Hello and welcome to Android Forums ront22 :)

You have the carrier minority variant of the Galaxy S4 from Verizon and unlike all other models of the Galaxy S4, with the exception of AT&T, your firmware is issued by your carrier and not Samsung. This is forced to your phone OTA, (Over The Air), by Verizon, automatically.

However, as the Galaxy S4 model is now already two and a half years old and is EOL, (End-of-Life), it will not be receiving an official update to Android 6.0, Marshmallow, in future.

Do I take it from your posting that NO S4 will be receiving the Marshmallow update or just the version from Verizon?

Correct. No Galaxy S4 is scheduled to receive Android 6.0, Marshmallow. Android 5.1.1 will be the last official update, when it is released.

Thanks for that. On that basis the S6 it makes me lean even more to the S6 as a new acquisition.

Is 5.1.1 and 5.1 the same firmware? My Verizon S4 is still on 5.0.1. I have been refusing the update because I was rooted at one time and thinking about rooting again. I know if I take the 5.1 no more root. But I may just take the update since I'll probably be getting a new phone in a couple of months. That's why I was wondering when you said "when it's released" if 5.1.1 is an improvement of 5.1 since 5.1 is already available for the S4. Or is it really the same firmware.

Verizon Sx devices won't be rootable on 5.1.1...if you are already rooted, do not take the update, unless you are okay with losing root. Also..if rooted, disable sdm.apk to avoid further updates that can break root

Make no mistake, this is nothing to do with Google or Samsung. Verizon are rolling out their new mega locked down and unrootable bootloaders to the Galaxy S4, S5, S6 and also to other manufacturers and models. Verizon and AT&T are doing this to their customers... no one else. If you accept the latest updates... rooting is history!

I have a hard time believing that it is not rootable, otherwise they could not make changes. Unless that is part of a planned obsolescence scheme, which I suppose could be part of the EOL plan.

Believe it!

Verizon firmware has been unrootable for awhile now. This applies to a number of their phones, manufacturers and models, including the S6 and Motorola Droid Turbo. Hardly EOL phones I think you'll agree.

It's called Market Share. The Telcos "lock" their phones and provide dedicated software which prevents another SIM card from operating. By stopping "Root" availability, you are stuck with that specific Telco. They maintain their Market Share. The better idea is to purchase a non-Telco dedicated phone where you are in charge.

yup, I have been a locked in Sammy user ever since smartphones showed up..... I was a green green neophyte then, and did not realize the problems of buying a contract phone.

I think my next one is going to be a non-Contract device. I am leaning now on Nexus.... when, don't know, but I have the itch and it wants scratched.

I have endeavoured to purchase my smartphones "unlocked" but I did purchase a Huawei Ideos from Ebay.au with a broken screen for $5.00 about 4 years ago. When I received the phone I replaced the screen and booted the phone then found it was "locked" to Virgin Mobile in Australia. I contacted the previous owner through her Ebay email and asked her to get the "unlock code" from Virgin. It took a couple of weeks to finally convince Virgin that the phone was in New Zealand and there was no Virgin Network in NZ before they released the code. All went sweet as once I had the unlock code. The phone worked flawlessly and my grandson was the proud owner of a smartphone with a SIM from 2°Mobile in NZ. Yes, we got the code for free as the phone was not in Australia - would have cost $50.00AUD otherwise. I hate being "tied" to a contract these days as there is quite a bit of competition in pricing.
