Optimize your Droid Eris battery life (READ THIS)

I've literally had my phone off the charger (Was charging overnight to 100%) and have only used it to check the time, turn off Wi-Fi and Enable Mobile Network (When left the house), mark read 3 emails and sign out of Google-Chat.

10% down after 1 hour of basically NO use.

I uninstalled my Task Killer, and Spare Parts, but i'm reaaaally thinkin this was a bad idea..

Actually, Hotmail, i just checked, is polling for messages every 5 mins. I just changed it to 10.

But could this be the ONLY drain? I get Full Bars at work and "3G" with a little "D" underneath it.

I may just switch Gmail to pop my hotmail account and see how that goes for the day...but i have to have my work acct separate so i can "reply as" from it.

I'll letcha know how it go.

I have been getting the impression, after reading a bit in here over the past couple of weeks, that it is the polling for email and even the polling for tower signal too frequently than can needlessly drain the battery, so tweaks are necessary to help optimize battery life.

I may be incorrect, I have no data; only recollections of posts in a thread or two around here.

First, to make sure that mail is being pushed, from home go into "Settings", "Data Synchronization", "Google", make sure that "Auto sync", "Background data", and "Gmail" are set.

Second, to delete (or archive, or mark read, or mark spam, etc) multiple messages, in "Gmail", hit "Menu", "Settings", and make sure that "Batch operations" is checked. When that is checked, when you go into Gmail you'll notice that each message has a check box control next to it to allow batch deletions, etc.
Thanks Doogald, those settings appear to work. Though I still can't delete multiple messages at the same time as I could in mail. I can live with that.

Can't you just check the boxes to the left of the messages u want to delete then hit delete on the bottom right? Or are u looking for a mark all button?

Just noticed in the gmail app, when a message is opened there's no option to reply or forward when opening the menu. Is this true? If yes, hard to believe.

I made a change a couple of days ago that seems to be making a noticeable improvement in battery life. I had the Eris polling my primary yahoo POP 3 acct. every 5 minutes. I changed that setting to manual and now have gmail polling the account every 2 min. Seems frequent polling of POP3 accts drains the battery.

I did the handcent process and have one issue. I get a txt, I get the notification, I read the txt, the notification stays. So many settings, how can I fix? Thanks.

Well, it appears you and I have come to the same conclusion. My battery life is noticeably better now, 2 weeks after purchase, due to what i think are the following reasons:

1. Multiple Charges - It could only help... i do notice that when i do a "partial" charge it seems to make the battery last longer then on a full charge. I dunno, sounds like the whole thing where you're actually hungrier at lunch time if you had eaten a big breakfast than if you didnt eat anything at all..heh. Regardless, it seems the more you throw it on the charger the happier it is than if you just do a drain and recharge every day/night. Sounds obvious..i know.

2. Biggest thing - I removed the pop accounts from my phone and set them up through GMail (Via GMail Web version). Now my phone no longer polls for messages from two servers every 5-10 minutes. Instead, email is PUSHED from Gmail to my phone. They come into one Inbox and i label them as "Work" and "Personal" depending on which acct they're coming from and managing my email on my phone is easy cheesey. The only downfall is i can't compose a new message from my pop accts from within the GMail app, but hopefully a future update will fix this. Atleast when i repy to an incoming msg, my reply from account is the same as the email the msg was sent too. A workaround, but one that i've found the benfit far outweighs the inconvenience. (i've setup the pop accounts anyways on my phone but turned sync to manual so it never gets messages, just allows me to send if/when i need to which is rare, usually i only need to send email from my phone when i'm replying to a msg already sent)

With this change alone, my battery now lasts though the day. That's all i need.

3. Screen Brightness to 15%

4. Switch from Mobile to Wifi whenever possible (mostly when at home/work).

Just be mindful of how your phone is using data. Is it updating stuff every 5 minutes? (Facebook, twitter, mail, weather, etc, etc?) Tone down those settings and you'll see a dramtic improvement. Mail especially.

Good luck!

This seems badass but I dont think my cover would fit with it, and its a nice cover that allow me to keep it clipped to my belt.

Throwing it in my pocket is a no go.
Seidio Innocell 3500mAh Extended Battery for Verizon HTC Droid Eris - Android Central Store

THis has been mentioned in this thread and several others. It comes with it's own custom back plate to accomodate the extra 3mm of thickness. Almost all cases won't work with this battery.

I would suggest the 1700mah batter as it gives 25% more than the stock battery and is arguably better made than the stock one. And, it doesnt add extra thickness...

sorry about that. i actually just ended up ordering 2 spare batterys and a standalone battery charger. My plan now is to rarely ever actually charge my phone. Ill just have 3 batterys i can slap in on rotation.

I just got my 1750 and am going to condition it for a few days. So far so good though. I'm already noticing an improvement.

Hello everyone :)

I just wanted to drop in and leave a thank you post to Caddyman and everyone else who contributed to this thread. After conditioning my batter and following most of the settings suggested, my last charge held up for just a few minutes shy of 40 hours ^_^

I do however have one tiny question that I may have overlooked the answer to during the course of this thread. Should I continue to allow my battery to drain completely and do a full recharge every time, or can I just charge it when it needs it here and there?
I will most likely continue to do full drains and recharges anyway, but am just curious to the benefits, or lack of continuing this cycle.

Thanks in advance,
Tim

From my r/c back ground these batteries love to be topped off.

I believe this to be true because the battery has only a limited number of "full charge cycles" in its life. I think I've read approximately 300 full charge cycles.

Thanks guys, I shoulda known that. My father was real big into R/C flying, so big that the memorial tattoo that I got for him is of his favorite plane :) but, I can't exactly get advice from him anymore.

I was considering an extended life battery, but don't think I'll really need it now ;)

Quick question about turning off mobile network to save battery life...I'm just wondering if I would still receive picture/video messages and email with it off. I don't know if sacrificing those functions for more battery life would be a such good trade off. Thanks ahead of time!

Turning Mobile Network off basically turns your internet off (unless you have wifi on.) So you will not be able to check your email. Although, you will still be able to text and call.

So I guess it's safe to say if, theoretically, you were sent a picture/video message you wouldnt receive it at all if you had mobile network off?
