Help Older photos

Can I add older photos from previous phones into the DCIM folder?
When I upgraded I transferred photos from last phone successfully.

I would like to add others, from older phones, and these may have same filenames? Will phone system distinguish between them due to date etc or not?
I currently have them in a folder on SD card, and are viewed in gallery.

Yes you can. No need to place them in the DCIM folder, there is a Pictures folder already present on your device.

Am I paraphrasing correctly, "How to consolidate photos from many folders to other existing folders?" If not, I still have that question. (Stock not rooted phone.)

I have my old pics in a folder called "old pics". The phone automatically finds them. No need to add to the DCIM folder.
