Help 'Open with' menu crashes

Sorry I don't know the name of the menu, but whenever I'm using my phone and I go to open a link or a file and its possible to open that with more than one app, the menu pops up asking you which app you want to use. Well that menu doesn't pop up and instead I get the following error:

Sorry
The application Android System (process android) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
And there is a 'Force close' button

Using Android 2.3.3 on Desire HD

The only thing I can suggest is a factory reset unfortunately. That might not even resolve the problem.

You've probably already tried it, but have you turned off, taken the battery out, put it in again, then turned back on? Does it still do it after that?

I'll try the restart with battery out now.
Factory reset will lose everything? Apps, contacts?
What would be the best way to back all that up, so I could put it back on after?

Are you rooted and have you got ROM Manager installed? If you have try fixing permissions.

They're all linked to your gmail account so after the reset, as long as the handset is linked to the same gmail account, the apps will download themselves again. You'll lose app data (so games saves/configs will be lost)

Contacts should be backed up to the gmail account too. If you access gmail via a PC, then hit contacts, you should see a list of numbers you have stored on the phone?
