Root OG Droid owner here: What difference does a locked bootloader REALLY make?

My phone is on its last leg and I'm desperate for an upgrade and I feel like I've been waiting forever. I've been waiting for the nexus but the more time goes on I'm starting to be less sure of that choice and considering the rezound instead. The rezound looks like an awesome phone hardware wise and really the only downside seems to be this sense skin everyone complains about. My question is: how will having a "locked" bootloader impact my ability to remove this?

I've been running Cyanogen on my droid for almost a year now and I love the ability to flash new roms at will if I want. If I could replace sense with something like that then I think I would be more than content with this phone. Is this something that a locked bootloader will prevent? If I were to get a rezound, how would my experience rooting and modding be different than my previous unlocked vanilla experience?

With a locked bootloader you could still get Roms however you won't be able to flash different radios and kernals like is don'e so much on a lot of unlocked phones.

I came from a DX which has a locked bootloader. We had/have some really good ROMS available for that phone but it could really benefit from an unlocked bootloader.

basically it limits the Modding options for a phone that has a locked bootloader.
