Root One click root

What file should what be under?

If you downloaded via email they should be on the sdcard under messaging.
Move them to the top level of the SD card.

In your app drawer you should see an app called files.

For X, but applies to D2 as well as far as I can tell...there's a spreadsheet attached in the thread a page or few in that lists all the apps and yes/no remove.

I'd recommend you rename rather than remove, or use Titanium backup to freeze the app.

Also, ALWAYS do a nandroid backup before making any changes, and ensure you know how to boot into Clockwork Recovery and confirm that it's working.

What happens if you screw it up but the device still boots? Can you just do a factory reset and start from scratch?
 
As I said, do a nandroid backup...then you can boot into recovery and restore your working backup.

If you can't even get it to boot, then you have to do an SBF...

Factory Reset will not affect SW, only your market apps and data, so won't fix a problem w/the ROM.

However, doinga factory reset often fixes issues that can arise when you install a new ROM, so it's a good troubleshooting tactic.

I'm not removing anything or renaming anything, the extra software doesn't bother me. I was just curious to know if a factory reset would put "everything" back.

The only thing that can put everything back (completely unroot you, restore all the stock software) is using the D2 SBF file to restore the phone to stock.

You use RSD Lite to do that...

Google Droid 2 SBF...
 
Only issues I had rooting my phone was the SU and Busybox programs had a different name on it that would not let it load. Once I changed there names it worked like a charm.

What do I need to do next in order to do a Nand Backup and Flash a new ROM?

Download Droid 2 Bootstrapper from the market and follow the steps here.
 
And these steps to launch CW Recovery if you need to launch it from power up, rather than from the bootstrap program or ROM Manager:

Turn D2 off
Start booting D2
Pull the battery when the boot animation appears (after M logo goes away)
Put battery back in
Turn D2 on
 
One of the one click developers, Unstable Apps who made EasyRoot, has basically said that it is not going to happen any time soon. They seem to have plugged the hole that allowed 1 click root. The manual process really isnt that bad. Its worth a go.
