The slow rollout of Android 4.0 to Samsung's recent Galaxy devices continues, and the latest variation to receive Ice Cream Sandwich is the Galaxy S II LTE. We should all be familiar with the ICS feature set by now, as well as Samsung's TouchWiz alterations. The news was spotted on Samsung's Korean site, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the new software popping up on devices elsewhere shortly (AT&T's Skyrocket already saw a leaked update in March). According to a tweet from the company, it's still working on an update for the LTE's 720p-screened HD cousin (although we hear Tizen already works great), but you can hit the source link for more information.

Imagine it will be delayed again, still reading about people having problems with the 2.3.6 upgrade.

I think that the update is overvalued. Because of the customizations including the unchanged TouchWiz, not much of ICS would be evident. The only advantage would be the installation of some programs that work only in ICS (Chrome, for example). However, I am not missing even this too much. I have to say that the Firefox Beta that has been released this week is a great browser.

I really do not expect to see that much of a change or any specific benefits.
 
i would have to agree with you. if you use touchwiz, the update isn't anything special. i would also have to agree that i'm looking forward to the official update so that i can run ICS specific apps such as chrome and apex launcher.

there's other features that make ICS worth it.

IF you go to XDA developers, there is an Odin 1 click ICS upgrade for our phones that works just fine and takes you to 4.0.4

Well, it offers many interface improvements but Touchwiz will cover most of these. There are many improvements in the underlying OS and the phone would appear svelter than it was before; there are improvements in notifications, multitasking, widgets and other elements.

All-in-all, it is certainly a good upgrade to have because it would also allow some of the ICS specfic programs to run on the phone. The ICS upgrade for the Galaxy SII Skyrocket has alreadly leaked; you can download it and install it now if you so wish. However, it is a "destructive update" meaning that all your data and customizations will be erased and that you would have to install them again.

No. If you want ICS before the official AT&T rollout, you will have to root and flash your phone with a custom rom. Many people find this process intimidating, but it's not that terrible really. If you want help, just let us know, or you can read a bit about it in Galaxy S2 Skyrocket - All Things Root - Android Forums which will give an indication of the process.

So I do not have to root my phone to do this ?
Also, to simplify for my understanding....
1.Make sure you have all current samsung drivers
2.Download the Odin 1 click application
3.Remove battery
4.Place battery back in
5.Hold down volume rockers and plug in to computer
6.Click
7.Finished

Is this correct ?
 
I am new enough that I'm going to take the conservative approach... wait for the official rollout, hoping that it won't have the destructive effects described above. I don't really want to re-set all my icons, favorites, shortcuts, apps, and settings.

Once I get an official version of ICS on there, I'll attempt a root. Thanks so much everyone for all the specific info.
