Root Orange UK Desire - New ROMSs, New Radios + Simlocks

Firstly, sorry for wasting your time if this is a done + dusted issue. I can't find a definitive answer to it whilst googling + using xdas or this forum's search function.

Basically, I have a Orange UK Desire with clockworkmod recovery and LeeDroid 2.3d (I tried 2.4.1 but it hung on the white htc screen twice for me, so downgraded) as well as a goldcard.

I want to know what new ROMS I can run stably + reasonably without flashing a new radio, or If I can flash a new radio safely?

I've heard Orange UK Desires often simlock when you try a new radio, I use an orange SIM with it so I don't know if a simlock would be a problem for me but searching hasn't really produced anything to help me.

I heard that running a newer ROM means you really should use an up to date radio, and that the newer radios have more efficient battery usage, which is rather important to me as my battery is verging on terrible at the moment (although I do push gmail, exchange, whatsapp and liveprofile - could uninstall liveprofile + stop exchange being push but not sure to what extent it would help).

Basically just want to know what my options are with radios + ROMS? For people who have been simlocked because of their radio, what have they been able to do to fix it? and does it affect orange SIMS or just people trying to use other network sims on orange desires?

If there is a thread like this just link me up, most important to me is how to upgrade the radio or what roms I can use with the default orange radio.

If you're passing by and don't want to read all the above, I'm asking what ROMS and radios orange UK desire users should try, and hurdles they are likely to face?

As long as your radio, after the underscore starts with a 5, eg xxxxx_5.xxxxx, then you wont need to flash a new radio really.

Rooting and flashing is often best with the sim taken out with orange. Even if yoiu use an orange sim, simlock is a problem for you.

That said, I am not on Orange so better information may be given by others :)

Otherwise, any rom should be fine.

hurdles they are likely to face?

1. Call centre staff will tell you anything you want to hear, if they speak Engerlish. Those that do don't speak it well enough, wont understan your point!

2. There's a guy in the Orange shop in town who winks at me .

3. Ring a call centre and then get hassle for the next few days with "Rate our performance" texts.

4. Orange phones ave that stupid square on the back.

5. Cyanogen is very stable.

6 A .27 radio and its ril is like lightning.

Err. Thats it :D

i have flashed, leedroid, insertcoin, gv and defrost all with the same radio (the same one that came with my orange rom) and have never removed the sim. Maybe i've just been lucky, but i've never had a simlock. :)

I have an Orange UK Desire, initially de-branded then rooted and flashed Leedroid, now GV (been with it since 0.8 and haven't found a reason to leave yet...).

Not really an issue, I did read that taking the sim out when flashing prevents sim lock, but forgot/@rsed it up and ended up with the sim lock myself. Paid for an unlock code. No big deal. Phone is now no longer locked.

If I'm not mistaken this subject was raised a bit ago and someone posted a link on how to unlock it yourself, I'm not at home now but I'm sure someone will repost it, and this is something you can keep if you need it.

thanks for the helpful responses guys!

I hadn't realised that taking the sim out whilst flashing is a way to get rid of simlock, is that when flashing a radio or a rom?

it's starting to sound like flashing radios isnt really neccessary unless you're nitpicking on performance.

the unlocking iso is a godsend! i'll try it later and report back to make sure it works (on ebay they say my phone is 'supernew' and will cost more than a standard code so im not 100% it will..... most of what those ebay sellers say sounds like a pile of balls to me though)

lol at the orange post, before orange I was with three and I thought their service was bad ... until I walked into an orange shop or tried speaking engerlish and ended up with insurance i didnt ask for!

finally: thank you SURoot, your guide to rooting has made my first android experience considerably less painful than orange wanted it to be!
