Root OK, I rooted, now . . .

I was so frustrated with the redraw problems I was having, that I decided to root just to use a command prompt that someone created to solve it. Root and that fix worked fine. So, now I have a rooted phone and am wondering what to do next. (should not I used Soup or Root, a one-click process).

I got Barnacle and will try wifi tethering tonight at home with my daughter's iPad.

I am perfectly happy with Froyo and Launcherpro Plus, so what are the benefits to a custom rom? Is there any other cool tricks I can do other than flashing the rom?

Great, thanks, I will check out that tethering app instead of Barnacle. I did start to wade through that sticky, but there is so MUCH information, it is a bit overwhelming, so I was looking for where to start. What I really will focus on in that thread is what the benefits of these roms are, as compared to the stock Froyo.

Consider that Verizon wants you to have their watered-down version of Android, limited to what THEY want you to have... but with a custom ROM based on the Android Open-Source Project (AOSP) you get the FULL Android experience with nothing held back (subject to the device's hardware limitations). I hope that sorta kinda explains the benefit of a ROM...

Now that you're rooted, install a custom recovery like ClockworkMod Recovery and MAKE A BACKUP :)

I did get Titanium and did a backup first thing. I have also cleared my cache, moved some more apps over to SD, and installed that wifi app! I must say that the phone runs SO must faster now, and that alone was worth the root.

With the Droid, it seems to be pretty stock Android, and there is nothing I am really unhappy with, but I would like to get rid of the stock music player, which I am guessing I can do with RootExplorer. I will read up on the ROMs and see what they have to offer.

Backing up your programs and data with TiBackup is not what The_Chief is getting at. You need to make a backup of your entire phone.

I would suggest downloading ROM Manager from the market. You can use it to flash clockwork recovery. That will give you many more options for recovery if you do run into problems down the road. You can also use it to make that whole phone backup.

Even if you decide not to load a custom ROM, ROM Manager has many benefits that you can take advantage of.

I had reservations about using a custom ROM too after I rooted. After a short while, I took the plunge and used ROM manager to flash Cyanogenmod and then eventually now using PEv4.2 with Slayher's 1.1 ghz kernel. To echo what others have said, it is night and day compared to the stock ROM. The phone just feels so refreshed and super responsive and snappy. IMO, this is the way the phone should have come from the factory. I'm pretty sure once you use a custom ROM, you'll never want to go back to stock. ROM manager makes it super easy to switch ROMs.

I just rooted last weekend and didn't know about the wireless tethering Google option, so I downloaded Barnacle. My first test was with my iPad. It worked absolutely superbly.

Thanks, guys, I will get Rom Manager and make a full backup. Then I probably will test the waters with a new ROM.

I got Wireless Tether for Root Users from the Market and that also worked great. I still have Barnacle on my phone, so it is good to know that works as well.
