Root Optimal settings (kernel) for Gingervillian on desire (n00b)

Hello peeps,

Having not long installed Ginger Villian 3.3 on my Desire, I am looking at what I may be able to tweak to optimise my phone.

I have seen the benchmark difference between phones with mod'd kernels in comparison to standard and they look favourable to say the least.

I am very happy with GV, it is much faster, I have partitioned my sdcard and moved Dalvik, and apart from a slight probem with lack of dynamic text reflow, a key feature of my HTC Desire, I am loving it.

I don't want to damage my phone if senior members think a tweak would be unnecessary, but I hhave looked at the kernel from the GV install, and I can see it is a mod and am wondering if this is already very adequate.

I haven't looked in detail at how kernels are improved, but if it's agreed it can be improved noticeably I will do my research, so any advice on the matter would be very much appreciated.

Ta-da

It would be nice if there was a place that non-rocket scientists could go to see a comparison of different kernels and governors. Is there such a resource?

Last time I used GV there were a range of kernels available through Villain Setup. People concerned with optimizing battery life often try Eviollet's kernels too (see kernel link in my sig). Which is best for you is a matter of trial and error, and what you want from a kernel (e.g. optimising for speed and for battery life may give different answers).

HAVS kernels have more flexibility isn't setting cpu voltages than SVS, so are a common choice for people concerned with battery. But they also generally run at lower voltages and some handsets can't run stably with them. That's another reason there's no single right answer - our devices aren't all the same.

As for governors, I've tried them all, but just end up coming back to Ondemand - good balance of responsiveness and battery life without annoyances like slow waking.

I finally bit the bullet and rooted/flashed my phone. Used as much advice as I could find on these forums (SUroot/Rastaman/Hadron etc) and settled on GV as a safe point to start. Phone now runs miles better so thanks to all you guys for the advice. I have been looking in the villain setup and found some bits that can be downloaded and installed. I wasn't going to bother with them but my phone sometimes has a lag between unlocking and then the wifi connecting. There is a kernel that refers to wifi_pm 3.1. Don't know if this is some sort of update? Don't want to do anything that's out of my comfort zone that may screw up what I've now got!
Any advice on set-up would be greatly appreciated.
