If you pull down the notification bar, the notification sound/music will end . . . it's that simple. No need to shut down the phone.

Or you could flip it over on your hand it will silence the ringer and sent it to voice mail.

re how to silence, all good advice, but for me phone only rings when i'm standing in line with hands full.
no carry basket or cart, so if it does happen i just look around like everyone else

I use the "pebbles" sound that came stock on my incredible... it works for me.
