OT: Sim Card for month in USA

Hi, slightly off topic, but for Desire and you lot seem to know your stuff.

I'm travelling in the states for a month. Is it worth getting a local sim or just paying the crazy roaming charges. If local sim, what's the best way to get one?

I only really need the internet side of things. Will occasionally check voicemail and the odd text, but those costs will be small. Cycling Vancouver to San Fran so having unlimited access for those 2 weeks would be a massive help.

Any ideas? I'm on O2 with an unbranded Desire.

I know that on some networks you can buy international boosters for when you are away. But thats all the help i can give

Just to tell you, you WILL NOT be able to use 3G over there. The american 3G network operates on a different frequency to the European one, which the Desire can't access. So you'll be stuck with slow 2G networks for internet access unless you find a wifi hotspot.

Most people advise just to buy a US Sim card before you go off ebay. You can activate it here or before you go. I'm doing this next month.
Maybe try another of the android phone subforums where more US people post and they'll be able to point you in the right direction.
