Help Old chestnut...Mediaserver battery drain

normcash

Newbie
My battery is once again being severely drained by the Mediaserver process. From fully charged to 1% in only 18 hours with almost nothing in the way of usage. I've been scouring the web to try to come up with a definitive solution for this problem, but I can't seem to find one.

This is the second time this has happened in recent weeks. On the first occasion, I uninstalled a lot of redundant software and did a forced stop on many other programs. I also used my AVG task killer to halt any other unused applications and processes. This seemed to work, so I tried it again this time. No luck. On checking my battery stats, Mediaserver is accounting for 71% of my usage.

I have no media on my phone other than photos (no music, no videos).

I have rebooted the phone several times with no luck.

I do not have an SD card mounted.

My firmware is up to date (4.3)

I have not downloaded any software prior to this issue flaring up again yesterday.

This is driving me mad!!

Does anyone have a simple definitive solution to this seemingly common issue?

Do you have music saved on Google Play Music Online? If so, have you somehow told the phone to sync Google Play Music with the Google server?

Just a shot in the dark...

BRG....Nope, I don't use any online services to store music.

Well, like I said, it was just a shot in the dark. Have you looked at your data usage to see if it is unusually high? If so, what app is consuming the data?

You could try going to Menu>Settings>More(tab)>Application Manager>All(tab) and look for anything with mediaserver in the name. Especially look through the com.*** stuff and see if there is something like that in there. If so, I would try clearing the cache and data(maybe) to see if that resolves it. I would have to think about data for a while before clearing it. I may start all over again.

I am honestly just grasping at straws, but nothing I have listed above will hurt anything. I guess it can't hurt.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

In the end, I transferred all my remaining media - photos only - from my phone to my PC, then deleted them from the phone. I then opened the phone in Safe Mode, and found that Mediaserver was STILL running. Aarrgghh!!

I thought I'd just give up for the night, powered the phone off, and put it on charge for an hour. When I went back to it and switch on, Mediaserver had stopped running.

I'm still no further forward in actually determining what was causing the problem, but I'm glad its stopped! That's twice this has cropped up in the past month or so, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

i had same problem about draining the battery by media server and my s5 got hot when using it in the web which it didnt happened before. i read some of your tips but didnt helped then i thought about when this started for me and what i did something unusual that day. That day i disabled some apps like google + photos app (sponsored by google ) and some other apps. And i decided to enable them and see if something comes to place and it really did happen. there was no media server at the top of the stats in battery usage and the phone didint get hot like before. When media server did problems 10 % went down just for half an hour. Now 10 % drives me an hour with screen on and browsing the web. I saved my life :)

Hey

thought I'd pop on to suggest a possible reason for this that I discovered yesterday

my battery drained from about 50% to dead within two hours of being at home due to mediaserver

I discovered a problem with my Internet provider while doing a speedtest, it was downloading fine but the upload was non-existent while connected to my WiFi. My IP had a known problem that they were fixing, I think it was killing the battery by constantly trying and failing to upload anything

I've been connected to the WiFi at work today and it's been fine

worth a shot
