Root ok how about a comparison

Ive had my dx for a mnth or so and came from a droid eris. I rooted it using the 1 click method and was familiar with doing nandroid backups, downloading roms to sd card using astro file manager and such. My thing is that I've got the itch to start fooling around with this phone but am having trouble forgetting the eris ways and making a clean switch to the rooting methods of the x. I've read about z4root and seems pretty similar to the eris 1 click method I used. I like being able to do everything from and with the phone. But that's about all I can relate to. I've read alot about sbfing and deodexing themes and am pretty lost. Where can I find a list of roms that I can use after using z4 and what apps will I need to navigate thru the phone once rooted. Can I stilll use astro file manager or will I have to use something else. Any help at all is greatly appricieated.

No need to deodex and Astro will work.

Just root with z4root, install bootstrap, create a nandroid. (I prefer using rom manager to manage my backups.)

Apex is a good first rom, but you might be ready for something a little more hardcore, like a AOSP (blurless) rom. I'm on Rubix Focused and like it.

Just make sure you install a rom that's compatible with your android version. You should be on .340.

I am on version. 340. How do I go about making a nandroid backup and should I do so before I root or after. Also how will I know if a rom im looking at is compatible with my version. I know im asking alot so I apologize but I feel like im starting from square one with this where as with my eris I really never had any problem other than trying to unroot which was pretty easy once I found a one click method. I think the whole "e fuse" deal with this phone has got me feeling like there's no room for screw ups.

You have to be rooted to create a recovery backup (nandroid). See this: http://androidforums.com/droid-x-al...ide-root-unroot-backup-rom-sbf-overclock.html

e-fuse? Don't worry about it. :D I only know of two people who really bricked their X's and they were rom devs. Search this forum for bricked and you'll find a lot of people that did something they later realized was stupid (like flashing a pre-320 sbf) and all they had to do was flash the correct one to fix it. This is one of the best forums for support, much better than your friendly neighborhood VZ store.

Your rom will say something similar to, "you must be running 2.3.340"... that'll be your clue. :D

I've flashed nearly every rom out there, only had to sbf once, then quickly restored a backup. I use rom manager to manage my backups, which look similar to this:

I was pretty sure you had to be rooted first to do a backup but wanted to double check. I totally agree with you about the help on this forum. If it weren't for you guys root would simply mean a part of a plant to me:D. I don't understand about the sbfing though because I don't have a computer and have never used one of the terminal emulators. Don't know anything about computer code! Yeah I know, noob to the third power, right?! Anyway I would certainly try it if I can understand what im supposed to do and how to use it:)
