Only 55mb available for apps?

I have a Desire on Vodafone. For some time I've been bumping along the ceiling, with regular out-of-space messages. What's odd is that sometimes I install an app, find that I'm now out of space, delete it, but find that the out-of-space icon is still there! The only way to get rid of it is to uninstall something else. So I find that I have an ever-dwindling number if apps in the phone memory. I've already moved everything movable over to the HD card and cleared all caches, including the market one.

Anyway, I've just added up the space occupied by the apps in the phone. It comes to 55mb. This seems pretty feeble to me. Google maps alone takes up one fifth of that. Can that be right??

The /data partition is not only for apps but their cache too. Even your contacts storage takes up this space. And the HTC email account too.

How big is your contacts storage? I think it has problems from HTC people.

Really there is about 147-148MB, but that by no means can be used to install 147 x 1MB apps.

Hi Danfrance,

As I said above, I've already cleared all caches. My contacts take up 2.8mb. I understand what you're saying about not the full 147mb being available for apps, but in fact I'm getting not much more than one third of that!

Sorry. It's a statement. Dalvik cache sits in data as well as app cache. It's not wipeable
