My message app shows that there is one new message even though there is not. I deleting all messages (didn't work) and clearing the cache and data of messaging app which worked until I reopened The app and closed it.

Did you try rebooting the phone? That usually helps me with some of the snags I run into with apps.

clear the cache or the data of the messaging app in the application manager, that should get rid of the error

As stated I already tried clearing cache and data thanks though. Also I have tried rebooting several times

Can you uninstall the app? Force close it and restart it?

It's actually the default app. But even if I use other sms apps it all does the same

Try clearing the system cache partition. There are instructions for doing that somewhere. It's different from clearing the app cache. Good luck.

I'd try a different messaging app. I use Textra which I like the best of what I've tried. But there are a lot of texting/messaging apps you could try.

I have the exact same problem - it's more than a little annoying.
I've tried all the suggestions listed above with no luck...

What I ended having to do was use the LG backup except for my messages then do factory reset. Then restore everything. Kind of a pain but it was worth it in my opinion.

A co-worker had this exact same problem on their GALAXY S3,tried a lot of the suggestions previously posted w/no results.
Try removing the shortcut from the homescreen & re-apply it,that cleared the persistent notification.
