Omg look what it runs!!!!!

Maybe for video and speed and the ability to have a phone that won't be obselete in 6 months etc

Enjoy the atrix being outdated in 6 months :/

At&t has already stated that this phone isn't running "true" 4g :(

And after mid year they will start releasing LTE phones...

I wonder if "Iphone 4GS" is gunna be first LTE phone.. if anything from 3g to 3gs.. they could just put it at 1 ghz instead of 800 mhz and add LTE and call it a day.

Anyway... the ONLY phone thats not going to be "outdated" is the nexus series..

And I hate to say this ... but, what is the big deal about phones being outdated?

You menitoned speed.. I have a quad core desktop and I assure you I take GOOD care of it.

Phone's still load faster depending on who has a better connection at the time.

I understand wanting the best tech you can get.. but, "outdated" can be looked at multiple ways.

Your nexus s has inferior hardware..

but, it is going to receive updates way longer than the Atrix can even dream of...

Tech world.. 6 months is how long you have the best then a year and a half before you start to feel its age..

Edit... also for reference..

  • Obsolescence is the state of being which occurs when an object, service or practice is no longer wanted even though it may still be in good working order. Obsolescence frequently occurs because a replacement has become available that is superior in one or more aspects.

Lately.. I've been wondering.. who really cares if newer better hardware is out if what you have works fine and isn't causing problems?

Just because LTE arrives doesn't mean that the atrix will be outdated. LTE won't be fully available for at least a year. So as long as the hardware specs aren't improved or bested by another phone the LTE won't outdate the atrix

Eh.. if we are going to worry about things being "outdated" I think we really need to say in what context.

My brothers Q6600 in is desktop is "antique" its a DINOSAUR.

it might not benchmark as high as an I7

But, damnit, it runs with the best of them, and provides +60 fps at 1080p on anything out there!

Just because phones are old and no longer fashionable doesn't mean they aren't adequate hardware.

You are also still unsure where the ball is going to fall with updates and how long it will be valid in that circle.. which is equally important with hardware IMHO.

In the end you will get what is best for you at the time and just roll with the punches

My only point here..

is you have nexus s

and there is a big chance that the atrix will stop receiving updates before that nexus S does..

even though the atrix will still have better hardware.

Yes and if the nexus had 3G on att I probably would keep it
If the Nexus S was on at&t, it would not get any upgrades either. The Captivate has not received the 2.2 upgrade even though the other variations of the Galaxy S has.

Not to mention the Xperia has had the 2.1 upgrade all over the world literally including Canada and Mexico, and not a peep out of at&t.

Just venting. :D

Att nor any other carrier has any control over the Nexus the updates are directly from Google

yeah 25$ a month for edge data is pretty horrible.

Despite the epicness of dual core..

having a nexus device would be a dream.

How can it be outdated considering all the 1GHz phones from last year are still being sold as top tier phones this year? Software may be an issue but, like said earlier here, the only phones with a good software update record is the Nexus series. As to 4G LTE, that is something I would wait on. Right now, the two main cities I reside in have LTE for Verizon and will probably be the first for AT&T. The problem is is that I can expect an increase to about $40 a month for a data plan which is not very tempting. Anyways, I do not need LTE when I am in the heart of the city but more when I am traveling around them and LTE will not be there. At least HSPA+ will be there though.

Exactly. You have echoed my sentiments exactly

I didn't literally mean it would.

I was more being sarcastic about the fact that people are acting like this phone is going to be magically different with updates.

Odds are if it does ship 2.2 it may go 2.3 and like every other phone out there... it will probably get dropped..

Or they may wait and jump it to 2.4 but, the fact is I really doubt its going to get longer support than any other phone.

I only pointed out LTE because, It is on the horizon as well.. and lets faceit.. people are obsessed with numbers. "4g" is going to be all the rage.

I will say this with Android unless you have a nexus phone don't EXPECT any updates. Get the phone for what it is and if you like it enjoy it for a year or two. No OS updates are guarenteed except for Nexus that's why the Nexus exists for developers. To this day I don't understand how the android army hasn't understood this. You can't buy an android device on what updates it might or might not get because that's a variable that will never be a given

Updates are not guaranteed but one will most likely get 2.3 or 2.4 Gingerbread on the Atrix eventually.

The argument with 4G is people are obsessed with numbers but that's what AT&T is marketing this phone as. The average consumer will think this is a 4G phone when it is just HSPA+.

Yes that is true. My response though was to the fact that even if an lte phone comes out in 6 months unless it has more impressive specs the atrix won't be outdated even if it doesn't get the software updates. Unlike the other two that are being released with the atrix in 6 months they will be yesterdays news, there almost yesterday's news noe

Yep. I just keep finding myself reiterating this to some users as it seems that they are trying to justify themselves purchasing an out-of-date phone now, which is fine but they continue to come up with issues, often non-existent, which can lead others astray.

Yes exactly. Just purchase the best phone that suits your needs and that you yourself won't out grow.

Don't confuse made up issues with misplaced concern.

so this isn't the xbox 360 which crashed and burned.

This isn't the nexus one which had screen burn in.

This isn't fermi which showed up 6 months late, and incredibly hot in an unsexy way and drawing more power than the average mother board is spec'd to handle.

This also isn't the iphone 4 with the antenna gate scandal.

This isn't windows vista either which was just horrible in terms of resources upon release all around.

Oh its also not the motorola backflip.

Am I a bit off in my concerns?

Absolutely. Perhaps I am worrying about the wrong issues.

But, the fact is products with high expectations come out flawed all the time.

Just because I am probably wrong about this one does not mean there isn't valid concern.

Just because I am willing to gamble, and you gentlemen are respectively willing to gamble.

Does not mean it is leading people astray to point out that products which are pushes forward.. Even if they are a natural and logical push forward..

Are usually the ones most likely to have problems.

I completely respect the fact that you are probably right and I am probably overly concerned.

This wouldn't be the first major release to have an unforseen problem though :/

And if you guys think i'm cynical on phones... you should have seen me when I was building my computer.

haha! i usually dont worry too much about having problems with things. i bout my nexus s and when everyone was having all these problems, i tried to replicate them but couldnt. so i say just dont worry about it, and if something goes wrong, exchange the phone for a working one.
