OTA update

November. I rooted my Droid X. I decided to wait on rooting the Bionic until after the update.

not everyone is comfortable rooting and flashing leaked versions. some prefer to install the official release so if there is an issue they can blame verizon/motorola. root isn't for everyone. also leaked versions are not always the final release.
After many years of software development ... I am trained ... I don't expect software to work the first time. Rooting adds another layer of complexity to an already complex situation.
My test machine is rooted. My production machine is waiting.

So funny, many of you non-rooters have no clue. You can always un-root your phone, and no one would be able to tell that it was previously rooted. Assuming you know what you are doing, there is no down-side to rooting.

Whats funny is you seem so bothered by the fact they don't wish to root.
As someone who has rooted every Android device I've ever had i say if your uncomfortable doing it, or just plain don't want to by all means don't.
That's one of the beautiful aspects of Android ownership.. You have the choice.
And most do have a at least a clue and make the conscience decision not to, of their own volition. For whatever the reason may be.
I guess I was mumbling ... there are a LOT of problems with the Bionic right now ... I think some of them are 4G LTE network problems that will affect any 4G LTE phone ... some of them are software bugs ... some of them are bad phones that need to be exchanged ... some of them are bad patteriesd that need to be replaced ... some of them are user errors.
Speaking from a LOT of experience ... the last thing I want to do is to inject another set of variables into this malstrom (sp?). When it finally settles down I will root the Bionic.
I have had none of the reported glitches except for the period whe all 4G/3G was down. This makes me think I got a great phone with a great standard battery and there are network problems being worked on.

Obviously, what I thought was funny was that they think rooting their phone will make it harder to sell it & make the OTA update impossible when they can just unroot and revert back to stock. I find it funny that you somehow decided that I was bothered by people who don't root, when there is no indication of that in my previous post. Thanks for the laugh, Harrison Ford.

Next time clarify.. Because you did come off as a little Butt Hurt that they didn't want to root for whatever the reason.
Nowhere in your comment do you say that anything about that or explain yourself, so obviously i would deduce by your comment "Assuming you know what you are doing, there is no down-side to rooting." that you were being patronizing, and not helpful in any way.
There were far more constructive ways to say what you SAY you meant.

It does seem that you are just a bit condescending to us "non-rooters".

Seems to me the only one getting "butt-hurt" was you. I didn't think my post needed any clarifying, but here goes: There is no hidden message or meaning to my post. It is what it is. If you don't know what you are doing, there may be dire consequences to rooting your phone (such as bricking). If you know what you're doing, there is no down-side to rooting because you can always revert back to stock.

I really don't give a damn what people do w/their phones. But, when they tell others not to root until after the OTA update, and that rooting will somehow decrease the resell value of the phone, I'm gonna say something.

well i got bored and decided not to wait and rooted my phone and install a rom based off the 893 update and so far im loving it. Honestly i love rooting my phone and installing new different roms. if you never tried it you should try it especially with the new OTA update supposedly it wont let you root anymore, well that is untill the Devs find out another way how to but im sure most of the devs are going to go to the razr or the new nexus.
There is already a way to push the OTA and still get root afterwards

rooted phones used to sell for more money. atleast my friends OG droid did. That might be because it was harder to do it back then. Rooting is so easy for most phones now I wouldn't be surprised if the price was pretty much even for rooted/non rooted now.

If I come onto the forum and see that someone is asking for help, or maybe they are not even asking for help, but I can tell that they don't understand something that I may be more knowledgeble about, I will do what I can to educate that person without pretense and ego involved. It is the right thing to do. It is hurtful and rude to say things that make people feel stupid or unwelcome, and for the most part people here are wonderful about sharing knowledge without pretense. I hope we can continue to keep open communication, and acceptance of all people here, while sharing our knowledge in a humble way when prompted, and learning from others whenever we can. I learn new things here everyday!

I have one production phone now and have been trying to help others shake out the issues whey are having with it. Let me put it this way ... I have one phone number (business, home, mobile) and it is on my Bionic. (I also have a dedicated DSL line.)
Rooting opens the door for another whole group of developer errors to surface in new ways on what you have to admit is currently rather error prone.
My strategy is to help stabilize the Motorola delivered environment first before opening the door to errors from others.

To your original question you can go either way, but go no further than rooting and permarooting or the OTA won't take later. No bloat freezing. No ROMS. No tweaking. There is a small chance that you will not be able to root the OTA. There is a small chance that the OTA will remove root (even permaroot). .893 may not be the final OTA. Manually flashing .893 may block the OTA.

Not very cool at all! If someone is not very schooled in rooting...but still has questions or concerns, the most decent thing you can do is be helpful if your knowledgeable on the subject, not knock them...

Yea, it looks pretty legit. But, I'm just going to run custom ROMs w/the updates built in. So, no official OTA update for me. At least, until the dust settles.

If I were to post something about deep sea fishing that was obviously wrong and made no sense, and someone said I was clueless, is that offensive? I guess to some people, yes it is. But, to me, I would say "you're right, I don't know anything about it."
And if you read my 1st post, I obviously was being helpful. You just had to read past the 1st sentence.
It's kinda funny how this got blown way out of proportion. Who is the bad guy here? The one giving the wrong advice, or the one saying the person giving the wrong advice is clueless?

Maybe u didn't read past Johns first sentence, just give it a rest! Its a moot issue, you comments were a little misleading, and sounded pretty negative! Its time to move on now : )
