Help Ota update for root

THX FOR YOUR HELP! It's really good to know you have a community of people willing to help a new guy, I really appreciate it.

Hi, I recently joined the world of root with my Evo 4G. I rooted via the latest unrevoked 3 and also unrevoked forever (s-off). After completing this process I switched my recovery file back to a PC36IMG file and applied the OTA update. It seemingly corrupted my Root until I updated to the new SuperUser zip (2.3.6.1) from Superuser 2.1. Note: I updated to the new Superuser app via sd card recovery AFTER I ran the ota and then flashed a custom recovery back. All works wonderful, still rooted and updated works well .

The problem comes into play when I tried to do the same for my friends phone. The root went well as well as the forever (s-off). In error I updated his superuser app BEFORE I ran the OTA , and now the update just fails everytime I try to install. I have tried several fixes via reading different post with similar issues but none have the exact problem.

I haven't flashed a rom before and would rather stick with the stock rom for my friends phone for now and just fix my mistake at this moment. Given that I updated my phone successfully I cant seem to understand exactly how I got off track with his. The only difference that I am aware of is the fact that I updated mine with superuser 2.1 installed and attempted to update his phone while 2.3.6.1 was installed.

If that difference is the culprit I've tried to flash back to superuser 2.1 and it seemS impossible. What can I do to get back on track. thanks again in advance.

You should never accept an OTA update while rooted, or unroot to accept it. 99% of the time you'll either break your phone or lose root for a while. As far as I'm concerned you're either lucky, or something is messed up and you just don't know it yet. You used unrevoked, which means you still have s-off (unless you flashed the s-on tool), but you probably have hboot 2.10. Are you positive you have full root with no issues? If nothing else, if you made any nandroid backups before, they aren't going to work anymore.

That being said, stop where you are with the other phone. Rerun unrevoked to get clockwork back (or just flash it). Get the phone back in the fully rooted state it was before. Then read up on flashing roms and flash one of these:

[ROM] RUU SuperSonic EvO 3.70.651.1 OTA - Stock - Sense - Deodexed & Odexed Version - xda-developers
♠♠♠[SteelROM RevI.2]♠♠♠ UPDATED 12/19 v3.70.651.1 │Rooted│ DeOdexed - xda-developers

Those are basically stock versions of the latest update, but in flashable rom format (you'll have to flash the radios separately, and you won't get the new hboot).

Thanks I appreciate every iota of info it comes in handy.

After reading your post I stopped my attempt to run the ota on my friends phone and wondered if I did indeed break root in some way or another on my phone. I downloaded a handful of apps that requires root to see if all was well. All of the apps worked with the exception of one that read an error "write access for the system partition was not established make sure your device has full root before you try again". Note: I tried this same app on my buddy's phone (the phone that I could not get the update to work on) and it works. If I did break root, how do i reestablish the full access? I was under the impression that turning the S-Off would allow me to run ota's and still be rooted without conflict? What is Hboot, and how do I make sure I have the latest/best hboot update?

Hi. Im dealing with the same problem. My phone updated at wee hours of the morning and killed root access. Can I just run unrevoked again to re aquire it?

If you go to hboot, do you still see s-off? I would think you still do since that's how unrevoked works, but that very well might not be the sace. The problem is that you gave yourself a new hboot, which is unpredictable at the moment. Check a) your hboot version (2.10?) and whether or not you see s-on or s-off. As far as hboot version is concerned, there is never a good reason to upgrade hboot. If you want everything you need out of an OTA update, flash a rooted stock rom of it, and flash the radios, etc. if applicable. I seem to remember this same sort of thing happening to people with the last OTA.

One more thing. Thanks for your patience with me, the newbe. Where do I check my hboot version?

Turn the phone off, then press and hold the volume down button while turning the phone back on. That will take you to hboot, where you will find the version at the top.

You have to power down you phone and power on holding the volume down button and then you will see the bootloader screen and at the very top you will see the hboot version and rather the S-off or s-on

Given that I still have superuser permission does that allow me to still flash Roms? And do you think I did loose partial root?
