On the topic of the screen

Ever since they announced that the Atrix would be holding a qHD 24 bit display, I have wondered if perhaps a high battery draw from it would be the reason for building in such a large battery. I did some searching on wiki to see if I could find out any more information about what kind of display the Atrix uses and if battery is going to be an issue.

I found unconfirmed reports that the Atrix display is going to use a PenTile RGBW LCD display. At first I was worried about this because I don't particularly like the PenTile RGBG amoled display on my nexus as I find that that text doesn't look as sharp as I would like. Reading more into it though I found that there is a significant difference between PenTile RGBG and PenTile RGBW matrices. I'll quote the wiki article for better explanation on why RGBW is actually pretty great:

PenTile RGBW technology adds a white subpixel to the traditional red, blue, and green subpixels in a color display allowing a brighter display using less power. ... When the image is mostly desaturated colors, those near white or grey, the backlight brightness is significantly reduced, often to less than 50% peak, while the Liquid Crystal Display levels are increased to compensate. When the image has very bright saturated colors, the backlight brightness is maintained at higher levels. Since most natural images and black on white text have few simultaneously bright and saturated colors, the average power of the PenTile RGBW panel is 50% less than a conventional RGB LCD. Since the LCD backlight is the major power using component on many portable devices ... products that use the PenTile RGBW panel have appreciably longer battery life. The PenTile RGBW also has an optional high brightness mode that doubles the brightness of the desaturated color image areas, such as black&white text, for improved outdoor view-ability.

This is good news for Atrix fans because it means that the battery may actually last a good long time on this device. It also means that this type of PenTile matrix won't suffer from the same sharpness problems that the Nexus One had. (even though the nexus used amoled and this is lcd, the type of matrix is still a major factor here) And hopefully it will still have pretty good readability in sunlight.

Excellent research youareme7 - thanks for that bit of news! You may want to consider submitting that to phandroid; atrix is pretty hot, and that's exciting news for those who are planning on getting the Atrix.

I don't know too much about screen tech - just the pros and cons of the different technologies - but I would GUESS that the size of the screen has a much bigger impact on battery draw than the resolution, although it does seem logical that a higher resolution could also draw extra battery. So if this hypothesis is right, combined with your research findings, it seems like the display won't be much more of a battery hug than comparable screens, and possibly even less - cool!

BTW, my guess for that huge battery is 1. Moto knows it will garner good praise from critics 2. Motoblur will probably be pretty intense on this phone, and all the updates and synching to various websites and social media and mail, etc, will probably drain battery pretty significantly, especially if you have a lot of motoblur widgets running, which is how I imagine it will come preloaded. This doesn't worry me though, because if motoblur is eating too much battery, then I can always delete widgets and/or turn of data synching when it isn't needed.

Wow...great find. One of the things I dont like about Amoled screens is the Pentile Matrix.

Thanks for the info.

I used it and the screen was very sharp to me, even when zoomed in. The only thing that concerned me was the colours seemed a bit "washed out".

I can kind of see that washing out in the videos, it worries me a little. But I really can't wait to get this phone in hand to see it though...

I am glad to hear about the sharpness though, that is a huge complaint of mine when reading text on my Craptivate...

I would assume that the brightness could be adjusted for each user. As for the "color" of the screen. I like cell phones to be sharp with good resolution - but I do not want that amoled look of the galaxcy phones - they seem over saturated to me. From what I have seen on line in pictures and videos the Atrix looks to be a good balance.

I can't wait to get one.

In light of the Anadtech Review is this information still true?

Is it RGBW or RGRB?

It is RGBW pentile matrix. Unfortunately it is seeming like it still suffers the same problems that RGRB pentile displays have with the "screen door" effect. I guess I had hoped that the higher pixel density would diminish the problem to where it wouldn't be noticeable but reviewers seem to be saying otherwise. I'll have to see one in person but it's something that really bugs me about my Nexus One. One more reason I'm slowly leaning towards galaxy s 2 (or maybe htc will bring something great tomorrow, who knows)

wouldn't hold my breath on HTC, although Samsung totally surprised me with having their chipset ready.
i'm hoping HTC does surprise...

edit: and no surprises from them. kinda disappointed. i guess heres hoping they bring it at CTIA at the end of March.
