OTA Sensation update to Android 2.3.4

In an ideal world every phone would be unbranded and we'd all get every update at exactly the same time. But in reality that's total unfeasible, it just wouldn't work.

You've made an assumption that because you haven't got this update first, you won't get 2.4 or any other update first. How do you know that? Please don't think i'm having a go cos i'm not, i'm just simply saying that it isn't as big a deal as perhaps you think it is. Chances are this update was created to fix a bug that was more apparent on the vodafone software and actually has no relevance to unbranded phones? who knows.

I think the point is HTC need to be honest about it. If they told people about their exclusivity deals we could make an informed decision. Instead HTC deny it but it's clearly there.

This is HTCs response to my mail:

Thank you for your mail regarding updates.

Not even had any information that the phone will be updatede.

And since vodaphone make there own updates i cant really blame them for doing a good job and updating.
after all they have there own software on the phone.

So we dont have anything to do with this.

I'm confused, what HTC are being dis-honest about? As far as i'm aware a date for release has never been promised and i've never seen anything from them that says unbranded will absolutely always get the updates first.

As for the Vodafone exclusivity, it was made public knowledge that Vodafone would have a 1 month exclusivity period before other networks could range the sensation

I did not say dishonest, but HTC are clearly holding back an update released in other countries.

If Vodafone still have an exclusivity period on all future updates, why don't HTC say that?

Software varies between countries so chances are the update for your particular build isn't ready yet, it's not as simple as making one update and rolling it out...

Vodafone had a time to market exclusivity, nothing has ever been said that voda have priority on updates and your basing the assumption on 1 update?

What Chistery means is, if the updates ready for unbranded handsets all over europe it is ready for the UK so why hold it back? Unless they have a deal with Vodafone and are keeping quiet about it.

Example: Unbranded Sensations that are sold and work in germany are the same version as the one's sold in the UK that are unbranded. i.e you can use a UK handset in Germany and vice versa (its called the european version). Yet germany had the update around 11 days ago.

When the 2.2 update was released for the Desire in Europe we got that straight away, as again the handsets are the same in most the european countries and this should be no different.

Dont get me wrong, I'm not losing any sleep over this its only an update for my phone. However when I read these threads, that is the personal opinion I have on the subject.

Cheers

PS I wonder if we can get the update now if we use a proxy server in Germany on our internet connection, then connect via Wi-fi and search for the update. The HTC server will think we are in Germany. Although its more likely they have a list of which country each handset is sold in by IMEI number, and ones sold in the UK probably wouldnt get the update.

Or more likely, the update is being held back to restrict the strain on their servers rather than having everybody jump on it at once, crash the server and then nobody gets the update which is what will inevitably happen if they just released it to everyone at once.

I really don't understand people's frustration with this, where have HTC ever promised either a) a date for release, b) unbranded would get it first c) UK would get updates first? They are all assumptions, no?

where have HTC ever promised either..

a) a date for release
Agree they havnt. However the update for unbranded European Sensations is already released, and has been rolled out to most European countries already. The UK is part of Europe and indeed uses the Euopean version of the Sensation. So the update is ready but has been withheld for some strange reason in the UK.

b) unbranded would get it first
Agree, they never said that. However it has been released to the unbranded European version of the Sensation first (almost a week before vodafone released theres). The UK uses the European version and is part of Europe, so we should of received it by now at least.

c) UK would get updates first? They are all assumptions, no?
Agree, they never said the UK would get it first. However getting it after most of the other European countries does kinda suck :D

Cheers
