Disclosure: I am virtually thoroughly ignorant of most tech jargon, acronyms, ROMs and such, but I'm not too old to learn, and I'm not stupid (though I do some stupid/ignorant things at times.)

I pooched my phone this morning, and now I can make/receive calls and access internet but most all of my apps are inaccessible, I have no access to the SD card and Titanium Backup Pro folder is empty (which I opened via my laptop)

LOVE the thread title for starters. :D

Ok so the big hangup here is the lack of sdcard access. I'm wondering if you are lacking access on a booted phone only, or also are you lacking /sdcard access while in recovery. Because that's really where you need to have access. If you can place a working rom onto the card via your card reader and then go into clockwork and simply wipe data/cache and dalvik cache (dalvik is in the advanced menu), that would be the easiest way out. Do you know for SURE you don't have access to the card while in recovery?

To test for access, place a rom on the card, boot to recovery. Start out by NOT wiping anything. Instead choose install zip from sdcard, choose zip, and see if you can see it there. If YES, go backward in the clockwork menu and do all the wipes I mentioned above, then flash (install) the rom. If you don't see the rom as an available flashable item on the sdcard, then we'll need to regroup.

Note: Depending on what you did here, you MAY have to do an additional step in this case which is to format /system. I wouldn't do that until/unless the wiping of data/cache/dalvik followed by the rom flash fails to yield a booting phone.

One other thought...did you ever make a nandroid backup from inside clockworkmod? And if so, did you try to restore the backup from clockwork? When I first read the thread, I thought that wasn't an option but I see you were referring to an empty Titanium folder which is different. This backup would be located at /sdcard/clockworkmod/backups if it were still there.

Thanks very much for your response, and astute insight. I was successful in wiping both and installing ROM from SD card. Rebooted and still no access to apps that are on SD card.

When I click Settings and Applications, and Manage Apps, under “Downloaded” it says “No applications” and at bottom of screen it reads Internal storage 100MB used 636MB free, when I click on “On SD card” it cites “No applications”, and bottom of screen: SD card storage 9.0GB used and 1.9GB free. (I’ve got a lot of music on it.)

Under "Running Apps" There are some accessible apps, but Google Services and Market are the green and white generic android icon (but they do open), as are all the apps on my homescreens, but they do nothing when clicked.

I didn’t see any Nandroid backup under recovery.

What do you think?

Thanks for your time and knowledge.

Much of that sounds normal but the above quote is what's slightly concerning. However it's possible you could be seeing some residual apps that just aren't really there anymore. This might be a result of not formatting /system (assuming you didn't), not sure. But IF everything else is working ok, and if you have all the essential apps for setup such as the play store, internet, etc...you might just want to try deleting those green/white apps on the homescreen and add your own apps there. You'll need to download your apps again if you don't have a titanium backup of user apps. Sorry but that's just a side effect of all this clean wiping stuff. That's also why it shows you have zero downloaded apps, because you don't yet. Those are either restored via Titanium Backup or you have to go to the Play Store and download them from scratch.

If that plan fails or you're missing crucial system apps etc, you might then benefit from trying to redo all this with the additional step of formatting /system (assuming you didn't do that last time).

Thanks. Just now having a few moments with internet access.

I DID NOT FORMAT. JUST WIPED data/cache and dalvik cache.

Back in April when I loaded cmlusco's Stock_inc_4.08.605.19_deodexed.zip I couldn't get any signal, and #228 did nothing, I thought I was screwing something up UNTIL... a friend texted me, and receipt of that text somehow made everything work. Remembering that, last night I stopped at a location with a landline, and called my phone. It was received and after that #228 worked, before the receipt of the call, #228 did nothing.

I've just read your response, so I'm going to eliminate the "ghost" icons from my screen and download apps again. The internet has been working, but VERY VERY slowly. Most of my contacts are missing, I think the ones that are still there are gmail/google associated contacts, but I think my Verizon ones are absent.

I'll have all day tomorrow to work on this, and I'll have internet access/laptop ready to do the best I can.

Is the best ROM for this Incredible still Cyanogen Mod 7?

Very grateful, again, for your attention and assistance. Thanks very much!

Yeah if possible, make sure all new contacts you add are of the Google variety. I think once you do that for the first time, it becomes the default contact type thereafter? Going off memory there, not sure. Newer Android versions don't really even mess with other contact types unless it's carrier added so contact loss isn't an option.

I'm sorry but I have ZERO idea what's currently the best rom option(s) for this phone. Hopefully another Inc stalwart can chime in on that.

Sounds like you may be up and running though which is good. Just take a good look around and make sure all is well before you commit to setting everything up. Hopefully, it'll be the last time you have to worry about it until your next phone. :)

I'm still "Grandfathered" with unlimited data on my Verizon account, so I guess that next phone will have to be one I buy on Craigslist or eBay to keep unltd. data.

Anyway, back to Current Crisis...The Bad News: I downloaded/installed some of my apps from the Play Store, but when accessed, most fail to open, and I get a “Sorry! The application _______ has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.” FORCE CLOSE.

The Good News:
My other phone contacts (non-Google types) re-appeared.

Any ideas on how to make the non-working apps function?

I think I'd try a superwipe. Where you use the format system option, then follow up with the usual wiping regimen and then flash the rom. Assuming you're still using cmlusco's rom because if CM, you'll need to install Gapps in recovery also. Must not be the case or you wouldn't have had access to the Play Store.

Before you try that though, convert all your contacts to Google contacts so that's not a hiccup moving forward. Then be sure to sync those contacts if you can, so they're safe in the cloud.

If I remember right, there's an option to export all contacts to a .csv file. If so, do that and move the resulting file to your PC. Then open Gmail > Contacts there and import that .csv file so you can do it in a batch process. If you have a lot of them that is. Going off memory there, hopefully not leading you astray with that process.

It's a drag not knowing what to expect when selecting functions within ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0

I selected "Clear Storage", and for the life of me, I don't know where I found that option. But, it did clear all the apps I'd downloaded recently.

The Superwipe is performed how? Do I chose wipe data/factory reset? I thought that was last option when all else failed. And I thought I'd lose Root.

Under Settings/SD & Phone Storage Do I "Format Phone Storage"?

No, boot into clockwork recovery and go to mounts & storage. Choose the option to format system.

Then after that, perform all the other wipes you've already been doing and install the rom.

Got it. Thanks.

On the topic of Wipes...

Did you ever hear the joke about the squirrel that was taking a crap on a log early one morning? Anyway, he was doing his bodily function when a bear lumbered by, saw the squirrel and asked him if he'd mind if he joined him on the log to take a dump. The squirrel replied that he didn't mind, so the bear joined him on the log. The bear performed his bodily function, then asked the squirrel if he had problems with crap sticking to his fur. The squirrel replied that he didn't, so the bear picked him up and wiped his ass with him...

Some days I feel like the bear, and others like the squirrel. With regards to my ignorance about the tech intricasies of smartphones, I most certainly feel like the squirrel, and afraid how to answer simple questions asked by the phone...

Back to task at hand. I did the "format system" option which was successful, but now phone won't boot-up normally. Seems to be stuck after a portion of the process happened. The screen is stopped (maybe 5 min.) on htc Incredible. Wait longer or pull battery? Power switch does nada.

Lol.

Ok but you did ALL those steps back to back before rebooting right? Format system, then all wipes, then installed the rom, then rebooted the phone?

No. Formatted system. Tried to restart phone to ascertain what apps etc were left. Haven't done wipes/install.

Ah my fault, I should have been more clear. It won't boot now so pull the battery, then replace. Go back to recovery using volume down + power. Since you've already done the format system, you can now just wipe data, cache, dalvik and then proceed to install the rom...all back to back to back. Once done, then reboot to system from recovery.

Sorry. Under Recovery do I select "wipe data/factory reset", or under mount/system "format system"???

Wipe data (factory reset), wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, install zip from sdcard, choose zip from sdcard, find your rom and select to flash. Reboot after all those steps.

"Stranger than Fiction..."

After following your kind instructions successfully, I had someone attempt to call me. Multiple attempts all resulted in the caller receiving ~ "Call cannot be connected as dialed." I could make outgoing calls, but not receive. I called Verizon tech, described the problem and their tech said they found that ~ a switch there had been set to disable my receiving of calls. They switched it back to enable my receiving calls and mentioned that they had no idea how it could have been disabled...???

The phone is functional, but quirky. It'll turn off intermittently and it went into a boot-loop yesterday at a bad time, and I kept hearing "Droid...Droid...Droid", I'm glad no one heard what I was saying!

I think I'll try flashing CM7 and hope it offers better/more reliable functionality.

Thank you again, very much, for your kind helpfulness and tech expertise.

I haven't looked for instructions on flashing CM7 yet. Any advice on where to find instructions?

Anyway, thanks and all the best to you.
