OTA update

Maybe u didn't read past Johns first sentence, just give it a rest! Its a moot issue, you comments were a little misleading, and sounded pretty negative! Its time to move on now : )

I must have posted in the wrong thread. I thought this was the "should I root before our after the OTA update. Not the "Let's get Charlie310 cuz he said somebody was clueless" thread. LOL.

To sum it up, don'run the OTA update if you want to root because you may not be about to root afterwards. You can use the "forever root" method or just flash a ROM with the updates built in.

Rom updates don't include the radio or kernel so you won't be able to take advantage of the radio fix that's proposed by Motorola. ;)

I would think these leaks from Moto do but not the ROMs people are putting together based on the leaks (due to the bootloader lock). I haven't looked to see if the bootloader gets updated which would mean "no backward flash" too but I'd really be surprised if the leaks don't have radio updates. They usually do. That's the point of them, mostly.

If it is the case that there are no radio updates, I'd recommend people to wait on the OTA. The biggest issues with the Bionic stem from the radio. Downloading a leak may stick you with an old radio and then a pain (for the newbies) to flash from there because there might not be an OTA path from the leak to OTA. Highly unlikely though that radio fixes aren't being tested too.

It was common on the X to get stuck in test releases. You flash a leak and Moto did not test whether the OTA would fly on top of the leak so they disabled that firmware for OTA. The only way to fix was to flash back manually to the last OTA and then let it OTA.

Thanks, but no one was "name-calling", unless "non-rooters" is now considered a deragotary term. Like I said before, I really don't give a damn what people do w/their phones. But, when they tell others not to root until after the OTA update, and that rooting will somehow decrease the resell value of the phone, I'm gonna say they are clueless, which is a fact.

Now that we have that, can you read my quotation that you put in your post again? I said name calling and instigating. Both. And I never once pointed a finger solely at you - I said it stops - for everyone. No more butt-hurt comments, calling people Harrison Ford, laughing at them, calling them silly, etc....

If you want to help, do so - no condescension allowed. People do get misinformation and they do need to be corrected - but you and everyone else here need to take a chill pill. Period. Say what you got to say without being condescending and demeaning. Which, by the way, was in the rest of my quotation.

I went back through your posts - and if you're feeling hurt b/c of the backlash, maybe you should learn to come off the condescension that you yourself said you did show in here. Not everyone in these forums has been using an Android-based phone for over a month, or over a year, or on their 5th Android phone since the original Android phone came out, what, 4 years ago?

I'll be the first to admit - the information in your posts was spot on - and I agree with it 100% - unless you don't pay attention, rooting is not going to devalue your phone, and neither is it a major security risk to the user. At the same time, as I noted before, it is still their choice - you cannot say someone is a fool for rooting, nor can you say someone is a fool for not rooting, even if their logic (or lack thereof) is flawed.

Now, getting back to the original question...

maybe you herp derps should stop herp derping your herp derps and answer OP's question

Already answered.

does anyone know when they are going to release the 893 OTA update?
because idk if i should root my phone or not.

Question

'Early November'. I'd wait.

Answer 1

November. I rooted my Droid X. I decided to wait on rooting the Bionic until after the update.

Answer 2

As soon as any one has more information it will be posted, guaranteed.

BTW, you don't need root to apply the leaked updates, and if you're having connectivity issues, I highly recommend that you consider applying the leaked 5.X.893 updates, where X ε {5,6,7}

I should have links for the full 5.7.893 update soon and I'll post, along with instructions, for those that wish to remain unrooted.

I found this over on the Moto Owners Forum. Definitely not good news if in fact true:

This is a quote from a post by the Forum Manager (post #9):
I know everyone is eager for updated software. We have been working diligently on a software update for DROID BIONIC and have a version in the testing stage; we expect to deliver it to users in 30 to 60 days. The update is targeting issues identified through owner feedback and we

I think I am going to wait it out, at least until i hear the leaked version is stable enough and all network problems have vanished. I will be contacting Verizon again about losing 4G, i am not too happy about this at all. I have been a Verizon customer for close to 15 years, and this is just poor Customer Service on there part.

I beg to differ: your complaint is TECHNICAL in nature--NOT one of poor "Customer Service". Poor CS is when they are: hard to reach, rude, or waste your time with ineptitude. This problem re the data loss is a TECHNICAL snafu. Hang tight.

Come on everyone ... he is under a microscope ... he has to project the absolute worst case for the delivery.

If he was optimistic the way many want him to be and there is a new problem that crops up and they miss the announced date ... he is simply cooked.

I will believe ANY of it when it happens ... that is the REAL game.

Sorry to tell you, when you release a device that has major network problems as the Bionic, that is Poor Customer Service. Start the Argument where it starts, this device has a flaw, and i am sure they new about it when it was released. Remember we are customers to Verizon, and we pay big money to subscribe to there services. I expect much more for a $600 device.

I will hang on, and enjoy the open source platform that Android supplies us, I fully understand that the android platform is growing, and we are growing with it. But also expect the antenna to work on it.

and there are some unbelievably childish ranters threatening all sorts of retaliation. LOL!

Perhaps so. I really have to believe that most, like me, are just frustrated with the problems they are experiencing with the phone, and simply want them fixed, and the phone to work as advertised. I didn't see any fine print in the ads for the phone in the verizon "rule the air" campaign that stated, "only if a data signal can be maintained, or only if it doesn't freeze up, or it doesn't have a BSOD."

In other words, customers simply want to get what they were promised, and more importantly, what they paid for.

Add to the frustration that most here have accessorized the phone to some extent so their investment is more than just the cost of the phone itself. I got the costco bundle and purchased two extended batteries, so I'm into this device for just over $350. I wouldn't have any qualms about that if it worked as intended.

Since the phone took forever to be released, one could logically conclude the delay meant at least in part that the requisite testing was done to ensure the phone could at least hold a data signal. Then when it finally gets into the hands of the customers, we're having these widespread data and BSOD problems.

Next moto comes out and announces (perhaps not officially, I'm unsure of the details) that an OTA update will fix this stuff (at least the data issue, as I've seen no acknowledgement of the BSOD problem by moto) in "early November." Customers wait patiently and on the first day of November moto states the update will instead come in "30-60 days." Customers are already frustrated with an expensive phone that took forever to get here that doesn't work, and now the OTA is postponed. The impending release of the moto Razr doesn't help Bionic customers frustration levels one bit.

Count me as one of the frustrated, and one who is tired of moto's deceptive practices and delays. I've been with moto since bag phone days (circa 1992). This phone should have never been released until these issues were resolved. Too bad they felt they needed to rush to get it released before the next gen i-phone.

The sad part is that when it works, I really like this phone. It runs circles around my previous device (a rooted OG droid). The data loss and BSOD issues have become show stoppers for me, as they significantly effect the reliability of this device. I need a phone that works, not some temperamental toy that I constantly need to pull out of sleep mode to make sure it's still on, unfrozen, etc. Unfortunately this latest delay, if true, may just be the last straw for me.
