Which one did you do by accident?
That's why I've never done it, just in case the default ROM happens to be loaded with the orange bloatware.

I grabbed 2.2.1 as soon as I heard it was available bud (think that's right FW number lol) then had missing texts etc.
Handy to know I can go back to the original that the phone came with if need be

I done that and I still had Gingerbread.Choose the Factory Reset option I presume. It better be that as I've just done it

Same, I ended up folding and grabbing that leaked RUU, now HTC Sync doesn't bloody work. It's not let me go back to 2.2.

I've tried 2.2 RUU's but i get bootloader issues.
I've never actually done it, but I would expect it's the Factory Reset option. My mate was talked through the process by HTC when he got the flaky 2.2.1 update and the guy I spoke with at Orange yesterday told me that a backup ROM is installed on all handsets in case the installed ROM becomes corrupted. It's accessed by holding down when you turn the handset on. He actually suggest I give it a go as it might brand my handset....
Never, tried it and neither am I going to. If you want to give it a whirl, might be worth confirming what you're doing with HTC beforehand.

Factory reset, as you have found will not put your software back to an earlier version, You need to downgrade

Will that involve rooting at all? I'm not prepared to faff about with that, I'll just leave it as it is if so.

No, But if your phone is branded then you will need to create a goldcard

You probably are unbranded then but just to be sure, if you go to Menu > Setting > About phone > Software information, What does software number say ?

yep definitely are, follow the guide in this link [GUIDE] How to downgrade 1.7x/1.8x/2.x to 1.32.405.6 - xda-developers do section 1, minus the goldcard bit then continue from section 2b2.36.405.8
Pretty sure I'm unbranded after reading around on here
The attatched file bit in section 1 is at the bottom of the first post in the link, its called Downgrade v2.zip

It depends what you want outta your phone when it comes to rooting. I personally am rooted so I can remove bloatware, remove most ads and little things like that (overclocking when I bother to look for a kernel that allows it and works well with a stock ROM)

I want to be able to try diffrent roms and so on I've quite a technical knowlege with software, so I have rough idea's of what I am doing, I used to have a iPhone and this was jailbroken so I think rooting is the way forward

I used visionary r14 when i was on 1.32 and it was all shibby with me (yea i said shibby) then get S-OFF using the easy radio tool on xda and you're away
