Help OK.. Keyboard Question

Handcent has a keyboard on one of its plugins or did I misunderstand?
Thanks for responding EarlyMon Evo 3d has a lot of steps to select something other than their stuff. Carrie answered it. I did download the keyboard, and selected it in the settings, but I didn't know I had to select it in the edit input screen. it came up in phone mode abc(even tho I have normal selected in the setting) Do you know how to switch to normal mode?

Also why can't the phone recognize this application and do a sync? It recognizes other messaging apps that I've used and gives me an option to sync to it. When I go to add an application to sync, it's not in the list. It doesn't let me browse?

Hmmm ... odd. There should be an "abc" button or something like that on the lower left that would toggle you back to the qwerty.
Hi Carrie, the star toggles to a numbers keypad and other signs only.

That's a new one on me - I'll have to check that out.

Needs a place to sync to and with.

Handcent has a premium service, maybe it lets you go there. Otherwise - MMS are saved by Sprint for a while, as I understand, but SMS are deleted from their servers when delivered.

I use SMS Backup, don't know if that's helpful.

OK - I downloaded it, I totally get it.

The Handcent is strictly a T9 keyboard - no qwerty. In the Handcent FAQ photo here for the keyboard - that's not showing two modes of that keyboard. That's showing that the stock Froyo Android (not HTC) keyboard will let you long-press "123?" to get to the keyboard selector. There is no return path from the Handcent keyboard (and that long-press 123# doesn't work on the HTC keyboard or SwiftKey, for example).

Hope that clarifies.

The Handcent keyboard looks like a nice bridge for those coming off of their T9 phone to a qwerty model.

It works very much like the second-gen Motorola RAZR T9 text input (the one that worked, not subsequent generations).

I'm sorry, but I miss those arrow keys. I'm finding it nearly impossible to put the cursor on the exact character I need, and really frustrating that I can't arrow it up or over one or two when that happens.

I'll try downloading SwiftKey to see if I like it better.

You know... just put your finger down on the text and slide to the point where you want to move the cursor.

It IS a gingerbread feature... and it's intention was to totally mitigate the need for a trackball/trackpad. I think it works fine for what it does. It's a little touchy, but I can live with it.

The problem with doing that is that while the sliding is going on I can't see where the cursor is because my finger is in the way. Perhaps on the tablet-sized screens Gingerbread was designed to help support, where the characters can be larger than a human finger, this would be useful, but on a phone it is utterly useless.

Wow... haven't seen that before. I use Handcent for my texting app but use SwiftKey for my kb. Usually in all of them there is a full qwerty toggle. This one has me stumped.
Hi Carrie, thanks for all of your help. I tried te Beta Swiftkey + keyboard, and loved it so I downloaded the published app last week. Great keyboard, told all of my friends.

Ok where is the keyboard from the original EVO the ones with the actual cursor keys?

Who ever thought of using this little tear drop BullSh* as a cursor must have little sissy boy hands or is a woman and needs to take a class on user interface design.

I have huge MANLY hands and this tear drop garbage is for the birds. Where can I find the original (better usability) keyboard?

You can get SwiftKey free at www.getjar.com. It is my preferred keyboard. It works very well with the predictive text. It has the arrow keys (which I agree was stupid to remove them), and different themes to make it look nicer. All in all, it is my favorite replacement keyboard. I had been about to pay for it when it showed up as the Amazon app of the day. Now that it is free on getjar, there isn't much reason not to get it.

Should I be concerned that Swiftkey collects my keystrokes that can include passwords?

Not really. The warning is just to remind you that you are using a third party program that could theoretically collect and send that info. If it didn't collect your keystrokes it couldn't really get any better with the predictive text. SwiftKey has been around for a while now, and people around here are pretty good at finding naughty Apps. :-)
