Help One M8 doing weird things

outlaw38

Lurker
Recently my HTC One M8 has started acting really strange.
  • Apps randomly exit back to home screen
  • Browsers keep refreshing for no reason
  • Struggling with typing texts as it also randomly kicks me back to what ever message I am responding to but does not save the text as a draft. I end up having to type the same message 4-6 times before it will actually allow me to type the full message and send.
I have no idea how to deal with these issues but I have a feeling they are connected somehow.

Sorry to hear you are having issues. We will start with the basics:

-Are you rooted/stock (please give details)
-Hard restart the phone if you haven't already by holding the power button and volume up key for 10 seconds
-If it persists, remove the SD card. Problem still occur?
-Installed any recent apps that have access to these functions?
-Updated any apps recently?
-Installed any third party apps not in the app store?

Please get back to us!

I will check safe mode shortly. I cleared the cache and it seemed to address the typing issue but my browser still seems to reload a fair bit. Another thing I have found is that the phone wakes up randomly, even without touching it.

-Using stock
-I have tried hard reset no luck
-No recent apps but I did move to lollipop
-No third party apps

Next try Malwarebytes.

And go to /sdcard/Android/data and erase any folder there that would suggest by name that it belongs to your browsers - there's a browser hijack out there and a factory data reset won't necessarily clear that space.

Understood, your internal storage (about 25 GB) is called by various aliases including /sdcard for legacy app support, and a physical card is aliased to /sdcard2. Sorry, didn't think to mention that.

The area I'm talking about will appear (typically as your phone) when you plug in to your pc under Windows Explorer - look for the Android\data folder path there.

And if all else fails, given that you're not rooted, no detected malware, and have done a factory data reset with no third party apps added, would be to back up your storage to your pc and clean it out.

And before doing that - does this happen everywhere, including on mobile data or just your home wifi?

If just your home wifi, look at the dns settings it has - there's a nasty router hijack going around now as well.

This is what the folder looks like. I'm not sure what (if anything) needs to be deleted.

As well, this issue happens everywhere including WIFI and network.

I tried safe mode and there appears to be no issue. Not sure what is causing it in regular mode.
I keep coming back to this. O.o

Yet - you mentioned that you've installed no 3rd party apps.

I wonder if your processor is somehow getting into a hard use state.

Try GSam Battery Monitor, let's see what your CPUs are doing.

I am having the exact same problem as above, I downloaded 2 new games invasion and Roman something but I also downloaded battery doc, I had clean master already downloaded cm antivirus which is cm clean master sister app then mistakenly downloaded avg, it's around this time it started doing this, I've tried deleting all above and reinstalling but same problem, my battery also stops charging sometimes, my phone hasn't been rooted, I've tried safe mode, tried SIM and sd card out, keeps doing it, I've wrote this message several times and yesterday when people phoned it cut off and it took me 10 attempts to write a message... I have noticed a lot more advertising when online recently and my phone has all of a sudden started making a notification noise I never set... I did wake up to a battery message too around the time it started but was half asleep and can't remember it, I read somewhere the phone might think it's being constantly docked but I'm clueless as to what to do... Please help?

The phone seems to be waking up now every few seconds.
Did you find what the problem was because my phone has the exact same circumstances... I've just now deleted Google play services data to see if that helps but the problem is inconsistent and stops doing it for periods so hardship to tell... Please reply with what helped you? Thanks

Help!! My phone has just started doing the exact same thing. The browser keep refreshing, text messages drop out and you lose everything you typed, this list of weird things go on. I have tried the suggestions above, clearing the cache works for a while but it reverts to the problem. I can't play music from the headphone socket, it will only play over the phone speakers. Also, when I answer the phone it sometimes defaults to speaker phone and blows my eardrums out. Does anyone have any ideas?

My 1 M8 has recently started acting plain weird. So far I have the following problems

-Headphone socket doesn't work, music comes out of speakers.
-When answering calls, phone defaults to speakerphone and bursts your eardrum
-Phone wakes up randomly without being touched.
-Browser keeps refreshing so you can't ever finish a page of text
-text message, phone drops back to message list, losing all the text you have just typed.
-notification light doesn't flash anymore
-screen rotates in lockscreen

This is all during one week!
I have tried going into the recovery menu, and wiping the cache - this works for a short time, but then the problem re-appears. Has anybody had this problem, and do they know a fix for it?

:(:(:(:(

Let's get this out of the way right now - Clean Master and Battery Doctor are not solutions to anything, they're serious problems and are to be absolutely avoided.

OK, so - when you say that you've cleared cache - is that for the area I suggested earlier, or something else, or have you cleared cache from recovery (not an app, not Clean Master or anything else, recovery)?

I cleared the cache in recovery, and it does seem to help for a while, but then the problem rears its ugly head again.
OK, so - try to reboot without the sim or sd card.

It'll limit you, yes, but if you notice immediate improvement with what's left, you can narrow it down some.

Also - Hold power + volume up until it shuts down. No data will be lost but it will reset the entire motherboard to a fresh state.

@Cotty73 - I merged your similar topic here, that's usually best.

If you want your own thread for your stuff that's cool too, please let me know.

The M8 crowd is generally pretty close knit so I don't think it'll make a big difference but whatever you're comfortable with. :)

Hi,

I'm having simliar issues, I've had the handset since July, no issues until this morning then most of what has already been posted has happened, also,...
no response from the touchscreen, when it does respond I get about 5 seconds use then the screen goes black or back to the lockscreen

I'm trying to take the advice and delete apps although this is proving difficult as it keeps closing down.

In terms of apps my brother in law helpfully installed apps which can save battery, close apps etc so going by some of the replies above I'm blaming him!!

Any help would be gratefully appreciated,

Car

Hi , I'm experiencing similar issues although my handset keeps refreshing to the HTC start up screen then the lock screen any time I attempt to use it, I've removed the sim and let the battery run out then recharged it to 100%.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
