Help [Official] OTA update thread

Well I will be hopping on this tonight. I had a honey-do list even bigger that the EPIC READ that was Flashing the factory firmware with Dick and Jane. Plus I need to clear away the tears from my eyes, the gripping emotional roller coaster really got to me. :D
Quick question, a buddy was over Friday night helping clean the hops out of my fridge and I mentioned all this. (Yes I have friends shocking I know ) he emailed me the "nexus toolkit" would it help in all this or should I disregard and follow directions like a good little boy?

If you're talking about Wug's toolkit, It does support 5.1 now so it would work too, but you're still going to have to get the divers installed, etc. so while it's maybe a few less clicks and a little less typing (assuming it works first time out of the box) you now know what's going on ... AND, should the toolkit NOT work, you know how to fix it manually. :D

Of course if you DO use the toolkit, you have to buy your own pocket protector. :p

Oh, and it still wipes your phone when you unlock the bootloader so backup backup backup!

Don't forget to backup!

This usually will get you conflicting answers. Personally, I'd suggest avoiding toolkits - because you won't really learn what's happening, and if things go wrong with the NRT, you may not know what was successful and what failed, and how to recover. As you can see, there are several steps and the toolkit is basically doing those for you in the background.

So, my vote goes for "follow lunatic's steps" (never thought I'd write those words anywhere) :)

I was wondering if anyone is having the same problem as I have. I have talked to two T-Mobile reps and they have not been able to help either. I just bought a Nexus 6 from T-Mobile and I cannot get the device to update past android 5.0. I know that the 5.1 update is still being rolled out, but I can not even get the 5.0.1 update. I know that I could flash an image, but I do not want to do that. The phone works fine, minus a few bugs with Bluetooth, I just want to make sure that it receives the updates. Here is what I have tried so far...

- Going into "about phone" and checking for updates manually several times over several different internet connections.
- Factory resetting the phone
-wiping the partition cache

Any other ideas or suggestions? Anyone who has had similar issues?

I can only guess based on observation, but there was a T-Mobile variant of the 5.1 firmware ((LMY47M) that has disappeared from the Google developer's website. I have to think that for whatever reason, they've pulled it and perhaps stopped the OTA's. There is some speculation that the M variant includes code in preparation for enabling T-Mobiles WiFi calling, but that's all it is ... speculation.

The differences between D, E and M have yet to be outlined, but the vast majority of Nexus 6 OTA's are D. That would work for you as well, but you'll need to install it manually.

So, my vote goes for "follow lunatic's steps" (never thought I'd write those words anywhere) :)

If you do it late at night in a tench coat, I'll have to renew that restraining order. :p ;)

@sirdedlock ,

if the phone is new and under a returns policy grace period, simply return it.

however, if the phone works as normal (receives texts, mms, calls, connects to the internet, streams youtube, gets mail, etc.,) then the phone is most likely fine and as lunatic suggested perhaps the ota was pulled.

give it a couple more days or again if its under the returns period, replace.

or, if you are that anxious, flash it (even though you don't want to). cant have it both ways.. ;)

On Vodafone in the UK and received update this morning. Have been super pleased with the N6 even with the odd random shut down. Hopefully this update will fix that and I will look forward to many years with this phone! At the moment I can't see what more Google could offer me to make me want to change it.

I have a Nexus 6, stock (unmodified), running on Sprint in suburban Dallas. For the past two weeks, I have been manually checking two or three times a day for an OS update. Finally tonight, I got Lollipop 5.1. The download inexplicably took several minutes on my fast Wi-Fi, but everything else went smoothly. As expected, it is Version D.

I'm a little confused here, has anyone actually been updated to 5.1 on T-Mobile? I have a fairly new (~1 month) Nexus 6 and I'm still running 5.0. I'm waiting for 5.1 so I can root it and get the LED back for notifications.

Please confirm T-Mobile has actually pushed out 5.1. I would like to know if I'm behind.

Thanks

If you are anyway planning to root it, I'm assuming you are familiar with ADB sideloading. If so, just sideload the OTA file.
Google rolls out the OTAs in waves. Other folks have received the OTA, but no guarantees about when you will get it.

Hi guys, Lucky Armpit here. I know this shows it's my first post but I had to create a new account... Email address changed and I can't reset my password and I was too lazy to wait. :p

Anyway, I got a Nexus 6 from Motorola and I'm using it on Verizon. I sideloaded the 5.1 update and it's working great. I'm trying to help a friend who has the AT&T variant. Was going to side load 5.1 for him too but chickened out when I saw his version is different than mine. His build number is LRX22C. I downloaded the LMY47D version because that's what my build number is. Is it safe to sideloaded the LMY47D version onto his LRX22C? I figured it was since it says "from LRX22C" but just want to make sure. Thanks in advance!

As I understand it, D is for AT&T and E is for Verizon. Apparently they're more or less functionally interchangeable. The M version is for T-Mobile and would probably be OK too, but has some special tweaks to prepare for the release of T-Mobile's,WiFi calling.

Holy crap, I'm glad I'm not on ATT. My Sprint Nexus 6 got the update to 5.1 two days ago. Waiting until summer is absurd. Also, Sprint phones have no carrier bloatware and no carrier branding.

I think they make some unfounded assumptions in the article.

Well it appears that Google and Motorola are not in as much control over system updates as we would hope. The Android 5.1 update for the AT&T Nexus 6 is apparently slated for an official rollout in June.June?

First, manufacturers are never in control of when updates get pushed to Nexus devices. That gnex debacle with Verizon aside, it's Google that schedules the OTA's. From what I've read, it goes something like this ...

When an update is ready for release, it get's pushed out to 1% of devices, sort of like a beta test in the wild to see if any ugly problems arise without borking everyone's phone. If nothing crops up, then a regular rollout begins with 25% getting the update. Again, if there's an issue, it will be to the smaller group. If no issues arise then 50% more go and finally the remaining phones get it. If you are in the last group, even if there are no problems with the update, it could be 6 to 8 weeks before you see it. If they have to reissue, then it could be anyone's guess. The only thing I haven't seen is a reasonable explanation of how Google picks who is in which group.

The article doesn't really cite the source of a June release date. I'm not saying they are wrong, I just don't know where they pulled that date from.

I am at a total lost for words..... One of the main reasons I got a nexus device was for updates to come in a timely matter and not wait for months and months...

Thinking of trying what the article suggested to do..

Why would you jump through all those hoops instead of just flashing the freely-available factory image? Especially if you have to do a factory reset anyway...

Google always posts the factory firmware on the developers pages as soon as it's ready to fly. That, IMO is the best way to update. OTA's have always been problematic with leaving stuff around or introducing incompatibilities with old apps.

If you really want to be on the bleeding edge of updates, learn how to backup, flash the factory firmware and restore with minimal time lost. If you'd rather not start fresh each time, then OTA's are often uploaded by those who get it first so others can sideload them. It's still usually within the first week of release.

The thing that probably won't happen is Google pushing out OTA's to everyone on the same day.

Thinking of trying what the article suggested to do.

Make sure you know exactly what the backup and reset option does. I don't know if it backs up email, mailbox settings or SMS. It might also not backup saved games or app data. You could get an unpleasant surprise.
