Olympus vs Captivate.. my plan.

Well the reason I mention the bugs is because, as much as everyone loves to be unhappy about the captivate.

The devs managed to fix the major issues.

Just imagine if they COULDN'T.

What if the atrix has a problem that is easily fixed but, we are spending the next 6 months trying to just figure out how to root it.

I am not saying no one would try.. but, as much as they have invested in that phone.. if they want it locked.. I have a feeling they will have invested some hefty cash in R&D on how to keep it that way.

And in some ways I can see why motorola would WANT it locked.. I mean its their most powerful device yet, so I am sure they want to maintain every bit of power they can.

Honestly, it seems like you are trying to justify a reason to purchase a Captivate now. If you do not wish to wait for something new and would prefer this, go and get the Captivate as it seems like you want it.

I want an android phone.

Not captivate not atrix.

The only question is what is the best choice.

If you have some sort of inside sources to validate a release date and intense 4 hour test over the course of 2 year life span for this phone.

Feel free to let me know that its 100% legit and worth waiting for.

otherwise there is valid reason to be suspicious and seriously consider pro's and con's both ways.

Here is the reality there is no best choice because a phone will always come out that is better. you have to ask yourself what is best for me. for instance the HTC inspire and Atrix are two totally different phones I can probably be happy with the Inspire alot of people i know who have the DESIRE HD which the inspire is love it and I always wanted it. No the atrix temps me with all the goodies but in the end I might just get the Inspire and try it out just to see which is the better fit.

To bad you can't just pick up the desire free.. with contract.

Oh well.. I'd still settle on original desire.. closest thing to N1..

yea so why dont you get the N1? I mean its still available and my friend has it still loves it.

Yeah, find a N1 with AT&T 3G bands. That was one of my favorite phones and I almost purchased it with the T-Mobile bands and again with the AT&T bands but decided to wait (might have been due to the release of the iPad. Don't really remember why I didn't purchase it.).

Screen burn-in, non-multi touch, unreadable in sunlight, fiddly capacitive buttons ... At least that's what I keep saying to console myself.

There are no guarantees in life but the Inspire seems to be a safe, if a bit unexciting, bet since it's basically a Desire HD which has been out for a while.

And most of those were addressed in updates. I still think that I will end up getting the Atrix because it will be more future proof but I will miss sense.

I am not getting the N1 because, as I have said before.. I am not paying 600 $ for a used phone :/

I don't care if they fixed those issues with updates.. the fact is I can't get it new and for all I know the one I end up paying lots of money for is going to be in horrible condition.

I am within a few hours going to be a captivate user if I am lucky.

Also.. buzo.. Again I am not trying to just sit here and bash a new phone without ground.

But, I think the hardware is more future proof.. but, that doesn't mean the software is going to be.

I really doubt they are going to carry updates and support for atrix any longer than any other phone out there :/

While it is always nice to get the latest updates and have the most powerful device..

I really am of the mindset as long as the phone works for 2 years.. i don 't care anymore.

If it does what I want and need.. then fine, I will keep it two years and maybe more.

However, we have also reached a point.. what else can really be done on phones in terms of apps and programs to run?

unless you want mobile gaming or really plan on seriously using the dock and desktop features..

I don't even think the atrix is as powerful as it is for the sake of being a phone..

I think now it has 1gb of ram to be a computer. dual core to function as a make shift all in one computing device.

For the first time, I really think it is more of a computer than a phone.

I don't need another computer.

a want a phone with computer qualities. Not another laptop.

Anyway. I also have school to think about.

Getting captivate now means by the 18th I'll know if the battery is gunna last.

I'll know if it has any major defects.

When school starts back up.. I go from 7 till 4 some days.. if I have to bring a charger for capt so be it.. but, i really can't afford to be without a phone if something happens with atrix.

it would be nice to join you guys in optimism.. but, realism is also an issue.

I am being realistic. I know the Captivate and other Galaxy S phones and I am not a fan. I know the Atrix has an enormous battery and how much power phones use. Therefore, I have a general estimate of how well the battery will be. I have to go travel back to school again soon too but I am not worried about having problems with my device because there is always a way to get it fixed.

If you have and have been using an android phone then you probably can estimate battery life.

However, I have not had one and like it or not.. there is a lot of solutions already available for the problems which are already known.

I wish you the best of luck with the atrix. I am hoping all of my negativity is incorrect on a large level.

However, I have school 4 days a week so if the phone breaks on a monday, thats 3 days until I can really do anything about it.. I want a solid week to make sure things are functioning properly.

If atrix comes out.. I may fold and hop over.

Good luck.

Thank you but, again, I just see your negativity has a way to justify your purchase now. You should enjoy your phone. I know if I have a problem that it will be a hassle to go out and get it fixed but I would rather deal with that personally, than the alternative.

My justification for the captivate is it can do what I need it to and I can get it now.

Even if I get the atrix, my negativity is still going to be there because, I don't want to get hit unsuspected.

The fact that I would get it now shows some level of trust in the company.. I still don't want to raise my hopes excessively though.

There are no indications that there is anything wrong with it yet you keep saying all the things that could be wrong with any new device. It is just unnecessary. You might as well say that since it has a battery, it might explode so you should wait and see if they explode or not. It is all unnecessary. A real argument would be why are there GPS issues with the Captivate? Also, you keep going back to "getting your hopes up" yet you are getting the Captivate? That's fine and I am sure you will be happy with it. The way you are responding, though, just instills unnecessary negativity about a phone that has yet to be released while promoting a phone that you are going to get that has confirmed issues. I am not saying don't get it. I am just saying that your constant bashing of an unreleased phone is unnecessary.

Fairs fair if it bothers you that much I will stop.

And I keep going back to "getting my hopes up" because, I will be blunt.

Look at the captivate and how many issues it has had.

Its still at&t's flagship phone.

Part of the problem can be placed on samsung but, I think it is a statement about at&t and androids relation. You have pointed out on multiple occasions at&t does have to change its tune, or die. While I agree with that premise.. there hasn't been an overwhelmingly successful sure fire android launch yet.

I keep telling myself its worth the wait.. the truth is it is just as much of a gamble.

Either way I'm done with it in this thread. I may continue the "what might at&t do to this phone" thread because, like it or not.. at&t has a bad habit.

This thread and others I'm done with though in terms of negativity.

I do agree AT&T had a bad past but you can't say they will not change. If they don't, well AT&T will have more problems than aggravated Android fans. I do hope that you enjoy your Captivate. With the plans that you have in store for it, it sounds like you will enjoy it greatly.

Its not that I don't believe people or companies can't change.. Its more I believe they actually have to want to.

Sure iphone going to verizon is a good incentive to.

Sure these upcoming releases are a great chance to make some peace with android.

But, change does take time.. it takes reassessing the situation, and then making an effort.

Usually the first efforts fall short.. but, you continue to try and you keep getting better.

I view the android adoption originally as a way of humoring those who wanted it.

I view the galaxy s and aria as a way of saying they were options.

I feel like the upcoming phones are their first "real effort".

As far as captivate goes.

To be honest.. part of the reason I'm settling is because, I am no longer impressed with certain things in phones..

While I am ready to run through the list and fix the lag and other issues.

I am mostly looking forward to swype and widgets.

Its amazing how much I hate widgets on the computer. Waste of ram and clock cycles, and usually no real benefit.

On a phone the ability to have all the information I want right there when I wake up in the morning means, no gambling on the day.

I'm too lazy to turn on my desktop, check weather, check email, browse around and do x y and z.

I can wake up in the morning.. see if I need a jacket, umbrella.. check and make sure I have everything I need for school and be gone all in under 5 minutes.. no temptation to goof around on the web.

I can check email and eat breakfast at the same time

yes the 90 million triangles a second will be nice and it does have some great hardware....

However, my thumbs not hurting after a long text will be priceless.

I also hate waiting 5 minutes to delete all 500 text and running out of space more or less every day or two.

If I still had my e71x, I probably wouldn't care as much.. or I'd at least be willing to wait..

but, android lured me in with the small things.

I was willing to pay full price for at&t 3g banded n1.. thats not an option and now I don't have the money.

Later on I was willing to pay full price for aria (when I found it for 300$ new). And despite very weak hardware, it still seems to have features I want.

Now. I don't know why but, the captivate is an option. its got sufficient hardware and suitable fixes. I just hope my parents don't change their mind again before the store gets one in :(

Listen if you get a good captivate unit none of those problems will even exist. Mine was flawless

Again, your reasons versus mine. I want the latest and greatest because all those widgets take up cycles and, with more processing power, the Atrix's processor will be less taxed and will have better battery life. If you can get a good Captivate, you should be fine. I just find it odd that you have waited all this time for a good phone to be released and then you decide to settle for something that has been around. On another note, I can't help but say your forum posts remind me of poem structure, which is odd. Just thought I would throw that last one out there...

I have a friend with the fascinate and she loves it to death.

I have another friend with the captivate and I've been meaning to ask if he rooted it but, he has had no problems.

Talking to a guy in the comp sci department who has it.. I generally really respect his thoughts and opinions.. seems like a pretty logical guy.

His biggest statements were just keep in mind its not iphone if you have used iphone.

Actually.. I have found it funny there is so many complaints online but, I have not heard a single complaint from anyone I've met in person.

With all that said, I've got pages bookmarked so if I get any signs of trouble it will be rooted and fixed asap.

If rooting doesn't fix it or I for some reason get unhappy with it, I will just bring it back.

Unfortunately they didn't have any in stock today :( the lady claimed they should get a truck by 4:30.. I called around 3:30 and they didn't get any in... she never called back.

I have already waited a week on this phone.. I hate not knowing when they will get some in..

I am also hesitant to go anywhere else because, she called it in and pushed the upgrade through.. so I don't know if any other at&t stores would be willing to do that..

That's why I ended up getting the Nexus after I bricked my captivate (oops :) ) lol I swapped it but they never got any in so u got this nexus

less taxed =/= better battery life. However, if the claims are true (11 hours wifi) its pretty impressive.

If you can get a good Captivate, you should be fine. I just find it odd that you have waited all this time for a good phone to be released and then you decide to settle for something that has been around.
In 2008 I got a nokia e71x before at&t require data plans.

I loved the phone. Sometime after christmas it got washed in a freak accident.

A friend gave me the samsung impression she got off ebay, it eventually died.

The neon was on sale so I managed to get it half off about 3 or 4 months ago.

I use to sell cell phones on tmo, att, and sprint. I have been following android for a while and I have wanted it for a while but, I have not had an upgrade.

I find myself not texting nearly as much just because my keyboard bugs my thumbs.. its pretty god awful.

Back around the beginning of 2010, I was gunna buy a nexus one.. but, my parents refused to pay or let me pay the 10$ media net fee you could use with at&t at the time..

Well... 8 months later my step dad upgrades to a crappy blackberry.. (no 3g, blu tooth or wifi) and pays 9$ for it.. USING THE PRIMARY LINE!

So sometime later my mom gets iphone 4.

My step dad turns around and pays full price for his iphone 4.

He could have gotten a captivate free since he is on the primary line.. so.. 500$ he lost in a wasted upgrade.. and then 600$ he spent on the full priced iphone 4.

So here we are maybe 4 months after all of that.. and my parents are finally considering letting me get a data plan because, being totally honest.. all of the feature phones are worse than the impression I had that was 3rd hand :/

Now that they are giving the ok.. I want the phone as soon as possible because, I don't want to risk for one second them changing their minds.

But, even outside of that.. if you have a phone you can live with now.. thats cool. However, I don't. 3 weeks ago I got the samsung flight II and brought it back because, it had worse battery life than people are getting with any smartphone I've read over.. And there are mixed reports on battery life but, I just didn't want to deal with it.

So, I was ready to settle on a lot less than the captivate.. especially because I loved the keyboard.

Whether my parents believe it or not.. I don't want another toy for gaming... I really legit want a smart phone for the sake of managing time/information.

I totally understand why you have trouble comprehending my inability to wait.. but, even now... I am worried that because the at&t store didn't have on in stock.. my parents still have a chance to change their mind on the whole ordeal.

And well.. I hate to say this.. because I'm not trying to be negative on the phone.. but, I don't have a solid release data.. "in the coming weeks" could still mean end of February.. who knows, there may even be a shortage on the phone.. that mean even if it releases mid feb I don't get it till mid march. Well what if sometime between here and there my parents change their mind?

Hell one time my step father said flat out I could have the blackberry and they would worry about data plan later. So at the mall that day I was looking at the captivate and called him and ask "well why not pay the plan on a phone I want if I pay for the phone" he turned around and claimed he never said I could have the blackberry or a data plan.

And well to be honest.. if I still had my e71x I could tough it out I think. If I knew my parents weren't goin to change their mind.. or I had a solid release date I think I could manage.

I would just get my own plan but, then my parents would pull some sort of "if you can afford that phone you can afford to pay us rent" crap..

Whether or not the atrix has a flawless release.. I at least know the captivate has problems, I know how to fix them.

I also will (hopefully) have it broken in by the time school starts..

Whats the fun in waiting for the atrix if I'm too busy to enjoy it?

Plus being totally honest.. although the atrix hardware is far more impressive.. its designed to be a makeshift computer.

I think the captivate is close enough to current hardware and hardware that will be released to survive quite a while.

I also don't want 4.3 or 4.5 inch screen.

I am not picky and don't need something super tiny but, I personally feel 4" is a pretty good size..
On another note, I can't help but say your forum posts remind me of poem structure, which is odd. Just thought I would throw that last one out there...

I'll take that as a compliment I suppose XD

@andrea

Part of why I'm not going hesitate to root is because if I really brick it.. they will have to unbrick it to find out its rooted.

Meaning it will work again.

If they can't get it working again, they don't know it was rooted.. therefore I get a new phone anyway ;D

In other news, I think its time I play more borderlands.

I get where you are coming from. I don't have a problem with you getting a Captivate at all. It is your decision. I am just saying it seems as though you are putting down the Atrix and the other phones for no reason. I mean, they have been announced for just days now.
