Official OTA Update Discussion

I have heard horror stories of rooted captivate phone not being able to get AT&T ota (over the air) updates. I understand unlocked phone is not the same as rooted phone but I couldn't help but wonder about side effects. Can anyone confirm with me if an unlocked Captivate will be able to handle AT&T OTA updates? Or are there any risks?
 
well i know the ota update removes the unlock or whatever so i would hold off until there is another way to unlock it that is compliant with the update
 
I'm not fully understanding this post since I got JH7 last week when I did an OTA Software update through the phone. You're saying AT&T is only now claiming this came out today? And it hasn't helped the GPS issue.
 
this is kinda funny cuz I just got a text from AT&T today approx at 1:20 that notified me that an update is avail and when asked to download click OK

uhmmmmmm I updated to JH7 this past weekend...........
 
Yeah, that's what I tried to explain to the agent, that "everyone on the Android forums already has JH7." In fact, I asked him repeatedly whether the update he was referring to was JH7 and he was entirely non-responsive like I was speeking Chinese. I think he was worried that I was gonna' slam him on the survey, which I did not intend to do - he did all he could with what little (NO) info ATT provided to him.
 
The other day, I showed a coworker who has a Captivate how to get the JH7 firmware update. She's new to smart phones so I had my phone out too and showed her how to get the update and it said I can't check for an update for another 645 hours lol. I don't dare check it again incase it tacks on more time. Does anybody know what's up with that? It was the first time I checked since the update.
 
Hey guys I'm new to the forums. I have had a problem with my Captivate since the gps patch when I go to software update it says cant connect to at&t servers! It used to say no updates found. So I called samsung tech support and the guy was clueless he also said when I asked about froyo that it wasnt gonna be released till after the galaxy tab has been released! Do these people even know? He also said my update prob was because there was no updates available! I am worried that I wont be able to get the ota update to froyo since the software update cant connect to at&t's servers. Even at&t said they dont know about this issue. I have seen others on the forums with this same problem! Also if I have mini kies will I be able to get the froyo update thru kies? I hope this samsung tech guy is wrong about froyo not being released till after the galaxy tab is released! With the leaks I was hoping it would be out this month! Thanks

I have not yet received a message from AT&T that an update is available. We have 3 other Captivates in the house and they have all got thier messages and I have not. Has everyone else already received thiers? I have tried several times to manually get the update and I keep getting the connection failed message.
 
I have not, nor has my wife. We purchased our phones 30 days ago TODAY. Anyway, not too worried about it as I figure Froyo may be here eventually so I do not need the intermediary step.
 
I have not received a notification from AT&T that an update is available, but I did use Kies (international) to do the update manually about 2 weeks ago, when JH7 was first released.

I don't know if AT&T has a way of knowing which phones have been updated or if they are still in the notification process and haven't made it around to me yet.
 
I finally got mine the other day after I updated mine with the Kies mini (firmware update only) there is tread on this forum that talks about using kies mini to do the firmware updates
 
Not only can you use Kies Mini to force the update without waiting for notification, but it saves usage on your data plan.
 
Stop mashing threads into this one!!!!! You really think throwing a thread into another thread is helping anything? This "thread" is now a disjointed convoluted piece of crap that should just be deleted.
 
Actually, one merged thread is a hell of a lot easier to track than 1,000 threads on the same exact topic with the same exact questions seeking the same exact answers.
