Help Optimus battery life

On your list of good battery life phones, I'm not sure of Droid X/2. It seems to get mixed user reviews on it. Some users are having trouble getting through daytime while some others claim solid two days. I guess they are not so good with default settings, apps out of box.

I've just replaced a Droid X with the optimus... the X is very good. I thought it was maybe just a fluke based on the posts I'd read in the forums... but there are some good reviews over on anandtech where they benchmark battery life (in detail) on current gen phones. The iphone4 is best on most benchmarks with the Droid X/2 second (except call time where the X/2 leads by a pretty good margin).

I think a lot of the posts complaining about battery life on the X/2 are folks who expect the phone to be able to handle whatever they throw at it... whereas anyone who's had a smartphone understands you need to work within the limits of current smartphone battery technology (at least with current gen smartphones).

Thanks, I am doing all of those things. I am using Quick Settings to toggle wifi/bluetooth/etc only when I need it and I don't have anything set to autosync. Screen on lowest settings as well.

I understand that it is capable of running instances that were not possible on older devices, however, I think that if they are going to pack in the capabilities, they should have the power to support it. It kind of defeats the purpose of being able to do these things if I have to be tethered to a wall :(

It's a wonderful phone and if being tethered to a charger is the way it has to be...then it is what it is. I was just expecting more from the battery.

The big problem that LG, HTC, Samsung, Motorola, etc. face is that battery hardware has not kept up with hardware and software innovations.

Batteries still leave a lot to be desired insofar as providing good, reliable power that is efficient and lasts for more than 12 hours. An average Android phone can last with moderate usage 6-8 hours. Some are better than others, and obviously the best way to preserve the battery is not to use the phone, but that's not an option as it defeats the purpose.

There are good things on the horizon for battery life, though. For example, in India, an abundance of mobile devices are used and in many locations within India there is a shortage of reliable power sources and so engineers there are working on battery technology that is charged by solar power. In that sense, the battery could conceivably last without ever needing to be tethered to a power source. However, this technology hasn't been perfected to the point where it can be used for mobile devices (yet).

It's really just a waiting game for mobile battery technology to catch up to the various hardware and software innovations over the past few years and into the foreseeable future.

Though I agree that battery technology has to catch up for mobile devices, I also think the advances in CPU, memory and android OS will help with battery life. Future Android version will have improved memory/resource management and future mobile CPUs will consume less power with smaller feature size, better processor architecture. So it will be combined effort for longer battery life, not just by advances in battery technology.

And getting only 6~8 hours with moderate usage is not average android phone. I think even phones like Dinc, Evo, Epic known as battery hog will do better than that unless they are running tons of apps syncing frequently. Moderately used android phone should be lasting more than 12 hours easily.

Well fam member. , we forgot wen we last carged te phone last night, and today we used it a few times, online calls etc. and wen went to use the phone was exhausted. where it dimly lit te four buttons.

telling us 0 % so bad that no power even wit the power cord plugged did not turn phone on to ten minutes into a carge, once phone hits 7% its usable.

you may remove the battery but te phone needs both battery and ac to work.

we forgot tat the battery was used to full extent, and thought the phone dies, tis happ'd to anoter device as it is easily forgotten

In my experience, if I will be in someplace where charging the phone is not an option (camping, hiking etc) I will disable the data features (e-mail- internet-blue tooth etc) and the phone Battery will last me at least for a couple of days with limited calls, and that was using a Hero, with the optimus I will expect even longer life. I will turn on the data a couple of times to check e-mails and turn it back off.

I was wondering if there is a way to do that.
you mean just go into settings and unsybnc data,
or how?

wis a company made a economy switc button to switch back and fourt? lol we were just talking about that today

My battery life is OUTSTANDING! Compared to other friends android phones that use theirs moderately like I do. Lasts all day. I always plug mine in at night so it is fresh the next day. I leave my background data and auto sync off. I only turn it on when I want to sync my gmail account. My bluetooth is off unless I need it, no wifi, or gps left on. Basically I leave everything off until I need to use it. Dare I say this is the best cell phone I have ever owned!

To me the biggest culprit is time without signal, which happened on my epic too when i had it. My time without signal sometimes 50%, 28% etc, which drains the battery a lot. What was discovered before is by turning on and off airplane mode fixes it for some reason, also i used spare parts and enabled aggressive in process management mode seems to do a good job too.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I feel like my battery life is terrible...although I did abuse my phone the first full day I had with it (today).

When I took it to sprint yesterday to have my numbers transferred from my dumb phone the sales associate installed ATK and told me it was a must have.
At 6:30am I had 100% battery. At 6pm it was 20%.

My usage:
Intermittent texting from 8am-2pm
Constant texting from 2pm-5pm
I used wifi-hotspot for a total of 30 minutes
I played Angry Birds for at least 45 minutes (darn you level 1-12..darn you!)
I've read intermittent email throughout the day
Intermittent facebooking
I played sudoko for about 45 minutes

Intermittent messing poking through menus to see what they do
4 phone calls totaling 67 minutes
My 3g was on, backlight was low, on silent (no vibrate)

So, I suppose that isn't too bad...but that was fairly minimal use for me being a person that has the phone surgically implanted into my hand. I also plan on using the phone as my primary MP3 player to replace my broken Zune. If that is the case, I usually play my Zune at least 2-3 hours straight a day in the car and at the gym. I wouldn't be so peeved about battery life but it takes forever to charge the battery. Yesterday when I got it, I tracked the time it took for charging and to go from 13-37% it took 1 hour and 45 minutes.

What would be some additional ways to recoup battery on this puppy? I know I'm using more features than with my dumb phone...but I was constantly texting/web surfing/checking emails/taking & sending pictures and talking on my dumb phone and I didn't have to charge that thing for DAYS at a time.

Thanks :)
Those will kill it...also when you charge it, turn everthing off, except text and calls. It'll speed it up.

It depends on your use. My battery life is pretty good. I have an Iphone which I used in a similar manner and the battery life was MAYBE half of what the optimus is.

I plan on buying a spare battery or two.

I have an Evo, at first had horrible battery life, now I just use the power control widget to make sure wifi, gps etc are off when I don't need them.

Another thing, if you don't use the phone much at work, turn off background data, it helps a lot. Also, screen brightness helps, but if you are not using the phone, just tap the power button once to turn the screen off. Those two changes probably helped my battery last 50% longer.

Go into settings, go to into wireless and network settings, scroll all the way to the bottom and you have mobile networks, disable it there, unless you have quick settings then you can do it there as well.

^ Bingo.

My Optimus is going on 40 hours now. I still have 63% left. Not a representative of real world as the cellular radio is off (not active yet). It's had about four hours of surfing on wifi, another hour of settings, and at least two hours of angry birds. Even when cellular data is running, I see no reason why this phone won't make 24 hours of real use.

I agree that 24 hours is very doable for most people with this phone. Although obviously it depends on usage. I had a light usage day yesterday where I used my phone to play bubble blaster 2 for an hour and check a few emails... after 16 hours I was at 65%. The norm for me is more like 50-60% by end of day.

If you stream media, make a ton of phone calls, use tethering or are in a weak signal area your battery life is going to take a serious hit.

Out of the 4 smartphones I've owned this phone has the best battery life I've experienced (the Droid X I had was a close second).

How do you turn off background data, and what does that include? Email and texts?
It won't affects texts, but it will affect your email. To me, that's not a problem, I wouldn't be able to read my personal email at work on my phone often anyway. What I do, is turn the background data off, and when I want to check my email, I open the app, and force a refresh, so its only check when I want it to. I turn the background data back on when work is over.

I think its been answered already, but to toggle Background data, you can go to Settings > Accounts & Sync > and uncheck Background Data.

If you use a Power Widget, its the icon that is a circular arrow, it might read as Auto-sync.

I've done other battery saving tips I've read, some help more than others, but the background, and especially leaving the screen off when I'm not using it have helped immensely. They say the screen takes up a lot of the battery, but you don't really realize exactly how much until you get in the habit of keeping it off (assuming you left it on a lot prior).

I don't know about you but I keep my background data and auto app sync buttons off and I still get all of my email no problem, comcast, hotmail, gmail, and a corporate email. Still get them as regularly as I have them set for.

So yours is getting emails automatically with notifications as they come even with background, auto-sync off? That seems weird to me.
If background data and auto-sync are off, your phone wouldn't receive emails until you manually refresh in each email app. That's what he was saying.

Yeah. I am a dork. I havent checked those settings in a while. Apparently they are ON, and I thought they were off. My bad. :(

Exactly four days on battery with 43% left. Wifi on, lots of idle time...but I really am not complaining. Even if 3G cuts this in half it's insane.

The time without signal in my home, for some reason is very bad, if you notice in the picture since my phone been on, the time without signal at the 15m was 50%, then i toggled airplane mode on and off, now the percentage is decreasing. This bug really need to get sorted out.

[edit]
I reseted my phone, and it starts off with 50%.

And to double verify, this a few min later:

The crazy part is you notice, all pictures i have full bars.

Not complaining about battery life, but i know this bad boy can probably do 2 days or more, and this bug limiting me to just about 1 day.
