Help One Notification Per E-mail?

I don't know if there is a solution to this, but oh well:

Is there a way for my Droid to only notify me of an e-mail once? For example:

Receive an e-mail
Notification
Done

Right now, this occurs:
Receive an e-mail
Notification
Checkmail
Notification
Checkmail
Notification

I have to open the e-mail before the notifications stopped. It's annoying in bed when I hear DROOOOOID every 10 minutes for the same e-mail.

Many here are having similar issues with email notification when using POP3 accounts. My hotmail keeps telling me over and over again that there is new mail but there's nothing there that I have not seen.

I turned off all alerts so I don't hear the DROID sound. I just have to check on a regular basis, or look for the visual on the top notification bar. Of course, that visual is just as ineffective as it tells me there's new mail when there is not. Only it's quiet !
