Did you guys root your nexus 4? If so why, and what's the easiest way to root it? Is there a one click root? I'm not that great with rooting so i'm trying to find the easiest way possible to root if it's worth it?
 
Hey (again) rooting is great and as you've got yourself a Nexus it's easy! Main reasons I rooted were to install a custom recovery to make full backups of your ROM and Titanium Backup for app backups. Also there's installing custom ROMS, I was hoping to stick with stock for a while but caved recently and flashed my first custom ROM for the Nexus 4 :D

Check out the All Things Root section, there is a very easy way to root etc using the All In One Nexus Toolkit over on XDA.
 
The one I found over around XDA and used was by {{WugFresh}}. Easy enough for a newbie like me. There was a thread with good question and answers about it - and there's a good wiki.
 
It's really useful to root, one piece of advice - Read, read and read again to make sure you know what you're doing and what the implications are (ie unlocking the bootloader will wipe all your data).
 
So if all i want is root, then i dont need to install the bootloader right? That way things wont have to be wiped out. Is that right?
 
I can't think of a good reason to root anymore...I can come up with reasons not to...

There's nothing I need to do that requires root. The N4 will get the latest official OS. Why would I want to compromise security by running as root? Or run buggy custom ROMs?

Root gives you admin access to your device. Installing a "buggy" custom ROM is not the same thing as rooting. You can root and run the stock ROM. People who want to buy Nexus devices are usually the type of people that like to mod their phone.

I'm very security conscious and know how to stay secure. See my signature and profile. I've used SE Linux for years. I was one of the very first to get a G1 and quick to root it.

I just fail to see the point in rooting in most cases anymore, especially a device such as a Nexus 4. Except maybe just to play.

The #1 rule of security is...never, *ever* run as root unless absolutely necessary to do a task.

Apps still request root access which can be denied anytime. It's not like every app is run under su after rooting. So if you still don't think it's *absolutely necessary* to run Adaway or Titanium Backup, or install a custom rom/recovery, well then I guess you won't be rooting your phone.

edit: didn't mean to belittle you, you obviously have plenty of experience with this.
 
To me not rooting is like running Linux without access to SU. Most of the time you will be okay, but sometimes you need the access. Even if I decide to run the stock ROM I still want to be able to install a custom recovery and Titanium Backup.
 
hi...the only or best reason to me for rooting is to set profiles and clock speed as well as root explorer and last but never least terminal emulater...i use these all the time myself b lost without them.
 
I just ordered the 16G version.

I will root it. Who else besides CM has a good printable wiki? I like to print it out and keep it handy for reference.

I told Google not to associate my account with it, and I will probably root first.
Can you get needed apps without using Play? How about Nexus tool kit?
I already have TB, Rom manager and whatever else recommended for the S.

I've got all my apps backed up through TB and they are sitting in a folder on the computer. Once rooted, with GAPPS can I just install on 4 using backup?

Can you block OTA updates? I'd prefer to know what is going on beforehand. I'm seeing complaints about the last 4.2.2 update removing LTE.
I don't need LTE, TMO doesn't have it so that's a non-issue - but who knows what will be changed next? I'd rather read about it first before I do anything.

My S is getting flaky from age or use. I bought it used. Lately pressure on the screen has made the phone unresponsive needing a battery pull. The last episode corrupted something - I had everything backed up and TB restore did the rest once I reloaded CM.

Just an FYI - I have iBird pro 3. It took over a half hour to update over a decent wifi connection. Someone posted that it took them over an hour on a B&N Nook at B&N!
Apps like iBird, Audubon, Mobile Observatory, Sky Safari, are why I have the phone.
Too damn handy to be without, plus you can text or call.
 
When you used the NRT did you have any problems installing it on your computer?
Mine keeps blocking the download as it says there is a virus. Is there any way I can get round this?
It is my first time rooting.
