If I pick up another phone and activate it with my current number can I still use the droid for 3g wifi, navigation etc or must the phone be activated by verizon. You would think with all the time I spend here I would know this but, alas...

You can still use the wifi and your apps, but without a connection/data plan with Verizon the 3g will not work. The GPS should AFAIK but you will need an offline map saved to your SD card to use it. It will also still sync with your gmail account via wi-fi.

Be aware that the GPS function will take longer to return a fix, because it isn't being assisted by the tower triangulation provided by 3G access. As I understand, WiFi access will also speed up a GPS fix, but, for the life of me, I don't understand how.

Gotta say, I'm really tired of Gmaps telling me to connect to a wifi connection each time I open it. Seriously, who is connecting to wifi while they're driving and using directions?

BigRed/DeadNatty - I think the WiFi option for Google Maps is thinking a little bit into the future. Currently, there is a lot of public transportation that offer WiFi to their passengers. So if you are taking the bus to work and want to see how long it will take to get there, you can use Wifi. There are even some cars/vans that have WiFi in them so the whole family can connect while on long trips.

Rented a mini van for a drive to Florida last year and it came with WiFi so that the kids could use their iTouch.

i have 2 other phones that i play with and change the roms on... as has been said above, not having it activated just means you have no 3g data connections. whenever i start up a new rom on one of my inactive phones i can log into and sync with google to get my contacts,go to the market and get new apps, etc. all over wifi.

also, when i long into the online android market and click install,it will ask me wich device i want the app to go to

you can even make calls and send texts(tho not from your regular phone number) from wifi if you install the "texfree now, with voice" app :D
