  • Can Kies Mini recover my phone after a failed update through the program?
    • The program supports an emergency recovery mode where it may be able to update the phone if it can still enter download mode. To boot the phone into download mode, hold down both volume keys while inserting the data cable attached to the PC. If the phone is unable to boot into the mode, it will require servicing.
  • I receive an error regarding unregistered device What can I do?
    • The program can report this message if it detects a software build other than the official launch software of JF6. There are other reasons why this error occurs however phone registration through samsung.com will not resolve the error.
