Help Orange bars

Jack_L

Newbie
Hi
I purchased an LG Nexus 4 about 9 months ago and ever since I got the 4.4.2 update my bars kept being orange. I tried rebooting the phone, turning airplane mode on and off, took all the steps google support told me to, I even resetted the phone a couple of times and the orange bars kept coming back.

Could this be hardware or software related, I don't know... I only know it's driving me nuts. Maybe 4.4.3 could resolve this, I'm not sure.

If anyone else has a similar problem please let me know.

Thanks

Hello and Welcome to Android Forums. :)

I'm not sure I am following you. If you mean the signal strength bars in the notification area, with 4.4.2 there isn't any color unless you are running a custom rom or theme that changes that.

As far as I know 4.4.2 is the latest version of Android out there.

I can use the internet, facebook and so on but I don't receive push emails untill I connect to a wifi connection and that's what bothering me.

Go to menu>settings>Wireless & Networks (more...)>mobile networks>access point names and see if you have "internet.proximus.be" as your APN.

hmmm ... if you manually sync your account, does your push email show up?

Is it all push email? Gmail, too?

Okay, now, go to menu>settings>wireless &networks>data usage then scroll down to the gmail app and tap on it. Scroll to the bottom and make sure "restrict background data" is NOT checked.

If it is checked, then uncheck it and do the same for your mail app and any other app that gets push notifications.

I'm running out of ideas here. Could it be possible that mail traffic is blocked by Proximus? Can you send email from those accounts when not connected to WiFi?

The signal strength indicator in the Quick Toggles pulldown does turn orange to indicate that it can't communicate with Google's servers (just like the holo-blue bars would turn white (or was it gray?) before 4.4).

At the OP, if you go to Settings > Accounts > Google > (menu) > Sync Now, do you get an error?

I did not know that. Never seen it myself. Good to know, though. Thanks CS. :)

Very curious that it would sync over wifi (which indicates that the account is configured correctly) but not over data (which would usually indicate an APN or service issue), yet other mobile data works fine.

Additionally, I did a search for anyone else having trouble with Google sync on your carrier and haven't had a whole lot of luck - if others are having problems, they're not posting about it in English at least ;)

About the only suggestion I could make right now is to try removing and re-adding your Google account on the phone to see if it makes any difference.

I wil try to search for anyone else having trouble with google sync on my carrier in dutch then. :) And I also tried to remove and add my account several times.

If you still can't find anything or figure out a solution, about the last measure I can suggest is that you perform a Factory Reset. This will erase all data off of the phone (so make sure that you have anything important backed up either to your Google account or your PC), but will revert it to a like-new state which should help to resolve any software-based issues.

Let us know if you need any help with that :)

I've already did that 3 times before. The last time I did it the bars remained white for about 24 hours. Haven't found anything about sync problems on my carrier in dutch also. I tried removing my sim card and now the bars go from being white to orange and back every few minutes.

OK, ever since I removed my sim card and put it back in it works fine... Let's keep our fingers crossed that that was the case. :)

If it happens again, remove SIM & blow some canned air into the slot & on the SIM...if it happens after that, check with carrier about getting a new SIM.

Not sure if its the same issue but my Nexus 4 drops from H to E connection and goes to orange bars on a daily basis. At this point it can't do anything on the network other than voice calls.

Its running stock and several factory resets have not fixed this.

temporary workaround when it occurs is to go into settings, select Mobile Networks - Network Operators and then when the list eventually comes up, select Choose Automatically.

hey presto, resets the connection, for a while at least.

Not sure when or why the dropouts occur - wondering if its when I am in and out of connectivity (London underground or whatever).

Hoping against hope that a firmware drop fixes this but am seeing reports(vague rumours) that 4.4.3 isn't coming to Nexus 4 yet.
