***Official Samsung Fascinate 2.2 Speculation Thread***

I agree with some things about the Iphone.....I'll get one at some point because of the ease of Itunes integration and moving music files over to phone....also pictures has been a pain in the ass with the Fascinate..can't seem to put all my albums on the phone because it tries to pull video and pictures from my file and there is not enough space....with the Iphone I could select if I wanted video moved over(which I do not). ANYONE HAVE A SOLUTION FOR THIS?

But....I love the swype on the Fascinate...hands down a must have!

Also the video/sound recorder on the Iphone is far better...audio doesn't distort like the Fascinate at loud concerts.....I know this first hand from a buddy that has an Iphone 4 and we were both at same concert and recorded in same location....his is clear....mine sounds like butthole.

I agree that Apple just does it right out of the box.....I never felt the need to tinker with what works. Fascinate could be better possibly with updates...but I am tired of lack of support from Samsung.

And the Incredible is a weird user interface that isn't like Iphone at all(mainly the dial/phone section)...the Fascinate is much more similar.

Also...the app LAUNCHER PRO has made the Fascinate MUCH BETTER!

I bought my Fascinate on December 22. I called Verizon today to inform them that it's coming back within my 30 days, and that I'll be pre-ordering an iPhone.

My gripes with the Fascinate are as follows:

- I'm on my 3rd one in 2 weeks. The first one wouldn't play YouTube videos, at all. The second one froze up and went insane on me. No, I didn't root it. I'm not a "power" user. If this is happening now, how many problems am I going to have down the line?

- I was promised the Froyo update by years end when I bought the phone. I understand, it's not going to make the phone THAT much more functional, however, the general lack of support is disturbing.

- Compared to the 4G iPhones that I've used, Android phones seem to have a somewhat hesitant UI.

- The Fascinate has NO visual text / SMS notification alerts. Not even an LED. Seriously? I know, I can use NOLED, but should I really have to?

- Media sync doesn't work. At all.

- Let's not even mention the GPS. I don't care if Monday's "update" addressed it or not.

- Bing. Seriously? What was I thinking when I bought this phone?

- The iPhone won't have 2 pages of bloatware applications that require root or jailbreaking to delete.

- I own a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. I absolutely love both of them for their simplicity and consistent functionality.

- Long term support, Sammy vs Apple is a no brainer.

I'm sure there are a few other issues that I can think of, but, I don't have to go on. My phone is going back Friday, and I'm pre-ordering on the 3rd.

Welp, I'm not going to type out a huge long reply as to what can be done to "fix" the issues you outline (partly because I don't think there's really a good "fix" for them).

I'm also not going to accuse you of only desiring form over function (if that were the case, why would you be getting a smartphone? Obviously you want SOME level of functionality).

I also will not accuse you of representing the masses (although that one I don't think was meant to be duragatory) even though it sounds like a device for the masses such as the iphone is right for you.

What I WILL do is congratulate you on making the right choice for YOU. When I got my fascinate, I knew the iPhone was around the corner. I knew the WP7 was also around the corner. What I did NOT know was that there would be such lack of support for the device I chose. It really takes away from the experience of a smartphone when I can't use the browser to go to my university homepage cause it's all in flash and we don't have it yet. Or when I'm trying to use something like google latitude so my wife knows where I'm at on our hiking trail but I can't cause it only supports 2.2 or higher.

(I go to a trail by my house with my dogs. It would be VERY nice if she could just look at her phone and know where I'm at and how far away I am without having to call me since my phone is usually buried in a pocket under my snowpants)

So good for you! My wifes line is eligible for an upgrade in october. I definately won't be going with another samsung device. I may even venture over to an iPhone.

What fixes are you seeing?

On the Non-Rooted device- GPS locked in about 2 secs. (was taking 30-60 before on this device non-rooted)

^ this was a big issue for me.

The PDF fix does not seem to be working, the ThinkFree Office PDF handler did not open a pdf- though loading Adobe Reader will open the same pdf without issue.

I was going to suggest the incredible, but it sounds like the Iphone's form over function is for you then.

Leonard's response is a little more sensible here. Calling choosing the new iPhone 4, whether from VZ or ATT, "choosing form over function" is not an accurate descriptor of what Hyper doing. He's choosing a different form and different functions over a different form with different functions.

As far as form goes, having used both the iPhone 4 and SF in my own hands, the form of the Fascinate is quite excellent for such a large 4" screen. It's also very ergonomic, thin and lightweight - vastly superior form to devices such as the DX. The iPhone, while heavier, is still very thin and ergonomic.

As for function, where is the easy folder arrangement system on the Fascinate? Where's the front facing camera? And even though the Fascinate CAN have google maps and good GPS performance, where are those functions out of the box? I had to install google NAV manually on a GOOGLE PHONE. That is a page straight from the book on Failtopia. And some people have been waiting a LONG TIME for their GPS to work correctly. I've never seen Apple take nearly that long to fix such a major bug that root and non-root users complain about alike.

And don't forget that even though the Fascinate is currently Verizon's best smartphone for strictly 720p video recording and photo shooting, but the iPhone still takes better quality photos and videos, and is now the benchmark that many other smartphones are measured against. I recall none that have bested, or even tied, the iPhone 4 in this particular aspect.

I've already pointed out that simply as a reader it's superior to most as well, and it is certainly superior to the Fascinate. Text is much sharper and crisper.

So it's not choosing simply "form over function." He chooses the particular form and function set that best meet his needs. You lose some functions in the Fascinate that the iPhone has, so you've got to look at it from both sides.

Updated using Odin... All is well this morning. Had to reload and reinstall stuff, Have not re-rooted yet... seems some of the fixes worked out well.

Did this update change the GPS icon in the notification bar as well? That looks different than the one I have currently on my unrooted(for the moment) DI01.

If I install this using Odin, am I going to have to reinstall anything (ie. apps, etc)? (I'm trying as hard as I can to hold out rooting for 2.2/2.3 roms to be released.)

ye, dj05/dl09 addes 2 new icons (stat_sys_location_e911) that remain in your status bar

So now that some people have this dl09 update, what's the consensus? Before it was released I've heard a lot of negative about it. Even read some people call it "crap."

Folks that have it, what do you think so far in regards to GPS, stability, speed, battery life, having the buttons stay on longer, etc.??

And have any of you rooted it again? If so, how's that going?

If you push it in odin then it will wipe data

ive called dl09 crap, mainly because it doesnt fix any of the issues that dj05 had...and dj05 failed verizons testing...so really its just a slightly altered dj05...and previously i didnt see the point to it

if it otas though, then there is a point to the non-rooted crowd...still im sticking w/dj05 as far as touchwiz goes

Easiest way I know to accomplish this is to move the videos to a hidden folder (folder that begins with . ) If you are talking about videos you took with the camera, they are currently in DCIM/Camera. So just add a folder DCIM/Camera/.video and move all your videos into there and they will no longer show in gallery. There is probably an alternative gallery app that makes this easier, though.

Well, I just came back from the VZW store. Here's how the conversation went:

Me: "Good afternoon. I'd like to return this Fascinate. I bought it two weeks ago. I'd like to get on the list for the iPhone as well."

VZW CSR: "Why do you want to return it for the iPhone? Your Samsung is a better phone."

Me: "Well, the features that I bought the phone for are lacking, or just inoperative."

VZW: "There are updates scheduled for it."

Me: "Well, the iPhone simply works out of the box. No GPS lock issues. No lack of visual SMS notification. No failed Media Sync connections. Not to mention, I know Apple will continue to update and support their products in a timely and reliable fashion. Samsung is really lackluster in that department."

VZW: "Well, you know the iPhone doesn't have flash?"

Me: "Yes. I did my homework. I also know that it does HTML 5."

VZW: "Also, so you know, if you get the iPhone, you're stuck with it."

Me: "Excellent."

So, it's official. I feel that I'm getting the best phone for ME. Not for what everyone else claims I need in a cell phone. It'll be in on or before the 10th! Woo hoo! Viva la Manzana!

everyone needs to get the device that works best for them...and in many cases that will be the iphone :o

Well congrats. Id still rather have a Fascinate because I'm more into specs than form.

Just like the "form over function" criticism doesn't work, neither does the "specs over form" argument.

iPhone 4 has higher resolution.
iPhone 4 has a better camera for 720p video AND photos.
iPhone 4 has TWO cameras, one for front facing, even on Verizon.
iPhone 4 has better talk time.
iPhone 4 has better web browsing time.

In specs and in functions they both trade blows. I'm not trying to pee in your cheerios or anything, but I hate stereotypes and gross generalizations that are not based in fact.

Coming from a happy Fascinate owner.

Actually I've been trying to "confirm" that and so far haven't been able to. I mean I can't find anything that makes me believe the iPhone will last a longer day than the Fascinate does. In real life usage anyway.
