Root OTA updates

Does rooting the Nexus S and flashing clockwork prevent ota updates? If not after an OTA will I need to re root? Just curious how things work on the Nexus line. I haven't decided yet if I am going to use a ROM like CM or not yet.

Umm... not necessarily always but its not really a good idea to place a OTA on top of a CR, you should just revert back to factory when there is notice of an OTA though but you should never put the OTA on top of a custom rom (CR) things could mess up. So just for safety side of it all always revert back to factory if you plan to wait on a OTA but of course there will be Custom Roms of these OTA's so that your wait time is no more than anyone elses.

I was given the impression that with a custom ROM, your phone won't get an OTA update. Everyone I talked to that had a CR would flash their phones with a recovery (stock) ROM to get the OTA.

Well it depends on the device because there are things like Device Management where carriers push out the updates through. I don't think its the same though since its google pushing these ones out now, it could be another way but there are some instances where you can still receive OTA's and still have root and your CR but they would probably have to have whatever they are using to push em out untampered with and most developers mess with these kind of things so really it can go either way. Flashing back to stock is what I highly recommend doing though because if it is possible to flash the OTA over the CR I can only imagine so many issues resulting from it. Thats just my word of advice though, always better safe than sorry.

Yes, better safe than sorry. :) What I've noticed other than the Nexus phones, with the other phones, it's much faster to have a cutom ROM with the latest OS than wait for the OTA. A lot of phones are still waiting for Froyo ;) lol

Lol oh yeah most definitely true. I hope some CRs are produced for this soon though. I just love to flash those CRs there should be some amazing stuff going with this soon its stock android with the hummingbird I imagine we could possibly take it past that 1.6ghz overclocking and get some added features .

I agree that normally you would not want to wait for a newer version of Android, however these OTA updates for Nexus S are "pure" Google updates and are directly from Google; we are the first to receive them. As for receiving future OTAs if you root and port a different ROM, no you will not receive OTAs because Google is looking for that specific Kernel, build number, etc to update.

I rooted my nexus s, and I received an OTA message today. I clicked yes to update. It booted into the android logo with the yellow triangle, and I didn't know what to do next. I read from somewhere that I need to press vol up and power again to get to the update menu. Anyway, somehow I got it to the clockwork recovery screen and I chose to reboot.

I then tried to download the ota update file manually and try to flash it with the clockwork recovery, then it says the status 7 error. Any ideas on how to flash the update without unrooting it?
