My brain likes fun and novel analogies and mixed metaphors (even if they are less solid, yes it is amateur) so I usually tend to think of Pitfall! Harry or Tarzan swinging vine to vine in the jungle when it comes to cell phone tower handoff.

If you were swinging from vine to vine, you would likely wait to let go of the vine you are on until after you grab the next vine and have a secure hold on it, otherwise you risk a big fall and getting eaten by the crocodiles below.

Same is true when calling on the go. The well designed networks are configured with tower coverage areas that overlap so that when possible, you can 'hold onto' the tower/s you are on and seamlessly 'grab onto' the next tower/s as you go without dropping the call. If the gap between towers is too large and you try to 'look ma' no hands!' it to cross the gap and 'grab the next vine' chances are high you will fall to your death. Or drop your call.

So, next time you drop a call from a bad tower hand off imagine yourself being eaten by a crocodile, falling into a tar pit, or plunging into water hole. ;):D

Thanks Maxwell for your field equations and your delicious Coffee. :p

I'll be here all week, refunds will be provided at the door

i was not happy before ..when i had a drop call.

now.. I am will be totally pissed!!!! i just lost my leg to a croc!!!!
wait till CS gets my call!

Yes it is, but all that means is that Sprint is planning to have LTE active in LA in 2012. Nothing more specific than that yet.

Network Vision/LTE Deployment Running List - Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Well, if 1st round markets aren't completed already (based on the timeframe indicated (12/11/11 - 3/31/12), then I hope they're very close.

2nd round of cities start depending on the completion of the 1st round cities (and some 2nd round cities are said for possible "early" start for buildout, which may cause delays in 1st round city completion). With respect to "L.A.", Orange County is in that 2nd round of cities, and the 2nd round buildout (assuming all is on schedule) is 4/1/12-12/31/12.

Just following the guidline of S4GU, I think it's a pretty good bet that L.A. will be covered by the time the LTEvo is released. Again, everything is just a guessitmate until people in L.A. buy either the Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper to report their experiences with LTE.

So, if you're really anxious to see how Sprint's LTE is doing in L.A., prior to the LTEvo release, I'd take a look through the Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper forums to see if anybody in the L.A. market is reporting their experiences. Those phones are rumored to be releasing the next couple weekends.

This is a really good idea! Hopefully a good number of people buy the Viper and Nexus so we have a decent sampling of different people and locations to draw conclusions from.

Maybe a majority of the LTE talk should happen in the Sprint forum or have a specific thread in each phone forum so people like us can check around without having to hunt and peck each area. Ya know streamline things a little bit?

Thanks. I saw a map on S4GRU that showed LA as not active for LTE as of the beginning of this month. I'd love it if LTE were active here by the time the LTEvo comes out.

I'm ok with the duplicate for now.

I've not forgotten my promise to provide forum/thread structure around here by any means.

It's coming (and sooner than LTE lol).

It is interesting you say it might be moved up because I called Sprint today to ask about the Galaxy Nexus, and they told me The Evo was launching at the end of the month... Very doubtful, but this is coming from a Sprint Store in South Florida, I called a few more, most were clueless... It may be released end of May maybe... but historically speaking... The Evo 4g came out on June 4th in 2010, so I anticipate the same time frame for thr Evo 4g LTE...

Does anyone remember when the FCC approved the 3VO? I just remember it took a long time for it to go through. Since the HTC EVO 4G LTE has passed FCC, could we see it released a little earlier than expected?

The original EVO 4G passed FCC early May. The EVO 3D passed through early June. Very, very interesting...

Well we already know the EVO isn't launching at the end of the month because pre-orders don't start till May 7th. Sprint store employees know no more than we do.

Just taking a wild guess, but these are my predictions for the 3 phones that have been formally announced:

LG Viper - 4/22 (already confirmed)
Galaxy Nexus - 4/29 (phone confirmed, but release hasn't)
LTEvo - 6/1 early release for folks with final Gold Premiere upgrade & 6/3 official release (Both dates put it out of the 30 day return window from when the Galaxy Nexus is 1st released).

That'd be my best guess, based on historical releases the past couple years. Each superphone was released more than 30 days after the previous superphone release.

Question Earlymon; When the FCC clears the phone, when could Sprint actually release the phone!? Without testing and debugging...

The Sprint return window is only 14 days now, this changed last fall as part of the end of the Premier program. I still suspect the phones to be at least a month apart, however.

Thanks, CC! I completely forgot that was also implemented after the gold/silver premiere was changed.

It may change their overall strategy, if they have more phones than normal that they'll be announcing. With the rumors of the Galaxy Note making its way to Sprint, maybe they're thinking of increasing the amount of superphones avaiable (much like Verizon). I guess we'll just have to wait and see how the summer and new releases play out.

I wonder how the "exchange/return" works if a person upgrades through a 3rd party. For instance, with Best Buy, I have Silver Rewards (thanks to Sprint upgrades :) . That said, the new Silver Rewards program at Best Buy also gives me a 60 day return window! That may give me long enough time to get the LTEvo on launch day, try it out for a couple months, and then exchange if Motorola and Sprint decide to release a new phone and I like it better (at least, I hope it can work like this).

It already cleared the FCC. Links were posted.

I know! It was a hypothetical question, meaning if Sprint did not test the phone for bugs and FCC cleared the phone and wanting to release the phone a.s.a.p to the market! How quick could they release it!? One day after FCC cleared it, two day's or is it mandatory after the FCC clears a phone you have to wait a minimum of 2wks!?

Sorry...completely mis-read your question. From what I've gathered on a quick google search, it's up to the manufacturer on the timeframe that they'd like to release the phone after FCC approval.

I tried that one out on an associate last year for the Evo 3D and she said it was still 30 days even though I had 45 and now 60 day best buy returns. I thought I could bide my time until the Photon and Galaxy S II released, but it didn't work out. Best Buy is more or less in a way working for Sprint and the other carriers, so I think they have to yield to Sprint's policies on stuff like that. You can purchase a phone anywhere, but Sprint in the end is still the service provider.

It is a great thought though, if we could just have that extended option it would make things too easy.

you can sell a device five minutes after FCC puts its stamp on it if you want to...

once its verified its verified, it either passed or it didn't

Very true. That being said, everyone should take a look at the documents. The phone was in testing as far back as on Jan. 22. We have very little way of determining the actual timeline for this stuff from on the outside. It will vary for every handset as well. There is no hard and fast rule.
