Root Okay, I'm lost, need help flashing a ROM

PaxMan809

Newbie
I'm new to all of this so bear with me.

I want to flash Liquid Gingerbread 3.1, but I have never flashed a ROM before, and although I have searched, I have not found any really good tutorials for flashing a ROM (I probably failed to search properly, please point me in the right direction if this is the case).

Okay, for the next part, forgive me if my terminology is off on any of this or if I'm writing about irrelevant things.

My phone is running android 2.3.3 and is on the .605 Kernal, and I have root access.

Through my research I've learned that the first thing I need to do is make a nandroid backup, so I have downloaded Droid X Bootsrapper from the Android market. However when I click 'Bootsrap Recovery', it says 'successful', but then when I click 'Reboot Recovery', it gets stuck at a black screen after the 'M' on reboot.

Aside from that problem, I'm not sure how to actually go about flashing the new ROM without messing my phone up.

Any help on my Bootstrapper issue, or help on how to flash the ROM, or any links to tutorials would be much appreciated.

-Thanks

the bootstrap issue: uncheck usb debugging
If you were using droid2 bootstrap you wouldn't have to do that.

Installing a custom Gingergread ROM (This will work for 2nd-Init GB Kernel ROM's as well)
-Go to Settings -> Applications -> and check the box next to "Unknown Sources" and then press OK on the warning that comes up. (this allows you to install non-market 3rd party apps on your phone)
-Put Droid 2 Bootstrapper and the ROM.zip file that you want to install on the root of your SD Card (main SD CARD directory, not in a folder)
-Install Droid 2 Bootstrapper
-Open Droid 2 Bootstrapper and select "Bootstrap Recovery"
-It will request Superuser Permission, allow it and then select "Reboot Recovery"
-Phone will reboot, use your volume buttons to move up and down in the menus and the camera button to select. Back button will move you to the previous menu.
-Wipe data/cache (always do when installing a new ROM)
-Then select install from zip
-Select zip from sdcard
-Select the ROM zip that you downloaded and it will install (about 10 mins)
-Once you reboot into the ROM proceed to setup your phone as you want.

-Put Droid 2 Bootstrapper and the ROM.zip file that you want to install on the root of your SD Card (main SD CARD directory, not in a folder)

Okay, my question is how do I put bootsrapper onto my SD card. I downloaded it through the market, and can't find the path to see where I can move the program and the recovery file from the phone to my SD card.

edit: Also, when I go to flash the ROM, do I need to have USB debugging checked? edit again:

it is referring to if you downloaded the apk file of droid2bootstrap. You would put it on your sd card and install it from there. instead of downloading it from the market.

leave usb debugging unchecked unless your using Droid2 bootstrap.

I've downloaded the Droid 2 bootstrap from this link: Droid2Bootstrap.apk

I'm getting an error message when I try to install it from my SD card: "There is a problem parsing the package" when I try to install from a file maanager and "Could not open [the file]" when I try to install it from app manager.

I've tried it with USB debugging on and off, and have uninstalled the Droid X bootsrap from the phone so that there is no confusion.

edit: nevermind, I re-downloaded it to the SD card and it installed. Thanks again!

Okay, I tried that and tried installing the ROM, but I got an error that the install was aborted because the ROM was "(bad)".

Hmmmm.

Probably a bad download, erase the file and redownload the rom file and try again.

I've tried to 're-download' it, and have tried several other ROMs as well, all give me the same error message when I try to flash them.

I believe I am following your instructions to the letter, so what am I missing here?

Found something on youtube that says I should go into advanced settings and also wipe "Dalvik Cache". Should I do this?

edit: Tried that too, no luck.

the directions i gave you were a copy/paste from this link

What Rom are you trying to flash?

I have tried flashing:

LibertyX 3
Liquid Gingerbread v3.1
MIUI4DX 1.10.21 Defy Base
CM7

The error message I am getting is:

1.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
e:Can't open /sdcard/ROMname.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.

edit: and I have tried this with both Bootstrap and ROM manager, and I get the same error message.

You need to use the Install zip file from sd card option, not the install update.zip option.

I tried going through the process from the beginning again, and still no luck.

I am choosing the install .zip from SD car option --> choose zip from sdcard. I am not choosing the install update.zip option.

which CM7? there are two versions.

Are you sure you're currently on sys version .605 or .602 or below that?

Have you checked the MD5checksum for each rom you've downloaded to ensure your getting a good download?

Are you using a MAC by any chance?

I am using whatever CM7 version is listed and linked in the ***Official Droid X Theme & Rom List***

Followed the link to rootwiki and downloaded the 'current build' link... http://revnumbers.synik4l.net/CM4DX-GB-20111105.zip

.605

No, I'm not familiar with MD5checksum.

Are you using a MAC by any chance?

Nope, Windows7 PC.

Okay, I did a quick search and have downloaded MD5.

I have gotten a checksum value of 3605f0acdc2f4cf9afcb7821a8c475c9 for the Liquid Gingerbread 3.1 ROM I downloaded, what do I check that against?

every time you download a ROM it will have an MD5 posted with it usually. After you download it you compare that MD5 with the file that you downloaded to make sure its the same. If its not then you got a bad download. On Liquid's page for the DroidX link it has the MD5 or it

DROIDX
SIZE: 74.8 MB
CRC32: c6fc4ac5
MD5: 9e77c6df10bc97138a4ca536c00ee491

Something you may find useful in the future:

If you happen to use Firefox, the DownThemAll addon allows you to enter an MD5 hash string and it will automatically verify it while downloading the file.
