Help [Official] OTA update thread

I am at a total lost for words..... One of the main reasons I got a nexus device was for updates to come in a timely matter and not wait for months and months...

Why would you jump through all those hoops instead of just flashing the freely-available factory image? Especially if you have to do a factory reset anyway...

This is a question I've heard several times too!!! I've had a Nexus device for a while (3 generations of devices). After seeing me always have the latest software, several non-techie friends of mine have gotten Nexus devices too. And lately, they ask me the same question. "Why don't I get the update right away?" "I don't want to install drivers, or install fastboot/ADB, and unlock/flash anything - why can't I get it OTA on day 1, instead of having to wait 2-3 weeks, or even 6-8 weeks".

Frankly, I don't know why Google can't do an on-demand OTA for folks who just have to have it, after the first week of soak-test.

Does this bother me? Not really - but I am comfortable with flashing the images (well, whenever El Goog posts it!!! Sidenote, WTH Google? Where is the "M" image when OTA is already out? For crying out loud!).
I do help out folks with flashing the images too, but again, why not make it available on demand after a week or so of soak test to weed out critical bugs?

Hey Lunatic, I thought I was stuck but I got it. Sorry it took me nearly a week, but I am officially on 5.1 and the angels are singing as my phone settings are being restored. ;)

Thanks again for the unlocking and flashing for dummies (me being the dummy) tutorial. You sir are the man.
:D

I gotta share this... Side loaded 5.1M for T-Mobile last Friday. Had a couple of days of use and charge to let my battery settle down. I'm constantly on Ring Central which is like a work equivalent to google voice but would typically slaughter my battery on versions before 5.1. I have had 1 hour of wifi calls on ring central and 1 hour of regular cell voice time, 2h14ms screen on time but total phone on time since last charged is 56 hours. I have 22 freaking percent left on the battery. That's just amazing. I know I didn't use my phone a lot but that's almost 2.5 days off charger with regular use for me.

Stupid question. I know my bootloader is now unlocked. Does this mean I have rooted the phone or is that something else entirely?

Unlocking the bootloader is essentially what any nexus owner should do to their phone from the very beginning. It doesn't do anything specifically other than allow you to go on and root the phone, or use Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit to do a bunch of automated things. Unlocking the bootloader is nothing more than a metaphor for taking the "training wheels" off your phone.

As rhray said, rooting is the next step on your journey :) Only if you want to of course.

Note that if you root, you won't be able to apply any OTAs from Google directly - you will need to either revert back to stock to apply the OTA, OR just apply the new factory images directly (I do the latter). If you don't root, you will be able to successfully apply the OTA directly.
With root however, you get adaway (among other things)

Not exactly. There are security concerns. With an unlocked bootloader it is relatively easy, with physical possession of the phone, to get files/data off the phone even if it is locked. That's why unlocking the bootloader forces a factory reset (to wipe the user partition) and why companies that require secure encrypted devices require that bootloaders be locked.

For me it's not a huge concern, so I keep my bootloader unlocked for convenience sake, but I do assume the security risks.

Okay, all you happy flashers, you now have a new challenge. Maybe D, E, and M weren't good enough. Google has just posted a Factory Image for I.

Yes, but you'll notice that even the "I" variant is still listed as 5.1.0 which leads me to believe it's specific to a carrier ... Sprint perhaps?

So far, it looks like D is for AT&T, E is Verizon, M is T-Mobile, which is why I'd think "I" was Sprint. Nobody is saying for sure and it appears that all variants will work on any carrier. Personally, I think someone in the Android dev team is experimenting. o_O

FWIW- I bought N6 from Moto and never had a sim in it until after I received 5.1, which is version D. My carrier is Verizon and the phone works perfect.

lunatic59:

My Nexus 6 is stock on Sprint. Earlier this week, 5.1 was pushed to me via OTA. It is D, not I. So your assumption is incorrect. Sorry to ruin your day.

D is the update that is being pushed to all phones by Google, regardless of carrier. The reasons for the E, I and M variants are only speculative, but they are all the same version of Android. A cookie to the person who has the lowdown on these puppies.

So any further confirmation of a June OTA release for AT&T?

I hate that I'm not proficient in rooting, side loading, etc. I'm too afraid to screw it up and then end up with a paperweight.

I had never done it prior to last night. It's really easy if you have some level of understanding of computers in general. Follow the directions and get after it. We believe in you !
(I am not responsible for any damage you cause your device, hair you loose, alcohol you consume, or words you get in trouble for screaming in the night)

Fair point and I certainly don't mean to start a battle on the issue because you are 100% correct but doesn't the whole point of taking off the training wheels on your bike open yourself to the risk of skinning your knee or other security risks to your body? ;)

I got the update Friday morning. I was at home and didn't use my phone till that evening. When I did it was several hours of one problem after another including the phone simply shutting down and not coming back on. Other times the screen went dark and wouldn't respond. I did multiple restarts. The next morning I tried to check Facebook and I got this error message app not installed. I finally did what I was hoping to avoid a factory reset. When I did instead of rebooting it with important things from LG Optimus L90 as I did when I got my device I selected the new device. I had a bit of scare because I had several website's book marked and when I went to find them, they were gone. I finally figured out I had to tap the star symbol thing for them to come out so that's been my 5.1 experience so far
