Oldest boy wants to program

Android Expert
So my 13 yo wants to program and he found himself some book about Android Application programming. He has now created his first app. It's really simple and no frills. All it does is open up and have a screen that says "I love you Mom and Dad." Really, nothing to it, but I'm really proud of him for getting that up and running. He's been working at it for a couple of days, and it's a start. Pretty soon he'll be doing more and more.

I have no interest in app programming; I'm a hardware guy (I repair mid-range AIX RISC servers for IBM). But my son has been wanting to try to learn programming for a while now. I plan on encouraging him to continue learning.

That's how it all starts.
For many "Hello World" echo/print
Strings turned into something big after a few years and hard work.
I'm glad you are supportive.

Wow! That's awesome. Definitely encourage him to continue - too many kids stall out too quickly when learning to code for the first time, only to never return.

I'm surprised that he managed to pick up the basics of both Java (a relatively complex language), as well as the fairly-extensive Android API in such a short space of time. Has he done anything in other, perhaps simpler languages (e.g. Python or BASIC)? Because if not, that's incredibly impressive as a first-time achievement.

Excellent! Programming is not only a potentially fun and rewarding career path/hobby, but it is also a great way to develop the human brain and enable logical and rational thinking. Bravo to your kid. =)

Thanks everyone. He is pretty bright when it comes to phones and to a lesser degree computers. He still doesn't beat his old man when it comes to pc's. :-)

No, he hasn't done any basic. He has done some html coding though. He using something called eclipse. I don't know anything about it, myself.

Where can I find books or websites on Android programming. I want to start basic programming too . I'm a freshman in college.
