Help ok yall, im still using gingerbread

so, an update is available for my phone but i am sort of scared of change. it should be available because my sister tried to update her phone but it didnt work or take or something. i dont know. anyway, should i update it to the latest version which is ice cream or leave it on gingerbread?

i've been trying to see ice cream pictures, and it looks so..l futuristic lol
i like the way my home screen looks and the 4 buttons: phone, messaging, web, apps

do i want to change that?

and if i dont like it, will i be able to downgrade back to gingerbread?
and if i should change it, why?

thank ya kindly

If you like the way your phone works now there's no need to update to ICS. If you did you'd still have the same 4 buttons so updating wouldn't lose those. If you just want to change the look of your homescreen how about trying a Launcher app? you'd probably have to root your phone but that's not the same or as drastic as changing the ROM. I don't use custom ROMs myself because like you I like the way my phone works right now. When I do update the OS it is with Official Samsung authorized and offered updates. I only change the wallpapers and cases to get a new look to the phone.

You made a mistake in looking at pictures and thinking your phone will look like that. You are using a Samsung device, and when you update to ICS, the Samsung look will stay. The only difference you will probably notice is the rearrangement of the stuff inside the settings menu and some icon changes.

They don't need to root to use a Launcher app. That's the beauty of launchers. You can totally change the look without rooting. I've seen a couple launchers that have extra features when rooted, but that's it. Heck, you can even make your phone look and behave like Windows phone with Launcher 7 and Launcher 8.

1. like it has been said you do not need to accept the ota(over the air update)......so that is up to you if you want to or not. just keep in mind that there are other things that comes with ota's which are called firmware. firmware can be updates to your radios including 3g and 4g among other things that might imporve the performance of your phone.

2. and like it has been said pure android ICS will look different then what would appear on a samsung(if that is your phone) device. each manufacturer's usually add skins on top of the android os. samsung calls it touchwiz. (my phone is an htc evo 4g lte and htc has htc sense) on my phone with ics and now jellybean the features added where minor and mostly in settings that i know of and a few other details, but nothing significant.

3.and lastly no, you can't downgrade the phone once you to update it. the only way to do that is to root the phone and then you can flash whatever you want. there is probably some JB roms out by now for your phone, but i'm not sure.

hope this helps.

The trick I used to keep Froyo from upping to Gingerbread:

When the alert pops up, tap More Info.
Immediately yank the battery and count to something.
Replace the battery and start it up.

They will think you’ve responded to the alert, but they’ll miss that you never got it. Or words to that effect. You can do the upgrade anytime in Settings. I know that cuz I finally gave in and went Ginger.

not sure with you phone but i know with my htc evo you can go into settings/about phone/software update/uncheck the box for software update check. this way you can not accept the update and then it will not ask you again.

i'm not sure of this is just a HTC option or if it is on all android devices.

As I recall, Sprint gave me three choices about when to do the update: Now, Later and More Info. And choosing Later, of course, invites the pestering.

Updates are made for a better performance, optimization, etc. If there's an update available for your device — you should consider doing so.

However, if you feel comfortable with the Android version (gingerbread) you are currently using, then by all means...keep it. :)

P.s. It's always a good thing to read all available information on an uupdate before accepting it. ;)

well thank you all for the answers. really appreciate it. its not bothering me, so i think i'll stick with gingerbread

my sister tried to update her phone about 6 months after her update was available, but it didnt go through. i've had it this long, and im not too big on change (i know not much would happen except a change in icons which is what i really didnt want) so i'll just leave it alone

thanks yall :)
