Root OpenVitality ROM in the Works

Theres an xl spreadsheet in the tarball with instructions on how to flash the phone. I have not done this myself yet.

Just open up the tarball with 7zip. You'll see it there.

Using PST

* Install SCH-R720 For MVNO Ver1.0002
1. Power on mobile phone as download mode.
- Holding down Muve key(Right down key) and connect USB cable to your phone.
- Press the volume up key.
2. Start the Samsung PST and Select model, R720
3. Select 'SW Download' button from the buttons list in the left side and select 'Emergency' in 'Download Option'.
4. Click "Open OPS file" to select the R720 OPS file as shown below.
'Rookie_v1.1.ops'
5. Click "Open Binary" to select the R720 software binary file as shown below.
'CR720_CRK_MVNO_XXXX.tar.md5.smd'
6. Click "Start Software Download" button. Download process will start.
7. After downloading completed, the phone resets automatically.

Let us know if it works for you.

*edit:
The Odin binary the OP links to in the aforementioned thread looks to be set up to flash the phone (according to the ini file), so you could try that route as well. Just have the odin zip extracted in the same dir as the cricket tar and run Odin.

I assume you are referring to CR720_CRK_MVNO_EH29_REL.smd as the tar? Which menu should I use to flash? PDA, Phone etc?

There is no ops option in the odin version they have provided.

It seems easy to do with the pst software they have provided, pity it appears corrupt.

There are so many layers here with unrelated files its hard to know which to select o)

I believe I found a samsungPST that will work with our device. Everything seems to be the same as listed in the excel instruction sheet.
I've uploaded it to my repo.

So, again, the instructions::

--It may ask you what com port (at least it did when I tried the program, but I didnt have my phone connected so Im sure it prompted me because it couldnt detect my phone)

Incidentally I dont think you can use samsungpst, it requires a dongle and only a dealership would have one and its likely to be linked to one machine, I used to work in a tech department with these, so I think we wasting our time with that. Unless of course they have modified the software.

It looks like we cant use odin either because we dont have a pit file or the relevant files to flash it.

Site's probably just down, but I've got all the files necessary, I'll upload to my repo and make a new thread with instructions.

Glad you grabbed that before it disappeared; I was hoping to use it. Let me know when you've posted the files and instructions again. (No hurries, just want to play around with the stock ROM for a bit. Might go with a month of Cricket so I can go mobile again; I've only been using my Vitality's WiFi access the past month or two.)

I have kept a backup too, if you do go ahead and upload it, I think its fair call to remove the individuals email from the release notes.

How did that work out for you, Pedro? Did it resolve the GPS (and other) issues you were having with your Vitality?

Well, its worth a shot anyhow.
Heres the thread I just created on the corporate flash.

Confirmed working. I will be testing this myself soon.

Thanks.

We were still in the process of investigating the viability of flashing the stock rom. Looks like Spz0 may have made some progress. unfortunately I never got anywhere with the GPS issue. I still dont even know if its software or hardware related. I managed to decompile two exe

Just an update on progress:

After thoroughly, and successfully testing the corp flashing utility, I can now proceed with my Custom ROM, which will be based off the stock EH29 ROM.

Some features will include (but not limited to):
  • Pre-rooted
  • Bloatware removed
  • Deodexed
  • build.prop performance tweaks
  • Camera button restoration
  • Custom UI

Look for this soon.

I _will_ be attempting an ext4 stock ROM after I've completed this rfs ROM, and will attempt to port over req's OC kernel for use on the vitality (as it stands now, flashing the custom kernel, and 5.0.2.8 CWM w/ext4 support nerfs wifi, data and gps -- so that needs to be addressed).
Once that is accomplished, the sky is the limit.

~Cheers

Awesome man. I just picked up this phone and I actually quite like it. I've went from Ascend to Ascend II to Samsung Transfix and now this phone, and it seems to have the best performance out of all 4.

Good luck with the rom and have some fun!

Good luck I wondered why gps amongst other things were taken out of that build. I guess the Drivers need updating. Once all the core issues are resolved, miui can be finished and planted on top, thats my fav rom. I doubt they could do cm9 with miui v4.

Just another update
Alpha testing is in the works. Core system build is stable.
Look for a beta release in about a week.

Just when I was wanting to throw my Vitality against the wall. Awesome. Can't wait to give the beta a go. Thanks a ton for your time, man! I'm sure the rom will rock.
