Root OTA notification WITH StopOTA.zip - BB0.4

Hey Bartl3by, any chance you can explain the details of the patch, so I can build one for my HTC Incredible?
Thanks in advanced!

i'm rooted, no custom rom, stock kernel. Getting the install update message and don't want to lose root. Will Pete's patch work for me also. I only see this patch being referenced to BuglessBeast is why i'm asking.

This worked perfectly. Thanks!!!!

Here you go guys. 99.999999% Pete's old FRG01B patch. I just fixed it to work for the FRG22D OTA.

Instructions:
Just like youve done a million times to your phone before...

Place update.zip on your sd root
Boot into recovery
Select "install update.zip"
Let it do its thing
Select Reboot when prompted
Congradulations, no more annoying update.

Understood if you dont trust a noob but this has been ran on over 200 droids so far after it was posted on another forum and nobody has mentioned any issues yet. Its currently on my phone as well. Just trying to do my part in demolishing the Apple empire. Enjoy guys.

Excellent! On reboot, the "Update available" notification showed for a few seconds, but then it disappeared. Went to About Phone, Updates and it says I'm up to date. Great! This is AFTER I went through editing the build.prop as mentioned above AND editing the description line, also. Thanks!

Thanks for the update.zip Works perfect, also bought root explorer...the zip changes the build. I verified it. Now How can I get flash 10.1? It doesn't show up in my market?

nice how you worked in your name/info in the About Us phone section by editing the "ro.build.display" line :)

anyone else notice that ;) I edited it back to simple FRG01B

Thank you very much! This was the ticket!

Hi.
I am new here and I read this topic.
I have a problem with a froyo install here
The build number is voles-userdebug 2.2.FRFxx 49593 test-keys

fingerprint says 2.1-update1/ESE81/29593
(though according to the guide I used to update it it is 2.2)

I have no access to paid applications on the market, so does anybody knows of a way to edit that file? I have a terminal emulator and I wouldn't mind using a vi like text editor or something.
Thank you

Edit:
Sorry I wasn't more verbose.
My problem was it would start downloading the update without asking, and after downloading it would show the system as up to date when in fact it wasn't so. And after a short while it would start downloading the update again (a 77 Mb file) in an endless cycle.

I ended up using the update.zip shown above, but I would really like to know how I coud edit files directly myself.
Can someone point me to documentation or tutorials?

Hopefully, you have Root Explorer (and if you don't, I highly recommend it because it's so worth the couple of bucks). Here are the instructions to prevent to the FRG22D OTA update (which I was getting yesterday myself):

1. In Root Explorer, go to /system/
2. Tap Mount R/W at the top, then long-press on build.prop and scroll down to Open in Text Editor
3. Once the file is open as a text file, scroll down until you see the line that says: "ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.2/FRG01B/45394:user/release-keys" and change it to read as follows:
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.2/FRG22D/50454:user/release-keys
4. Tap the back key and say "Yes" when it asks you to save (it will automatically back up the original file for you)
5. Tap Mount R/O at the top
6. Reboot

You will no longer get the OTA update notifications, because Verizon will believe you already have it.

This didn't work for me and I went back and changed the description also after my first try didn't work, I took screenshots from root explorer so maybe someone can help me. I'm running BBv.4 and followed this fix and I still get the update. Do I have to boot into recovery or just reboot the phone? I just turned the phone off and back on. Can someone help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I didn't want to install the zip file because I I like learning how to do things myjself. Thanks

Nevermind, once I changed the description, rebooted and waited a few seconds it went away, I went into About Phone and checked for updates and it says system currently up to date, it worked!!! Thanks anyway and thanks for the fix guys. I love this community and I love having control of my phone! ROOT

Thanks Bartl3by, I used clockwork to install the patch. Rebooted after the update and it did work.

Has Pete gone on an extended vacation? I'm really looking forward to an update to BB Froyo BB .04. :D

I was flipping through ROMs this week and installed BBv0.4 and had the same Update notification issue. I manually installed 2.2 then rooted and have been running custom ROMs but have never gotten an OTA update notification.
My question: Why does BB need a patch but Chevy, LFY, CM6, Sapphire, etc. ROMs don't get the notification?

Because they are still supporting their Roms, Pete is busy with school and BB is being neglected as of late. We are all better off if we learn this stuff on our own, I personally will have my Droid1 for another year and I know these developers are going to move on to the newer phones. Start learning, its actually fun anyway. Let me know if BBv.5 comes out anytime soon, I need something fresh.

That file is only for stopping OTAs on Bugless Beast .04 and if I remember correctly that method was found to cause a significant shortening of battery life. There are three things you can do:

1. Download ROM manager and install Clockwork Recovery (CWR). Then accept the update and CWR will block the installation but the phone will think it is updated stopping the notifications, or

2. Search Kratos's posts for the Stop OTA one. It details how to use Root Explorer to modify a file to fake the OTA notification out and stop it, or

3. Download ROM Manager, install CWR, MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT ROM (can't stress this enough), then download and install a frg83d ROM using ROM Manager. This will also stop the notifications. Good Luck.

@ OMJ--Can I use Linda File Manager instead of Root Explorer to perform the same task as long as I'm careful not to edit any other line of code?

So I was having similar issues with my tmobile mytouch and when I did a google search I found this thread - I had a problem with following through with this advice and posted about it somewhere else on the android forum website - then realized I could hopefully just copy and paste what I wrote on a different thread any see if anyone could help me:

First I should start off by saying until today I have never tried to mess with my phone or change anything on it ever before. My mytouch 3g updated to Android 2.2 and started running SO slowly that it was practically useless. I looked up stuff on how to uninstall it and found a forum that explained how to unroot your phone and have it go back to the android version it was originally. I did this by adding a zip file named sappimg and rebooting it.
So now I am back to having an older version of Android, and my phone is fast again.. the problem is that now every hour it prompts me to install the new version of android and there is no option for it to stop reminding me. I have read so many different forums and see that some people have used programs in a rooted phone that has only stopped the prompting for a few days. I found a REALLY promising post on here
OTA notification WITH StopOTA.zip - BB0.4
where the OP posted a link to a zip file that tricked your phone into thinking it updated. Problem is that not only is it for a different type of phone - but when I tried it anyway - I did the restart where I hold down the power and the volume down - that process only recognized and tried to access the sappimg file I put on it earlier today - it did not give me the option to run the update fake out file. help?!?!
